at its best!

I have been attending school at Kaplan University for over two years, only to be told that my degree means nothing! I was told by the top school in New York City that my degree is not credible because Kaplan is not "regionally" accredited (as I was told). See the link... (((Redacted)))In detail, I was told that the school does not fit the criteria of the "Middle States Association (which is an example of a regionally accredited agency- see the above)." I was told by the school that my degree would be accepted everywhere, without error! I am veteran who is service connected and lost two years of funding for school through the VA. Kaplan's degrees are only accepted in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Why take money from someone in New York or New Jersey- knowing that they cannot use their degrees? That is like selling a 2 piece living room set in a one small room apartment- that you know will not fit in the house (it would have to go back- why take the money for it). Every school is asking for my h/s transcript from ten years ago. I lost all of my money and my education thus far- is worth nothing. I am also stuck with student loans and no degrees... I have a 3.85 GPA! Now, I have to start all over and buy all new books... the problem is... Most of my funding is gone!

(((Redacted)))(I just found this link)

Here is the truth about Kaplan, in comparison to the realm of things: These practices are unfair and deceptive and I wish to file legal actions!!!

(((Redacted))).

Please look at all the links!!! Please!!!!! Help Me!!! Kaplan should not take money from people who they know they cannot benefit.

To the OP: I believe someone else already wrote that Kaplan is accredited by North Central, which is a regional accrediting agency. The reason your degree may not be acceptable elsewhere is because all of the other regional accrediting agencies have higher standards than North Central.  I was an academic advisor for many years and have completed thousands of evaluations for transfer credit (including  military). Our registrar was always wary of accepting credit from any school accredited by North Central because of this. For example, most accrediting agencies require that an instructor have, at minimum, a master's degree in the subject matter (if teaching an undergraduate course). This is not necessarily true of schools accredited by North Central. Consequently, we couldn't be assured that their courses met the same degree of college-level competency as our courses.

If you read through the ROR posted here you'll see that many students complain about Kaplan and other for-profit schools. From what I can tell (and have experienced myself while posing as a potential student), these schools practice exceptionally devious methods to get one to enroll.  I have posted elsewhere about this, and about the problems with financial aid.

NO school can promise that their degree is "accepted" by another school unless a written articulation agreement is in place. To other students considering college - PLEASE do your research first. Your local community college is often the best place to start.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but don't give up on your educational goals.

Hello I am very sorry to hear about this.  I have also had issues and have filed my report last night.  Where is the one you were attending located?  If you happen to file a legal dispute with them please let me know as I stated in my report if they do not assist me legally in my situation I will be doing the same as you.  I hope you get all of your situation taken care of and come out their mess completely.  Also for the ex employee that responded to the original report I would love to know your opinion on if what they are trying to do me in my report is their normal unethical procedure if you do not mind.  Wish you the best!

Willing to Assist

AUTHOR: jolei - (United States of America)

Let me know if you ever proceed with legal action.  After seven years of working with KU, I could provide insights into those deceptive practices that you described.

Very sorry to hear that you spent so much money on a limited or usless degree.

Many credits from many schools will not transfer

AUTHOR: Aaron - (U.S.A.)

If you plan to transfer you need to look into this.

The degree you got is fine. But schools are businesses so they try to honor as few transfer credits as they can to make more money. If you plan to transfer always check into it before you enroll at either school.

North Central accred. is all that is needed

AUTHOR: Cande9 - (U.S.A.)

North Central accred is all that is needed and is accepted at all schools. Possible your credits are not able to be transfered but the accredidation is acceptable.

Accreditation by more than one regional accrediting body is not permitted by the U.S. Department of Education. Regional accrediting bodies grant accreditation to an institution as a whole regardless of where it may operate, even locations that fall outside of a regional body's geographic scope. Additionally, the six regional accrediting bodies recognize each other's accreditations. Seeking additional regional accreditations is therefore unnecessary.
