Well, the first 2 weeks of work were pretty nice, I was suprised at the lack of training that the company had because there WAS no training, not even on safety! My first day, I was out on the road with another driver!
After about a week and a half after I was hired, I was already given my own route & truck which was suprising. I had NO safety training, and no training on the truck. NOTHING. Now considering I never did this type of work before, I was a little shocked and nervous about starting my own route, they basically threw me on a route down in the hamptons, gave me a map, & 2 helers & said Have at it. If anyone knows of the hamptons, its not a very nice place to be put.
I managed to get by my first week, they really didnt care how many hours i was working considering I was paid a daily salary. Working 14-15 hours a day, which is illegal with PENNDOT but mascaros didn't care. Mark, the operations manager would be hostile towards me, cussing & threatening me & my helpers if I didn't get my route completed.
My second week on route, I ended up going through a DOT checkpoint, I ended up getting 2 citations for the brakes being improperly adjusted. The officer actually took a ruler & measured the brakes. LOL!
Mascaros told me to plead not guilty and their lawyers would handle it. I guess money talks.
Another 2 weeks go by, Im working on these routes in the hamptons, working 14-15 hours per day, starting at 5 AM and not getting done until 8 at night. Constantly being called by dispatch & route spies telling me I "missed" cans from previous days, forcing me to turn around & go 10-15 miles out of my way to pick up trash on the other side of town. This was an EVERY DAY occurence. I dont think 1 day went by in my employment that I didnt have to go back & pick something else up. Plus the EXTREMELY long routes. Routes that should be done by 2-3 different trucks, they just didnt have any trucks or other help so I was stuck doing 3 routes.
I would watch others drive these trucks, some trucks had doors with rusted off hinges, the door is haning on by 1 hinge, trucks with doors BUNGEE TIED together. The trucks Mascaros used are WAY out of date, old & a road hazard. My truck aloone, besides the brakes being out of adjustment, I went over 3 WEEKS, telling the incapable, lazy mechanics that I had no tail lights, nothing done. I told Mark the manager about it, his response? "oh its not illegal, you can drive with no tail lights" this went on for 3 weeks! I had an extremely bad steering wheel pull to the right to the point of losing control when I would hit a bump, I had NO windshield wipers, several rainy days would involve me constantly wiping away the water from the windshield, I had NO speedometer, I pretty much guessed my speed. It was NON stop! I would fill out all the things wrong with it, EVERY DAY on the VCR, nothign was ever done, the mechanics would sigh off on it, & that was that. Its funny how the sheets would always dissapear the next day. Always something! Also, I had 2 helpers with me in the cab, a 2 seater truck with 3 people in it. One would litterally sit on the dashboard!
one day, I just had it. I drove all the way back to base, threw down my keys, & walked out. a week later, I recieved a letter in the mail about my court date for the 2 citations, Tony the main manager basically told me I was "SOL" so Im stuck dealing with it on my own.
I guarentee some other poor sap is sitting in that truck right now with the same problems. I bet you if I was to go to the yard right now & look for truck "101" the truck I used, it would still have ALLLLLL the same problems it had!
I mean this company is the most unsafe, unethical, cheap, unreliable company I have EVER worked for! Dont be suckered into working or using their services!

I totally believe this complaint 100%. They use the cheapest parts, cheapest oil, cheapest grease, cheapest labor. Shop managers had no say is what parts they bought, we had to get 3 estimates on the needed parts, then a purchasing agent would find a cheaper part and tell you what to buy. The tires were the worst. They would not tow a truck unless the police made them. They'd send an unqualified mechanic to cob a truck on the side of the road.
Very few employees cared at all. Mechanics would come in late or not show up at all. I couldn't do anything about it, because of they quit, I was the one at fault and had to work long hours.
Any good mechanic has 3 top priorities. 1. Safe. 2. Reliable. 3. Cost effective. In that order. Mascaro's would ignore 1 and 2 and focus on 3. Safe means DOT legal, very few of Mascaro's trucks are safe. Reliable means minimal breakdowns, I dealt with 3-4 breakdowns per day on average, so they were not reliable.

