We purchased a 2007 Jacobsen modular home for installation on 1 1/2 acres we own near Keystone Heights, FL. It was to be our retirement home and we purchased a Jacobsen because we had been led to believe they build a good quality home.

We have been in the home a little over a year now and are very disappointed with the quality of it. We have had to replace all kitchen and bathroom cabinets because the ones that came with the house were of such poor quality that the raised panel doors were coming apart. The cabinets were installed with most of the doors not plumb; drawers were put in with bent and twisted glides and broken rollers. When the downdraft for our island stovetop was installed, the pipe was simply pushed through a hole in the floor into the insulation - not even vented to the crawl-space.

We are currently replacing the counter tops because of very visible seams in the formica and very poor installation of tile edging and backsplashes. We orderd the home with ceramic tile installed in much of the home and it is uneven in many places. There is a definite hump in the floor where the 2 halves were put together and many of the walls are not square. Paint quality was very poor so we have re-painted every room.

Bottom line, if you want a quality manufactured home DO NOT buy a Jacobsen.

Modular/ Manufactured Home

AUTHOR: Erik - (USA)

The rebuttal offered some information about Modular homes that are not correct. Modular homes are not governed by HUD ( Housing and Urban Development) it is governed by DCA ( Department of Community Affaires). HUD is the governing body for manufactured homes in the United States of America. There are in fact two types of DCA, Modular Homes, available. One is a "Off Frame" and the other is a "On Frame" Off frame is removed from the "frame" and craned over on to a stem wall foundation. On frame is set up with the frame left under the home and is set up more like a HUD manufactured home with a few changes to the footers to qualify as a permanent foundation. Off frame modular homes have a bigger floor joist than a on frame modular home too. I am wondering if the original complaint had to replace his own cabinets or did the factory in question replace them? Did the factory install the down draft stove or did the selling dealer? I know that some manufactures require that the down draft ventilation be completed by the dealer as it cannot properly travel to the location from the factory with the piping hanging under the home. I also wonder if they saw the type of paint offered by the factory when choosing the options for their home? Was it not the same? Did the dealer miss lead them on the type of paint offered by the factory that built their home?

Not a "modular".......

AUTHOR: Adolph - (USA)

Reading your report in full reveals your purchase was NOT a "modular" home, but a "manufactured" home. Manufactured homes were formerly called "house trailers". A modular is built to HUD standards and is more costly to purchase and set up than a manufactured home. The I beam rails (frame) remain under a manufactured home (house trailer). A Modular is delivered on a truck and set on the foundation or similar usually using a large crane, without
any steel I beams remaining.
.
Manufactured homes in general fall significantly short of the quality of a modular. They cost
much less. In fact, some makes are really crappy. It's sad you are receiving such reportedly
poor service on your Jacobsen manufactured home / house trailer. Much of the quality and fit issues are subject to the time and effort put forth by the dealer and the skill (of lack there of) of the set-up crew. It is absolutely essential that a manufactured home be properly and evenly supported during set-up, and supports be numerous and secure enough to remain so. Several issues to which you allude could easily be the result of improper and sloppy set-up by the unconcerned dealer. Jacobsen is in fact, one of the best (quality wise) manufacturers. I state this as a personal observation after viewing in detail all available brands of manufactured
homes available in central Florida. Please be assured you could've done much worse.
