I am writing in response to the various actions and what seems to be a cover up taken by the directors at Kindercare-Knowledge Learning Corporation and the corporate office regarding my pre-toddler son and the violation of his personal rights on several different incidents.

We have encountered a serious, ongoing problem involving the quality of care for our son while in the toddler classroom and the lack of a resolution when these numerous issues were addressed to center directors Robin Atmore and Donna Myers-Horton.

On July 30, 2007, I walked in early from work and found to my horror, our son woke from his nap early and was physically being restrained in a blanket, wrapped like a burrito, with only his head out, and was being held down on his stomach by teacher Ms. Shannon. During this restraint, my son was injured and his mouth was bleeding. When I questioned Ms. Shannon as to what she was doing and addressed his injury to her, she told me she was trying to make him go back to sleep. I addressed this to Robin and Donna, and her answer was that they have a nap policy in place. And told me she was going to have a meeting with her staff, and these are the only results I got regarding this. Later at some point she tried to tell me this was an accident and tried to twist the incident by stating he was never held down. I was there and saw what happened, so I am highly upset that she would state something like this to me. I filed a complaint with the state licensing board and they were cited.

In the first week of August, I sent an e-mail to Robin and Donna, regarding some additional concerns. I was not being provided with incident reports for any incidents that occurred with my son. For example, I was told by teacher Ms. Shannon on a seperate incident a week after he was injured on the mouth. I expect a report the day it occurs, not weeks later. This issue seemed to be resolved, as I begun to receive weekly incident reports.
On August 21, 2007, I picked up my son from the care of teacher Ms. Suh. I did not receive any incident reports nor was never provided with an answer to this incident. My son had a huge bruise on his forehead bigger than the size of a plum. She told me she didn't know how he got it, even though he was in her care. Robin questioned all the teachers, and he did not have a bruise, and got it while in the care of Ms. Suh. Robin told me she did not have an answer to how he got the bruise, and said, "It's one of those Life mysteries". This is unacceptable!

A few weeks ago, I picked up my son from the care of Ms. Suh, I asked her to change his diaper before we were to leave, and she grabbed my son by the arm and pulled him toward the changing table. My son was screaming and crying. I noticed a red mark on his arm after. I pointed this out to Ms. Suh, and I showed her what she did to his arm. She said to me, "Oh, I'm Sorry. My response was, "Be careful!" and I left the issue at that.
Monday, Dec.10, 2007. This issue came up again with Ms. Sue, but only worse. I picked up my son from her care, and went back to ask her to change his poopy diaper. She seemed flustered and grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him towards the changing table. My son was screaming and crying. I didn't notice right then, as my son was wearing long sleeves, but upon getting him in the car, I noticed red marks on his wrist and it was red and swollen with the impression of finger marks. I addressed this issue to Donna and showed her the marks on his wrist, and she told me that this was an accident and that her staff is trained. I had to take my son to the doctor, as his wrist was still swollen days later and was showing bruising. He was hesitant to use his wrist, and I suspected it may have been sprained. Donna stated Kindercare would pay for the doctor bills, and that she spoke to Ms. Suh and she said she apologized. I filed a police report and I filed a complaint with the State licensing board of CA, to date is still pending!
Time and time I get excuses that "our staff is trained". There seems to be an ongoing issue with lack of supervision.

Because ongoing issues with the teacher Ms. Suh, have not resulted in any improvements, I requested to Donna that my son be moved to the other toddler class and out of her care. During this process, I had inquired to the Ventura location to begin a transfer process, as I no longer trusted my son to be in their care, and in doing so, I found that Donna had gone to the Ventura site to come up with some sort of scheme and I was told their was a waiting list. My husband requested the background check process on these teachers, but Donna gave him the run around, stating she would fax it to him, then days later she tells him that she does not have to provide him with anything per Corporate Office. Time after time, I sent e-mails and requested a call from the district manager Jennifer Rice, but she avoided all calls and e-mails and never responded. Corporate office never returned my husbands messages either.

Two weeks later, I was not aware as I was working, my husband did call corporate highly upset after getting the run around with Donna, the acting director of the Camarillo Center, but the fact is that his statements were misconstrued and not written correctly by the receptionist accuratley, or another sheme construed by Donna!.

