I bought my grandsons 2 Leapster products/games, some T-shirts & 2 shirts for my son-in-law (but wrong sizes). I went back on 12/26/12 to exchange (I had no receipt but the KMart tags were on all items). The Cashier & Assistant Manager said that's against their Company policy. The Leapster games I bought were not compatible with the Leap Frog Explorer and IPad which my grandsons had. I wanted to exchange them, but "No", "that's against our Company's policy!", I was told by the Cashier & when I asked to speak to the manager, someone who identified herself as the Assistant Manager said the same thing.
They would not let me exchange or get store credit, stating it was against store policy to accept any returns/exchanges without a receipt. Every other major chain store in this area will at least give a store credit, so I think this is just unacceptable. I WILL be telling everyone I know to skip shopping at KMart. No wonder they are going out of business! The Kmart at US1/SW 104 Street, Miami, FL has already closed & I can't wait for the others to close & the Company goes out of business nationwide. This Company is an old dinosaur & should become EXTINCT!!

I don't see how this is a "rip off" -- unless the store was going against a posted return/exchange policy.
If that's the case, I would contact their corporate office and escalate the matter.

To refuse an exhange of items which still are intact/unopened and have the Department's stores tags attached is NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY, does NOT encourage any customer from ever again shopping at KMart.
I will continue to spread this NEGATIVE feedback and I have told at least 53 people of my personal unfavorable experience. My daughter's amazement was that she had NEVER known me to ever shop at KMART and was unpleasantly surprised that I had. Now I know & remember why I never previously did and NEVER EVER do so in the future. I have posted this story of my experience on 6 websites for all to know.
As an aside, I had the same experience approximately 4 - 5 years ago with RADIO SHACK in Miami, FL, where they refused to do refunds. I predicted to the staff that soon the Company would go bankrupt, and the neighborhood stores closed one by one.
Well, so are the local KMART stores closing, one by one. I predict this company will NOT SURVIVE and WILL DESERVEDLY become EXTINCT, as they deserve to be!!
Granted not all stores are this way, but I can think of a couple Big Box stores, and several smaller chains that have similar policies. Even the stores that have what appears to be a much more open policy..have several parts of "fine print". There are other stores that use an "approval" service that limit the number of no-receipt and even with-receipt returns. Where you may return 2 items at Store A without a receipt, then when you try to return an item at Store B you may be declined because of your returns to Store A.
The simplest solution is to keep your receipts, then you won't have this issue.
