I always did my best, looked professional, and acted professionally. I would work when others could not come in, and worked in between 2 different stores to help out. I made 7 bucks an hour. It's not good. But I wasn't complaining since I thought I would be able to get a bonus in June. I never was paid extra for driving across town to the other store. Which happened for about 2 months 5 days a week.I also would open the store fronts and print checks when needed. And make calls, trying to strum up business.
My complaint is that they tell you about the bonus. Of course they are discretionay. But as long as you do what your supposed to and have so many returns. You would get a percentage based bonus in June. Which last year was about 500.00 for tax preparers. And 1000.00 for managers. So I was told.
Here it is!! June 15th. My other coworkers that I have spoken to have thier bonus. But I did not get one. From what I have heard-a lot of employees are very upset. And I encourage them to get on here and post your report.
I personally worked with 2 very smart men. They knew taxes and people would come from miles around just to see them. But I also noticed some of the employees were not cut out to be a tax preparer. They had no knowledge of taxes, and messed up several returns. That had to be fixed by one of the above mentioned guys. I would imagine they couldn't even balance a check book much less do a return. Personally, I have some experience in taxes. Doing my own and other family members. And of course taking the classes and learning from the pros. If I didn't know what to do I'd ask-period. That's how you learn.
I would like everyone to know. They seem to overcharge for the service greatly and as of today seem very greedy (which is terrible being that the lady who is part owner is so religious, always ending her emails with God Bless You). I would be very careful doing business with this organization. Honestly be careful of any of them. It's by far cheaper to do them online. I did my own for the past 3 years for 12.95. That's it! And a whole lot of people can do their taxes online for free. If you meet income requirements. And you can get a rapid return online too. It costs more but still less than JH. I just do the direct deposit on my own and most of the time the IRS is very quick on getting my money. Supposed to take 2 weeks, but is more like 7 or 8 days.
I am thinking about starting a little business doing them myself-and charge 30 bucks for the easy returns. Which is way less than the bottom price they charge-135.00. I know there will always be people out there that do not want to mess with their own taxes. But I really do not understand why they want to charge so much especially when a lot of the customers are median to low income families who need every penny.
They are a rip off. And hire people who are not qualified. And they don't pay the honest hard workers what they deserve. And keep it all for themselves.

I gave her several ways to contact me. She emailed me and said I had very few negative remarks on my file and was a good employee. I replied and asked her what the neg. remarks were. But as I thought there wasn't any. She had nothing to say about that. And my coworker sent her an email, stating that I was an exceptional employee and should be reconsidered for a bonus. She sent an email and said me and 2 others would be considered. Total hogwash!
I finally decided to email her and see if I was or not-and she just put Upon consideration we decided not give any more bonuses. But raise the pay rate for next year. Like that will be of any help to me.
Boy was I mad. But sent her a nice thank you note, and that's it. Such a shame-the guy who is going to be managing over here needs help-and he really wanted me to help out. I told him I really did not think so. I wish I was close enough to work at a different one. But HR Block is the other one here. I would just be weary of the the stores owned by Hooten. Non professional, greedy.

To work for Jackson Hewitt, you have to be able to pass certain tests. The IRS requires this of all of their tax preparers that submit forms electronically.
I can't speak personally for the owners of this franchise, but I do know the owners of the franchises that I have worked for would never dream of doing something like this.
I'm not sure how far you are away from Denton/Decatur, but you may look into one of those offices. The owners are wonderful, if you have tax experience and are intelligent they reward that, and they're just all-around great people. We've got a lot of very experienced people in our offices, and some not-so-experienced people who will still ask questions before they mess things up.