Despite this matter at hand, The issue remains that we were lied to by Donna, on all aspects regarding our treatment of our son, not addressing all of our concerns, and we have been getting the run around from Donna, she told us several different excuses and my issues have still not been addressed. Donna stated that Jennifer Rice was on Vacation, but we found she went on vacation several weeks later after our complaints were filed. So Donna lied and I am highly upset that this would come from her as I trusted in her, especially as she is acting as center director for our children! Upon our arrival to pick up our son, Donna and Robert Ovalle, an Orange County District Manager, had confronted us with the issue that they are disenrolling our son, without the option to transfer, because they claim my husband sounded threatening on the phone to the corporate office. Another plot! Just because they made the decision to disenroll my son, I still was NEVER given any concern or answers to my concerns. They just bury these incidents and try to appeal them with the complaints I filed to the State of CA licensing board! And where is corporate on this? They still never returned our calls!

Be careful

AUTHOR: Tgarcia - (U.S.A.)

You should really be careful about using people's names or titles in your vent letters because Ms. Shannon or the other Teacher can sue you for slander especially if they have proof that this did not happen after the investigation was done. I know if you used my name in a public vent like this I would sue you for defamation of charater and slander....but that's just me.

RESPONSE TO "Doesn't Make Sense"

AUTHOR: Kmg - (U.S.A.)

Of course you would state such comments if you worked there. Perhaps you worked in a better center that did manage to follow State Laws & Rules!

This Camarillo center DID NOT follow the "same principals & practices". They did not follow thr "Black & White posted" procedures!

At the beginning, I was a naive, 1st time parent & single mother, unaware of ALL of my resoures, but I was not a neglectful mother & I did not just "dump off" my child at daycare! I immediatley requested that the teacher in question NOT be allowed to care for my son, while the compliants were under investigation. I soon became aware of ADDITIONAL resoures DURING the INVESTIGATION & COMPLAINT PROCEDURE! & got the support I needed from my husband upon his return! AND JUST TO NOTE, MY SON NO LONGER GOES TO ANY CENTERS!

Yes, this complaint really does "speak numbers about the person I am". I am a VERY RESPONSIBLE MOTHER WHO IS PROTECTING MY CHILD'S RIGHTS & WELFARE! I WENT THROUGH THAT CENTER WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB! My husband had the right to confront that director! And any angry parent has the right to as well! But the director tried to hide behind a "dis-enrollment" to try to deviate from the investigation, is bull! And shows what kind of a director that is in charge of our children at that center. And I did not cause "problems for the center" I simply corrected their negligence and made parents aware of the coverups they try to hide & deny when they get busted! I still have yet to go through with the PARENTS PROTEST!

EVERY PARENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REQUEST THE PROCEDURE OF ANY TEACHER IN QUESTION CARING FOR THEIR CHILD! I SURE DO HAVE THE RIGHT & IT IS MY BUSINESS, ESPECIALLY IF THIS TEACHER IS CARING FOR MY CHILD! Also, to add to this, some people do commit crimes, after a "PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND CHECK" or the crimes do not show up 'on record' until often after a background check is completed!

These teachers do have a ratio, and they also have assistance. They are required to call for assistance when they need it, which often NEVER happened in this center! One time I walked in, and one teacher had 18 toddlers in her room. Unnacceptable. I went to the front desk & told it to the director! Teachers go into this job usually because they love caring for children & teaching children. If they do not like their job or grow tired of being a teacher, they should quit & NOT TAKE IT OUT ON OUR INNOCENT CHILDREN!

I do agree with you that "KinderCare is for profit". And I will add Knowledge Learning Corporation is in this business only for profit as well! That's a shame, THEY CARE NOTHING FOR THE PARENT'S CONCERNS NOR THE CHILDREN'S WELFARE & RIGHTS! JUST DO A SEARCH & LOOK AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS AGAINST KNOWLEDGE LEARNING CORPORATION AND KINDERCARE NATIONWIDE!!!

WHY? PART 2

AUTHOR: Sherri - (U.S.A.)

First of all, I agree with the responders who state that if you truly had concerns about your child's safety, you would not have left your child there one more day. But all of these alleged "incidents" and you continue to leave your child there, and then complain that they "disenrolled my son"?

