They have a record on me a mile long and know that I NEVER accept their "extra" services except for an air filter. I have another mechanic that works on my cars if needed, in fact they have sometimes told me to have them check certain things. This was the 1st time that I sent my son alone and they said they asked him if he wanted these things done... he says that not the case.
They ended up giving him the most expensive oil change, radiator coolant, rear diff. service, synthetic fluid charge, front diff service, another synthetic fluid charge and limited slip charge. My husband looked at the bill and said it was all BS that didn't need to be done. Do NOT send your naive children to this company by themselves. They will rip them off!!! I myself will not be returning to this company either. I have been very loyal to them and when I called them to inquire about it..... I got the "sorry but too bad" attitude and they could care less that they took advantage of a kid.

Do not send your naive son's or your ignorant selves out into the world!
AUTHOR: SUCKA! - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 27, 2012If your son is old enough to operate such a heavy and potentially dangerous piece of machinery, then he should be old enough to know which decisions he should and should not make. $328.06 out the door for a front and rear full-synthetic differential service with limited slip additive, coolant flush, and full-synthetic oil change is actually a pretty good deal. You sent your son out into the world with a vehicle and a credit card. He is young, ignorant, and naive. You, as a parent, failed to inform him to only pay for a cheap oil change and nothing else. That's your fault, not the repair facility's fault.
What you should have done: Since you were such a "loyal" cheap-oil-change-only consumer, you should have gone into the facility, told them your son was going in for an oil change, and that you would be paying over the phone with your American Express card, which the facility would pay extra credit card processing fees on to cover your extra points earned. You should have signed an estimate, legally binding the repair facility to the fact that they would not be able to exceed that estimate by either a dollar amount or percentage amount...whatever is stated by the state you live in. For example, in the state of Florida, no repair facility can legally charge anymore than $100 over the amount originally estimated without consent from the customer. This can be found online through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under Motor Vehicle Repair. As well, the Federal Trade Commission has a great website filled with all sorts of awesome information on how to be an informed consumer.
Did they take advantage of your son's ignorance? Probably. Did you let it happen? Yes. Did they rip him off? Not necessarily. You failed to mention the year/make/model of the vehicle, how many miles were on the vehicle, and the last time any of the above services were performed. $328.06 tax and all out the door for those full-synthetic services is a good a deal. And, no, I do not work for Jiffy Lube.
Unfortunately, not everyone thinks like you do...or myself for that matter. My repair facility (not Jiffy Lube) is only a mile or so away from a large local high school. I frequently run discounted oil changes for students, along with school faculty discounts. I have certainly recommended other maintenance and/or repairs to these students...based on either safety concerns or owners manual recommended maintenance, but I have never once allowed a high school student to authorize additional services/repairs without parental consultation first. I'm the mother of a 6 yr old who will eventually be a naive young man. I look out for my customer's children. If I think their children are driving around in potentially unsafe conditions, I most certainly bring it to their attention, but I do not push the sale on them without either them or I speaking with their parents first. This is not a requirement by any means, and you can't realistically expect everyone else in the world will look out for your children.
You can not blame a business for taking advantage of your child. You need to look out for him. This is the real world. They are running a business and presented him with information without discrimination. They didin't discriminate against him because he was younger. If they found low levels of broken down differential fluid and foul smelling coolant which wasn't protecting down to the temp it needed to, they might have recommended these services for this reason. Your son approved the services. You can't blame someone else for your neglect or your son's ignorance.
