Now listen my children and you will hear, a horror story that seems unreal.

In Oct of 2012 I ordered a book from John Kings bookstore for $2500 plus shipping. The book was signed by Harry Truman to my Grandfather. The book was to remain a part of my father's estate, but was sold at auction by my father's eighth wife.

I was ecstatic to find the book and was more than happy to pay Kings price to bring it home, and I paid King with my Visa card. At the time of sale they told me shipping would be $4.00 which was crazy to me. I told them I would pay the extra shipping for them to ship the book with insurance and signature required.

My request was ignored, and the nightmare begins......

No book after a few weeks, shipped delivery confirm which did show delivery in my town, but delivery confirm does get misdirected, as other email does at times.

Why anyone would ship a book of that value so irresponsibly is beyond me!

To make matters worse it has fallen on my shoulders to try to find the book. John King communicated with me a few times and expected updates. I filed a police report with the Garland Police Dept, spoke with Tom at the local branch of my Post Office and contacted neighbors and folks for whom I have received misdirected mail for such as Nadine who lives at 4822 Rollingwood while I live at 4822 Orchard Ridge. Tom who works for John King indicated that they had contacted my local post office. My local post office denies any contact was ever made by John King Books. When I asked King Books who they spoke to they did not respond.

I contacted my credit card company and filed a dispute. After several weeks the dispute was ruled in my favor because Chase disputes advised that King Books did not use care in shipping the book. They also advised that King Books did not submit proof of delivery, meaning that the book was signed for.

My name is now on King Books home page as a scammer. While they made a couple of minor revisions they never did include any mention of my efforts to find the book. There message to others is clearly meant to harm my reputation on the Internet and professionally.  You can read their scammer listings at http://rarebooklink.com

I have given Mr. Kings company two opportunities to fix their statement on their website and they have not done so.

I was visited by two Garland Police detectives this past week and gave them all the info I could. I even gave them access to a dumpster outside my house being used for clean up and renovations.

It has been brought to my attention that I have allegedly scammed others, I would love to see the proof that they claim they have. I think this wild goose chase is a horrible waste of our police departments time.

I would approach this company with caution. And if you do business with them use a credit card incase you, too have a problem. Much easier to dispute a credit card charge.

Wouldn't Know The Truth If It Bit Them You Know Where

AUTHOR: Mad As Hell - ()

POSTED: Sunday, April 13, 2014

I find it highly amusing that John King Books posts rebuttals, but do so without identifying who they are. Who is the anonymous employee?

If you will notice they seem to back pedal a great deal, it's ALWAYS the CUSTOMERS FAULT with them. BAD CUSTOMER. Never once have they ever admitted that they make mistakes.  They use excuse after excuse as to why something is nothing they did and how they are victims. The person who filed that complaint on Google is not lying as to their experience, but John King is attempting DAMAGE CONTROL by blaming anyone but themselves.

Originally when they shipped they paid $4 for shipping TOTAl, that COULD NOT include SIG CONFIRM as requested because that alone is $2.85 in cost. But yet they accuse me of ripping them off because I figured out how cheaply they shipped the book they were suppose to send me. You can't ship a book for $4 and have it include insurance or signature confirm. The truth is they were being cheap and lazy!

My police report was filed the SAME DAY they filed theirs and IN ADDITION I called the POSTAL INSPECTORS BEFORE THEY DID. I also communicated with my LOCAL POST OFFICE WAY BEFORE THEY DID.

I have COOPERATED FULLY with the POLICE, POST OFFICE and INSPECTORS and FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS an have SATISFIED THEIR INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER.

JOHN KING IS RESTORTING TO INTIMIDATION, HARASSMENT and BERATING me into paying them for a book I DO NOT HAVE.

They have ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF that the book was ever received by me. The POST OFFICE has dismissed their claim because they can't locate the book because JOHN KING TOOK NO CARE WHEN SHIPPING THE BOOK

DELIVERY CONFIRM is NO GUARANTEE that the BOOK was delivered to the CORRECT ADDRESS.

JOHN KING BOOKS also fails to mention the number of EMAILS that I had sent them, the AMOUNT OF TIME I HAVE SPENT trying to locate the book and IN ADDITION....

JOHN KING and I had phone converations where he TOLD ME about his HEALTH ISSUES and FINANCIAL issues

I think if JOHN KING knows ALL and is ABSOLUTELY INNOCENT in this matter that they should SUE ME AND PROVE their ALLEGATIONS.

I think JUDGE JUDY would love a CASE like this!

Answers from John King Books

We have never gotten a recorded message from Riss, ever.  She always knew how to call to talk to us during business hours to order the signed Truman book and to talk about the messy nature of her father's estate, but it is funny how she never could get ahold of us after ordering the book.  Riss only recently filed a police report (if she isn't lying).  She wasn't concerned about the book after it was delivered until we started calling her.  We did talk with the person she scammed and he was totally frustrated with Riss and her actions.  Also, this Google complaint she lists (if it is the person we remember) in inaccurate.  We contacted the purchaser the day we received the order (by email, as is our customery means when we receive an order by email that we cannot fill) and informed him that the book was not available.  He never read the email, it seems.  Also, we never took any money from him for the book that was sold...we never process the credit cards until the book is sitting here waiting for shipment.  This customer of ours did not lose any money, like we have lost with Riss.

An Honest Response

AUTHOR: Toni Riss - ()

POSTED: Saturday, March 22, 2014

In response to John King, he is correct in that the book was purchased in Oct 2013, and I apologize for that typo.