Which is it? What is your complaint REALLY about? The fact your son was kicked out after your husband was threatening and abusive, or your allegations of neglect and abuse? It cannot be both. I would almost be willing to wager that you have already consulted an attorney who told you that you have no case, hence, your need to vent and contradict yourself on RoR.

Response to Doesn't Make Sense

AUTHOR: Kmg - (U.S.A.)

Of course you would make such sarcastic comments if you worked for Knowledge Learning Corporation!

Yes, I am aware, NOW, of the resources available to me. I was a naive mother, I admit, but not stupid! And Yes, It does really speak numbers abut the type of person I am & let me add to that also, the type of husband I have too!
Meaning I am VERY DETAILED & EXPECT AN ANSWER FOR ANY QUESTION THAT CONCERNS MY CHILD & HIS WELFARE & RIGHTS!
AND LET ME ADD THAT IT IS MY RIGHT & MY HUSBAND'S RIGHT TO QUESTION A DAYCARE PROVIDERS BACKGROUND IF THAT PERSON IS CARING FOR MY CHILD! EVEN AFTER THE FACT OF A "PRE-EMPLOYMMENT" BACKGROUND, SOME PEOPLE COMMIT CRIMES AFTER THE FACT TOO!

I understand daycare providers are busy all day changing diapers, learning activities & feeding...etc, I do this at home as a mother! But these teachers/providers have a ratio, and other teachers/providers to assist! This is the job they chose, and if they do not enjoy thier job, they need to get a diiferent job instead of taking it out on our innocent children!

The problem at this Camarillo Center was the opposite of what your comments were. They did not follow the "Black & White Guidelines" and when I caught them, the tried to cover it up instead of owning up t it! My husband confronted the daycare director and that was what I think any parent in there right mind would do! I did not leave my child in the care of the abusive teacher! I requested that she no longer care for him duing the complaint process. But, I was the nieve one and waited too long to pull him out of there because I was unaware of my resources while I was a single mother until I sought out help from Child Services and The State Licencing Board & the support from my husband!

Yes, I agree to your comment, Knowledge Learning Corporation is only in this business for profit. AND, I ADD THAT THEY DO NOT GIVE A CARE ABOUT ANY PARENT'S CONCERNS OR THE CHILDREN! I suggest you check out the other numerous comlaints they have against them & other Kindercare locations NATIONWIDE!

Witness

AUTHOR: Ap12 - (U.S.A.)

I commend you for reporting the company. I worked for a KinderCare in Tennessee and witnessed similar situations. I witnessed a lady drag a child who was less than 10 months old across a room by her arm. The child was screaming the entire way. I witnessed another lady get in a 1 1/2 childs face and yell at the child for spilling his plate (which wasn't his fault... the plate was handed to him instead of put on the table). I witnessed the 4 & 5 year old teacher take away snack AND outside playtime from a child because the child left a block on the floor. I witnessed the director restraining a child who wouldn't lay down on a mat during naptime and belittling this child by calling her a baby and telling her that she wasn't smart enough to lay down. And finally, I witnessed (everyday) the 3 year old teacher lying to a set of parents about their child's behavior knowing that the child was going to be spanked that night... this particular little boy was rambunctious, but didn't warrant being lied about. The "training" they give is watching 3 videos and then putting them in the classroom on the very first day of employment. The cook would use bleach and turn around and start handling hamburger buns or other foods without washing her hands first. My scheduled hours were 10-6 but I normally would stay later because parents would get there late, and I never got overtime... I was paid for 40 hours a week no matter if I worked 42 or more. Of course, they never paid me for 40 hours if I got to leave an hour early one day... those weeks I would have 39 hours. The assistant director told a parent to "F*** off" and "your child is not welcome anymore"... She didn't even get reprimanded by the director... those comments were made in front of the child. After the parent took the child out, she didn't get reimbursed for the 2 weeks she had already paid for and they took his name off the roll the next day. I understand why you left your child there... it is hard to find a new daycare on such short notice... many facilities require a 2 or 3 week notice that your child will be starting. If you took your child out, you would be out of work for 2 or 3 weeks. My last week there went like this: on Monday, they let a child stay that had a virus... I am very susceptible to viruses so naturally I got it and called out on Tuesday. On Wednesday my temperature was still above 100 but they made me come in. On Thursday they told corporate that I was on medicine and had fallen asleep... of course, falling asleep is against policy. I had 3 witnesses who said I didn't fall asleep, but they "didn't have to talk to them about it" because apparently the asst. dir. had witnessed it. What the asst. dir. didn't tell was that she was in her classroom the entire day because we didn't have a floater. They even told corporate that the incident had happened on Tuesday, and if you remember, I wasn't even there on Tuesday. Anyway, I hope you get money for pain and suffering out of this. I wish I could be in CA to testify against them! Good luck, and I hope everything turns out well! Congrats on the marriage!!!

