In July of 2001 I attempted to start a computer repair business, and after receiving my certificate of authority, and obtaining my d.b.a. I opened a business checking account with Key Bank National Association.

This checking account was free of service charges for the first year, until July of 2002. In July of 2002, due to a lack of clients, and therefore money to deposit, I drew what remaining money was left in the account out, and told them to close the account. Apparently they did not honor my request, and started sending me over draft notices.

I had similar problems with personal accounts with them 20 years ago and no matter how many times they made mistakes and charged their bogus over draft charges, and I brought proof of their mistakes to them they always said it was my mistake, and that is why I left them then.

Since I learned 20 years ago it is pointless to argue with them because they are NEVER wrong, I ignored notices sent by them for the bogus over draft and service charges, to the tune of about $105.00. Remember, they have always been negligent with their record keeping.

I thought they straightened out their record keeping problems and practices when my girlfriend opened an account with them around the year 2000 against my warnings to her about them. Her account was OK for about 1-2 years, then the same things started to happen to her as well.

Needless to say, in April of 2003 I found out I was black-balled by Key Bank to CheckSys when I tried to open a bank account in 2 reputable banking institutions, and can not open a bank account with ANY bank for up to 5 years or more.

My girlfriend has since stopped using Key Bank as well, because they have stolen thousands of dollars in bogus over draft charges from her account also.

I would urge anyone considering them, DO NOT make this same mistake, and also anyone with accounts in this institution should remove their money and put them out of business, and use a reputable banking institution.

#1 UPDATE Employee

charged off account

AUTHOR: Rentacentersucks - (U.S.A.)

In order to close an account you would need to sit down with a manager and go over all of the information including a closeout form. If you just withdrew the money the account wasn't closed and depending on which account you had there may have been a monthly maintenance fee. If your account was overdrawn it couldn't have been closed until the account was brought back to a positive. In this situation it sounds like the account was in the negative long enough for the account to actually charge off and be sent to collections. If that is the case, then your account was sent to collections which will stop you from opening another account while you have outstanding debt with key. the easy way to solve  the problem is to pay off key bank or at least set up payment arrangements, however if your arrangements aren't fulfilled and you are able to open another account in the process they will close your account.

If you hadn't ignored their notices, you wouldn't have been "blackballed"

AUTHOR: Eryn - (U.S.A.)

You made your own bed when you decided to ignore their notices, obviously mistakes do happen, and if you had gone into the bank and explained the situation, more than likely the teller would have been able to reverse any charges and you would never have been reported to chexsystems. At the very least you could have called the 800 number and let them know the situation.

Just because they make a mistake doesn't mean they are out to get your money. It is a larger bank now than it was 20 years ago, and it stands to reason that you had resigned yourself to the opinion that they are a rip-off bank from your previous experiences, and therefore refused to even attempt to rectify the situation on your own. I'd say you got yourself into this particular mess, the bank may have broken the ground, but you kept on digging that hole deeper.
