On 3-13 I was contacted by Norma Jean Wilson of JNM Total Facility Maintenance to look at a job at a Michaels store. I have worked in this business for many years, And now check out companies before jumping in to working for, and granting credit, to new ones. On our first conversation, I asked her, in addition to the work order, to provide her company information like address, and any insurance requirements and contract/terms/etc paperwork. She sent just the work order. I emailed back, and asked again for the company address (they use just a PO box) and any contract/terms they use. She ignored the address question again, but sent a very lengthy vendor packet. I read it. It was 14 pages of code of ethics, hold harmless, subcontractor agreements, addendums, etc. Wow. It seemed obvious to me, that all this paperwork was probably taken from her previous employer, Salvador Construction. Salvador Construction is abbreviated as SCIFM, and although "JNM Total Facility Maintenance Inc" was filled in on all the paperwork, they clearly didn't proof read it, as "SCIFM" is still in there several times.
I emailed Norma Jean back, again asked for the company address, and asked if JNM was affiliated with SCIFM. She replied back that they were not affiliated. She also said that she (the supposed PRESIDENT of the company) didn't KNOW their address, but that I could look something up on a Florida state website and find whatever address they originally listed with them.
Well, anyone who's been in this business as long as me, knows that these maintenance companies pop up all the time, and come and go like the wind. I'm a little more careful about granting credit, after getting burned several times. JNM lists a website, but there is none there. Their "code of ethics" was clearly lifted from her previous employer. And they refuse, after 4 requests, to provide a street address. Add that all up, and there's no way I would just trust them.
I emailed my concerns to Norma Jean, and told her that since she wouldn't provide a street address, that the only way I could work for them would be on a prepaid basis. Her response was: "I don't work with vendors with whom I have to defend my company to."
Defend her company? Was asking for their address really such an attack?
Anyway, that was the end of it. I did no work for them, so wasn't really ripped off per se. Maybe they do pay their vendors. I don't know. But they seem pretty sketchy to me, and considering how many of these companies rip off their vendors, I decided not to take the risk with them.