Doesn't make sense...

AUTHOR: Christine - (U.S.A.)

Honestly, I have worked for Knowledge Learning Corporation-Not this location, but a Southern CA Kindercare. I probably have more positive things to say about this company then negative; and though every site is different, they all run under the same principles, practices, and most importantly, answer to the same "Community Care licensing" department as ANY and ALL Title 22 Child Development programs are required to report to.
This is to all Parents who must work to earn a living, and put there children in programs such as KinderCare.

There are many resources available to you online, in Department offices, and libraries that offer "check lists" on what to look for in quality child care programs.
If you suspect for one second that your child is being miss treated, it is YOUR responsibility as a PARENT to protect him/her!!!! You tend to lose creditability if you are complaining of an abusive teacher, but continue to drop your child off in their care while you "look" for other options.

Also, seeing how KinderCare, and other large preschools are owned and operated by a large corporation, if you are unhappy with one school within that corporation (in this case, Knowledge Learning Corporation) transferring to another school probably won't make matters better!!

Children/Teacher ratios: In California, the state allows 12 toddlers (2 year olds) to ONE qualified teacher! (Infant and children under 1 year old- 4:1 )Seeing how this is an outrageous amount of small children to have in one person's care; (qualified or not-) at any given time, a lot of schools lower that ratio as a curtosey to staff, and a sell point to parents. However, it is not realistic to expect that schools will practice this 100% of the time! For one, preschools are consistently under staffed! Asking a resonable person to obtain 24 or more ECE units so they can make $8.00 an hour working with 2 year olds all day is not exactely ones dream job. So if you happen to walk into your child's childcare center, and he has a BM, change him, and GET OVER IT!!! Toddler teachers MUST keep a record of every child's poop, pee, dry etc...Dry, wet, or not...teachers are required BY LAW to at least CHECK the child's diaper EVERY hour. If you are present, and want to change your child's diaper, you have every right to do so. The only thing they may ask of you is to use the practices in which they use for sanitation reasons. And this practice is posted in BLACK AND WHITE right above the changing station!

If you are just so offended that your child has a bowel movement when you pick him up; look at his record for the day. Find out when he was checked/changed last. With a possible 23 other kids to change and care for, chances are he was just checked/changed, and managed to poop right before you walked in; and or he was coming up for a change. Do you really think any right minded child care worker wants to sit around in a classroom with the fresh smell of a little person's number 2? Give me a break!!! If you find this method unacceptable, hire a nanny!!

Benefits and perks of a position in preschools are unsatisfactory at best. Oh, and FYI; the state of California has to "clear" anybody and everybody who works in the center 3 days upon hire. This includes staffs background/fingerprints/any criminal offenses. If driving and transporting children, they also must have a current clean driving record. An assistant or center director of a facility has a clearance phone number to call to get a "cleared or not cleared" status from the state licensing board. If they are not cleared, they canno't work in the facility. That is public information. If you are so concerned about staffs' background, do the research yourself! Records on all state licensed facilities are available for public view at department offices! Why would any body in management hand over a teacher/or other staff personel file to you? That is none of your business!

What IS YOUR business, is the care, procedures and practices of your child's center. Which is why they are required to extend an open door policy. You can walk in at ANY given time to observe, visit, ask questions etc. Bottom line is this: YOU are the parent, YOU chose to have a child whether a single parent, married, a lot of family support or none; YOU are responsible for the safety and well being of your own child/ren. Do not dump your child in a facility, make a million complaints, and expect people to just bend over backwards for you.