The crying never stops I swear. If you were hired then sent with another driver, you were being trained. TAKE NOTES. He no doubt showed you how to run the compactor and dump the truck and fill out the proper slips for the landfill or disposal sight.
RE: This is where you are COMPLETELY wrong. No one showed me how to do anything. I was hired, sent out with a old guy to pick up old appliances because he was hurt and couldnt lift them himself. Then I was put in a truck and handed a map. That's all the training I got.
I was employed by JP Mascaro from 1996 to 1998 and I had fun working for them.
RE: You had fun? If it was so much "fun" then why did you only work for them for 2 years?
Yea I had some problems with my truck but I didn't cry about it. I wrote it up on the VCR and they fixed it. I had to wait a few days sometimes because there were other trucks to be fixed that had worse problems. So I did what I had to do until the mechanics got to it.
RE: This has no bearing on the fact that their trucks are total crap. They are unsafe. So you are telling me a truck that the passenger door had to be bungied shut is acceptable to drive?
You were a little shocked and nervous about starting your own route? Oh my god ALL truck drivers have to start thier own routes sometime no matter who they work for. You went to the Hamptons with a map that they gave you. Well READ THE MAP. Your route was on it. And I dont know why it took you 14 to 15 hours to do it. The Hamptons aren't that big.
RE: The Haptons ARE that big. Pull out a map and look. Also, when you have to break route every day because a supervisor is out following you and saying you missed one can from the previous day?
And if you had to do 3 routes in one day then you would have ran out of fuel so I don't believe that one
RE: Well believe it. I had a gas card and I've had to go and get more fuel.
I had taken over the Collegeville route after a driver quit in 1997. He used to get done the route at 10 pm and started at 7am. I started the route at 7 am like him and was done at 3:30 pm. and that included a run to Pioneer. So its not the route that was so bad IT WAS THE DRIVER.
RE: Once again you are wrong. Your friend must have been lucky and gotten a small route. Who's butt did you kiss? Did he know the owner? are YOU the owner?
Im sure the same thing applies with your case. Im sure the Supervisors were mad at you. The DOT found problems with your truck because you probably didn't pre-trip your truck correctly. If the brakes were out of adjustment when you did a pre-trip then the truck shouldn't have left the yard until they were adjusted. Again driver error.
RE: Oh really? Well when you have a lazy mechanic sipping coffee all morning and not doing anything, its hard to wait to get it fixxed. When your supervisors tell you there are no other trucks and that it actually is LEGAL to drive without tail lights, what am I supposed to do? That is why I QUIT.
If a supervisor told you to take out a truck with no tail lights then its the fault of the company so dont worry about it. I have no idea how you could even drive a truck and see out of the windshield with somebody sitting on the dashboard. that one is amusing Jeffrey. I think you did the right thing by quitting. You aren't cut out for driving a trash truck.
RE: Well Sir. This is where you are totally wrong. There was someone sitting in the center, above the console. Let me tell you that I still work in the trash business for another waste managemet company and I love it. I am paid well, treated like a human being, safety is number ONE, and I have worked for them since 2005. So sir, maybe YOU liked working for them, but I DO NOT. Thanks for your input. Its hard to imagine you do not work for the company still. Or maybe a owner??

At the end of the article, they talk about a previous accident, a truck hit & killed a 5 year-old boy.
How does the owner & their sons live every day knowing how awful & unsafe their trucks are? They obviously have no feelings. All they care about is getting their next year's Hummer. I know someone who knows one of the mascaro's sons & from what she was telling me, he's a swinging party animal who spends all the company's money on vehicles & women.

Also, I just wanted to add that about 2 weeks a go, one of these trucks got into a bad accident about half a mile from where I lived. My Aunt saw the accident scene too coming home from work & told me about it. She said she saw the helper on the ground having seizures. Another employee from the company I work for now, also told me about the accident. I can't find any articles about this accident, bit I DID find an article about how irrisponsible this company is, and the fast that everything I am saying is all 100% true about this company.

If you read it, a mechanic for JP mascaros said "The 1973 truck was described by a Mascaro mechanic as "the worst truck he had ever seen," according to court papers, with bad brakes and other grave problems -- problems Mascaro knew about but didn't fix."
This company would allow their drivers to do 45-50+ MPH with 2 helpers on the back. One slip up & someones dead! Do yo ureally want these trucks rolling around your neighborhood or do you want to work for a company with these bad of vehicles? DONT USE THEIR SERVICES OR WORK FOR THEM OR YOU ARE ASKING FOR A LOT OF TROUBLE & HEARTACHE!

I explained the situation to the officer, he said that he knows how Mascaros works & that if this happened, I should have still filled out everyhting on the inspection report thats wrong with it & who i spoke to so if I got pulled over, the company would have been fined & would have made the owner appear in court.
Its funny because that day, the mascaros truck goes past the courthouse, that was one of the routes I did. As I was leaving, I saw the SAME truck I used to drive. The truck STILL had no rear tail lights! I saw the headlights were on, & the driver had the emergency lights on to make it look like they worked, but the rear tail lights were NOT on. I made sure I told the officer about it. I hope they did something about it, but I doubt it.
Im just disgusted at the way they treat their employees. One main reason that stay in business is beause most of the pickers & helpers that pick up the trash come from the county prison, so they basically get free labor. Not to mention the drivers get a measley small daily pay & end up working at LEAST 10-11 hours per day minimum.
A friend of my Aunts knows the owners son, Ben Mascaro from what she told me, he dates lots of women, & has like a 2 hummers & 3 or 4 Harleys, but the company can't purchase newwer trucks. It's sad.
All I know is I learned my lesson the hard way, & that won't happen again!

This company has been in trouble with this before and has been sued for faulty maintance practices in the past, plus the majority of the equiptment is old and in disrepair due to they dont want to spend the money on it,or the parts to fix them. Do a search through fmvsma on there safety rating and citations given for the past 30 months, it doesnt look pretty. They cannot fire someone who refuses to operate a unsafe vehicle. You are responsible for the safe opetration of the vehicle, and seeing you got the 2 citations, you are stuck with them, also if you have a cabover mack it only is a 2 seat cab, so you were also in violation there also.
