NEW YORK (CBS) Two pill-popping, kleptomaniacs tagged as a modern day Jennifer Jones/Demello 'Thelma and Louise' evaded major sentencing in a Manhattan Supreme Court Tuesday, according to local news reports.

Jessica Joyner, 42, and Jennifer Jones Jennifer Jones/Demello, 33, didn't hit the road and head to Mexico, but according to police the duo allegedly posed as prospective buyers, touring multimillion-dollar Manhattan apartments, then would work as a team to swipe lavish goods, according to The New York Daily News.

Prosecutors agreed Tuesday to drop larceny charges against Joyner on grounds that she completes a year of counseling and attend an anti-shoplifting program, the paper reported.

Jones, her partner in crime, previously landed a similar deal and admitted to stealing jewelry, furs and other luxurious items during various open houses in Oct. and Nov. of 2007, according to the Daily News.

According to their pleas, the two Upper East Side Manhattanites' affinity for stealing goods stemmed from an apparent prescription drug habit, the paper reported.

The sticky-fingered duo also pleaded guilty to pulling the same scam at three residences in up-scale Saddle River, N.J. They were sentenced in N.J. to probation until 2011, according to the Daily News. If they manage to keep their hands on their own things, charges in New York will be dismissed in six months and sealed after two years, states the paper.

Joyner, a divorcee, "didn't need the money," according to her lawyer Marc Agnifilo. She reportedly owns a $645,000 home in the Hamptons, while Jones, formerly of Southampton, L.I., allegedly argues with her Upper East Side neighbors about her prediliction for leaving her cigarette butts everywhere, states the Daily News.

The arrest of accused open-house bandit Jennifer Jones has floored members of her Alcoholics Anonymous group because they considered her a poster child for clean living.

"She was an AA cheerleader," a source said of Jones, who claimed to be in her 12th year of sobriety and had run meetings of the recovery group's Atlantic branch on Park Ave. and 60th St.

Police believe Jones and buddy Jessica Joyner filched expensive jewelry and designer bags while posing as buyers at open houses to support a prescription-drug habit.

The allegation has stunned her AA compatriots.

"She has presented herself as somebody who has been graced with the gift of alcohol recovery and is now a useful member of society," the source said.

Jones, 33, is being held at Rikers Island until a court appearance tomorrow.

Joyner, 39, was released yesterday from the Bergen County Jail, where she was transferred to face charges for thefts in Upper Saddle River, N.J.

"She's going to go home and take a nap," said her lawyer, Marc Agnifilo.

Joyner was also an AA member, attending meetings on 79th St., a source said.

Jones was such an active AA member she ran to be chair of the meetings for two straight years - most recently two weeks ago, when she was defeated by a narrow margin, the source said.

"She always presented herself as very friendly, flirtatious 'Sex in the City' kind of girl," the source said of the LIU Southampton College grad.

"She always wanted to get set up with rich Jewish men," the source said.

Jones and Joyner face up to three years in prison if convicted of larceny. Cops say they hit ritzy apartments on the east and west sides of Manhattan.

Donning designer duds and wigs, one would distract the real-estate agent while the other rifled the apartments for expensive handbags, jewelry and clothes, prosecutors said.

A Connecticut man whose Manhattan pied-à-terre was looted by the modern-day Thelma and Louise said he actually could appreciate their creativity.

"It's a pretty smart little deal they had going on," said Gary Engle, 59, who lost Louis Vuitton and Hermès bags and Tiffany alarm clocks in the heist.

His wife, Dao Engle, 40, called the caper "pretty ingenious."

"It seems like it would be such an easy crime," she said. "They're constantly having open houses, and there aren't enough brokers to watch everyone."

The day the couple's weekend pad on E. 96th St. was robbed, Joyner and Jones allegedly swiped valuables from two other condos: bags and bracelets from an apartment at E. 78th St. and Champagne and diamond earrings from a home on E. 82nd St.

They are also charged with two thefts in Upper Saddle River, N.J., on Nov. 11, cops said.

"It is an addictive crime," Dao Engle said. "Once you get away the first time...."

They posed as wealthy apartment buyers, but turned out to be an upscale version of Thelma and Louise who pilfered diamonds and furs from luxury Manhattan pads.

Jessica Joyner, 39, and Jennifer Jones, 33, who both live in swanky upper East Side digs, were nabbed after being chased from an open house they were allegedly attempting to rip off, cops said Sunday.

The devious duo, who look more like preppies than perps, were charged with petty larceny, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, and were to be arraigned today.

Cops believe Joyner and Jones have been pulling their bogus-buyer scam since early October, dressing in designer duds to fit in as elite real estate browsers.

Joyner, a divorcee, even drives a 2003 Jaguar XJ8. She lives in an E. 94th St. apartment and owns a $645,000 home in the Hamptons.

Her former mother-in-law, Mary Cannon, expressed shock last night when she heard of the arrest.

"I haven't seen her for a long time," Cannon said of Joyner.

Jennifer Jones/Demello

Joyner had been a vice president for a global information, technology and marketing firm with offices in Washington and New Jersey.

On the company's Web site, she boasts of having 15 years' "experience negotiating, managing and promoting affinity relationships with Fortune 500 companies." She also claims to have once owned her own consulting company, ICMG.

Jones, previously of Southampton, L.I., recently moved into a rent-stabilized apartment on E. 75th St., where neighbors have complained of her littering the courtyard with cigarette butts.

Cops said that while touring the multimillion-dollar apartments, one woman would distract the real estate agent while the other swiped everything she could get her sticky manicured fingers on.

Cops said a broker recently caught them in the act and yelled, "What are you doing?" when he saw them clearing shelves during an open house.

Sources said Joyner and Jones bolted from the apartment, but the broker raced after them, getting the license plate number of their getaway car.

Using the plate number, cops tracked down one of the women, who gave up her partner, police said.

Joyner, a blond with a horsy smile, and Jones, a sexy brunette, allegedly stole with discriminating tastes, police said.

They are accused of taking handbags, a Tiffany clock, earrings, diamond rings, clothes, a wallet, a Coach backpack and even a fur coat.

The pair hit ritzy apartments on both the East and West sides of Manhattan, ripping off at least five high-end addresses.

Among the buildings they targeted were 14 E. 96th St., 4 E. 82nd St. and 2373 Broadway, where they allegedly stole a diamond eternity band.
