I "bought" a car from JD Byrider the last week of October, 2002. I had just moved to Columbus, IN from Muncie, In and the car we had, overheated and apparently cracked the head. At any rate, I had to have a car. I have serious health problems and we have a 10 year old daughter that we have to get enrolled in schoo. We drove the car back to Muncie for the weekend to visit my sister, and the car quit on us, just as we got into Anderson.

We got the car started and got to my sister's house where I called Byrider in Columbus (where I had purchased the car). They told me that they also owned the Muncie store and someone would come pick it up and fix it free of charge since I hadn't made a payment yet (remember I had only had the car a week or less). They told me the battery terminals were coroded and needed to be cleaned and I could pick the car up. Okay, I picked up the car, drove it home and it quit again. Again, I called Byrider and they said they would come and get the car and fix it.

It turned out that the motor had to be replaced. They called me when the car was done to come and get it (this was the day before Thanksgiving) and we were going to my neice's house in Muncie for Thanksgiving. The guy at the lot put my license plates on the car for me and we left for Muncie. Now,mind you all these times I had the car worked on, they told me don't worry about making a payment until we know the car is going to be ok.

The week after Thanksgiving, I talked to the manager Terry Gearheart and told him I would be in on Tuesday to make a payment. We got 6 inches of snow that night and school was cancelled and we were living out in the county and couldn't get out until they plowed the roads. I called Terry and told him I would put a money order in the mail since I couldn't get into town. He told me he didn't want my "f-ing" money, he wanted the car back and he was going to report it as stolen because I picked it up from the lot after the motor work was done and I didn't have a "release form" to get the car.

I called the state, county and city police stations and asked them if the car had been reported as stolen and they told me not to worry about it because Byrider does this kind of thing all the time. At any rate, they picked the car up on a flatbed truck at 5:00 a.m. Thursday, December 12. Then Terry had the nerve to call us around noon that day and ask how our "f-ing" feet felt. I asked him to repeat what he just said and he did and I asked who he was and he told me and said I've got my car back.

I shook my husband to tell him about the phone call and he had died of a sudden massive heart attack. After the funeral arrangements and everything was taken care of for my husband, I went to Byrider to talk to Terry and more or less tell him what I thought of him. He conveinently wasn't there so the "credit manager" agreed to talk to us. I told him what had happened to my husband and I felt like they had a big hand in bringing on the stress that caused the heart attack and his viscious reply was "
Are you trying to tell me that Terry caused his death?" and then he asked us to leave. We left but as I was going out the door I told him he had not heard the last of me.

Is there anything we can do to stop these people from taking advantage of other people and running them down? This is absolutely no way to do business.

Both of these dudes are liars.  They work for a predator company, but they claim to be offering a service.  Yeah they'll always be desperate / stupid people and thats exactly what they count on.

They troll this site frequently -- I think its in the employee manual to do so.

name clearing

AUTHOR: Terry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 02, 2008

My name is Terry Gerhart. I want to clear up my name here. The customer in question does not know me. The Finance manager in Columbus Indiana at the time was Terry Burgin, who no longer works for our company. The customer only knew a "Terry" worked in Columbus. I am a VP of the company who happended to be in that location one day, many months prior to this alleged incident, when this customer called one day, I took that call. I introduced myself (over the phone) and listened to her comment. I remember at the time it had to do with something about paying late. I told I would talk to her account manager and we hung up.
Several months later this incident occured when Terry Burgin repossessed her car for non-payment thus being in default of the contract. At the time, Terry Burgin reported to me and he had me listen to the tape made by her husband that was left on the store's answering machine. It was her husband who was cursing and said he left sugar in the tank. He apparently died that night of an heart attack. I just wanted to clear up my name as I had nothing to do with the repossession (that is something I allow the FM to decide) and I certainly did not call this lady or have any contact with her or her husband before the repossession (other than the one time mentioned above) or after the repossession. The bottom line was this customer refused to pay for her car and was repossessed and wants to blame someone other then herself for her financial woes. Thank you

Terry Gerhart

#5 UPDATE EX-employee responds

This story is mostly fictional

AUTHOR: Terry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, May 04, 2006

She is right, she did take the car without paying ANYTHING, she took the car from the service dept. knowing that she owed money and then skipped town. After her now deceased husband called in the store and left a nasty message about good luck finding the car and how sweet the sugar is in the gas tank, we traced the call with caller ID to a nasty little motel that they were living in and we went and picked the vehicle up. The only thing sore about her was her feet from chasing us down the street as we drove away with the car she never paid for...