I do apologize for my typo, the transaction was in 2013.

However there continues to be a distortion of fact here which I am going to address.

When I spoke to Tom about the book I did ask him about shipping and he advised me that it would be shipped media mail, I suggested to him that he consider insuring the package and offered to pay the the additional shipping. I also suggested they might consider signature confirm.

Delivery Confirm affords no insurance unless you add it on, it also does not tell you exactly where the package ended up. In the event of misdelivery the Post Office has nothing to go on in this case.

This is exactly what the tracking into shows by USPS for the package that they claim they shipped properly shipped. There is nothing here to indicate anything other than delivery confirmation was used.

So, Mr. King why am I not to think that you didn't have insurance on the package, there is NOTHING indicated on this official Post Office page to indicate other wise and in fact the Post Office has verified that you ONLY shipped it with Delivery Confirmation.

Mr King also indicates that he does not have voice mail on his phones, but the number I called on this report does beep at the end of the recording and it does accept messages. In fact, I left a message on that machine the other day for them.

I also filed a police report with the Garland Police Dept and spoke with Dectectives this past week.  In fact I spoke with Postal Inspectors about the book and have never heard back from them. They reviewed the tracking information and I believe that they are aware of the issues in my area.

I have cooperated in every way possible and I have not written derrogatory, untrue comments about you folks until you attacked me first. The fact is you put profit before common sense and are now blaming me because the book has not been located.

And, yes, Mr. King, I have one other chargeback on record. I will provide any law enforcement official you deem fit with my Chase info and the Dispute department contact info so they may subpoena records.  The other company you mentioned charged me a lot of money on an asset search which they failed to perform. As the administrator to an estate it was imperative that an asset search capture all the assets. When they failed to perform their job I refused to pay them and ended up locating the assets on my own. As an administrator I bear fiscal responsibility for the estate so it is critical that I have correct information, otherwise I face financial liability.  Your attacks towards me seem to demonstate your own attempt to absolve yourself of your failure to follow resonable and prudent care with regards to my order.

My complaint about you may be the first to be posted about you here, but do you remember this Google complaint, Mr. King?

We purchased book from John K. King Used and Rare Books but it never arrived. We waited weeks and and when we finally asked where it was, we were told that it was already sold. The book should not have been on the website if it had previously been sold and we did not receive any email telling us it was already sold. We had to discover it for ourselves. Very disappointed in this business.

I could site other complaints, but overall you have offered great service locally to your community. I think you are lacking in your online sales, clearly.

You have never addressed why you would ship something of such value with so little care. You have never spoken with my local post office as you indicated you did.

So you tell me Mr. King what you want me to do. I have provided Tom with updates about my attempts to locate the book. Your bashing me online tells me a couple of things, you refuse to admit your cupability in this matter and your responsibility and you DO have a history with some online customers that is not pristine. I think before you start accusing people YOUR record should be blemish free.

I will be happy to provide any info to anyone you wish. I am also will to be subject to a background investigation if need be.

I am broken over the book, and as I told you MANY times as well as the Detectives, Chase and anyone else, I have always indicated that I would love to get that book back into my family. The problem is I don't know where it was delivered.

#1 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Response to Toni Riss

AUTHOR: John K. King Used & Rare Book - ()

POSTED: Saturday, March 22, 2014

This lady, Toni Riss, unfortunately is using this forum to justify ripping off our bookstore.  She has on numerous occasions lied regarding the book she ordered which (according to the USPS) was delivered to her; since she did not have to sign for the book, she decided to use that as an excuse to not pay for it.

FACT:  Toni Riss ordered the book in October 2013, not October 2012

FACT:  Toni Riss never discussed insurance and/or signature confirmation when ordering the book.

FACT:  While Toni Riss called us three or four times to discuss her family's troubled background before she even ordered the book, she never called us concerning the delivery status, and never called us to let us know she had not received the book (although she stated in her claim to her credit card company that she had called us and left a message on our "voice mail", we do not have "voice mail" on our phone, but only an answering machine, and no message from her was receivedon it); instead, she immediately disputed the charge, filing a chargeback with her credit card company.  We never learned about the book being stolen until the last week in November 2013, when we were debited by our credit company.

FACT:  We promptly filed a police report with the Garland, Texas Police Department, #2013R200709.

FACT:  We filed a report with the Postal Inspectors #29048800.

FACT:  We sent the Postmaster in Garland, Texas a detailed letter explaining the matter, along with copies of relevant documents.

FACT:  While we have no previous postings against us on Ripoffreport.com, Toni Riss had previously filed a report against another individual against whom she had filed a chargeback claim with her credit card company. (See Report #1038469).

FACT:  In Report #1038469 you will find a comment (#3) by a Karen Leonard.  The same Karen Leonard recently sent us an email wanting to know what proof we had against Toni Riss.  Obviously, if Toni Riss and Karen Leonard are not the same person, they are at least conspiring to slander two honest businessmen.

FACT: When I spoke to Toni Riss (in January 2014), she inadvertently described the package she claimed she never received; there is no way she would have known there hadn't been a signature required unless she had indeed received the package.  And, she assumed that there was no insurance on the package, as if had there been insurance we would have no reason to pursue the matter.  The post office considers the book delivered.

We are convinced that Toni Riss will be spinning more tales, and hopefully this posting will help people to be cautious when dealling with her.