Also... Along with many other large Child care facilities, KinderCare is a FOR Profit business. They wouldn't diss-enroll your child for just anything!!! That is there bread and butter. You could have the devils first born enrolled, and they'd still give you the benefit of the doubt. So to be diss-enrolled from a center like this REALLY speaks numbers about the kind of person you are, and the problems you caused for this center. ESPECIALLY when you stated that you had already moved your kid from another center you took issue with. How many centers has your poor child been enrolled in just this year?

Response to WHY??

AUTHOR: Kgonzales - (U.S.A.)

If you read the report, I was looking to transfer my son to any other daycare center but had been put on various waiting lists for an opening, during this whole nightmare. Like I stated in my report, perhaps I should have stayed home & lost my job. During this time I did take reponsibility & contact the directors, corporate, the State Licensing borad & Child Services!

As for the diaper changing demand, there were times where I would change my child's diaper on arrival, but was told by a teacher that they had to do this because of sanitary reasons & rules they had to follow. Furthermore, their job was to care for my child, which includes changing his diaper. My character is NOT of bringing in my child to school in pajamas, and I do not leave my child in soiled diapers!! I demanded that teacher to change his diaper, because she needed to know it was unacceptable for her to send him home in a poopy diaper! I was correcting her! Time after time I notifed the center director only to be told, we will talk to our staff. What more could I have done? Judging by your rude comments, I question YOUR character!!!

Why??

AUTHOR: Mariem - (U.S.A.)

What I am saying is that if things happend the way you said they did and you finally had the support (I'd even not stick around there if I had no family support) why did you stay around? Why subject your child to ongoing abuses at the hand of this child care facility?
The other thing that bothers me in this is the fact that you took your child back in after getting him from Kindercare and demanded they change your child's diaper. This speaks loads as to your character. It also reminds me of the parents who would come into the center in the mornings with their child still in pajamas with a night diaper full of urine and thought it was the staff's responsibilty to dress and diaper their child.
I can see you coming back into the center and asking to use the changing table (which is totally acceptable) to diaper your own child, but not to ask THEM to change YOUR child. If your child had a diaper full of BM which was obviously there for quite some time and you discovered that at changing him it would be up to you to get the Center Directer. You would need to show her and ask her to address the problem with the staff. Having dried bm on a child is totally unacceptable and they would need to be diciplined.
What it all boils down to is this, you are the one responsible for protecting your child. To continually go to a bad center where you suspect abuse is going on is unconscionable. This doesn't let the center off the hook, if things happened as you say then the State needs to be involved and the center needs to be sited and monitored better until it is in compliance.

In your first post you said you were married
"Two weeks later, I was not aware as I was working, my husband did call corporate highly upset after getting the run around with Donna......."
Now when you were asked why did you keep your child in a suposive abusive situation that you were aware of you say
"I, as a first time, inexperienced, single mother at the time, had no support from any family or friends........"
Which is it?
I still find it very puzzling why ANY parent would leave their child in a situation such as this. I am finding this story hard to believe after being caught out in a lie.

Update on Kindercare Camarillo

AUTHOR: Kgonzales - (U.S.A.)

I am still somewhat sickened at the call I recieved from the State of CA licensing board last night regarding the completion of the investigation regarding my complaint on Kindercare Camarillo. I was told Kindercare was cited for the first incident with Ms. Shannon restraining my son & causing his mouth to bleed because the teacher admitted to it. But regarding the second incident with Ms. Suh and my son being bruised on his wrist while he was grabbed, was found unsubstanciated because the teacher and director denied it, even though I showed her the marks on him and took him to a doctor! I was also told that Ms. Sue quit her job, and Robin the Director is no longer there. As for Donna, I'm not sure if she is still there or not. I WILL say that DONNA should NOT be caring for our children and definatley should NOT be acting as the new director!!! She can't take responsibility for what happened there and insteads covers everything up and coaches her teachers what to say to the investigators so she can climb up the corporate ladder! MY ADVISE TO ALL PARENTS IS DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN IN THE CARE OF KINDERCARE! And for those new and inexperienced mothers, just as I am, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN AT KINDERCARE! I say I have learned from this nightmare, and thank goodness nothing worse had happened to my son or any other children!

Kindercare-Knowledge Learning Corporation Violation of Child's Personal Rights Camarillo California

AUTHOR: Kgonzales - (U.S.A.)

Here you will read the horrifying experience we went thorough with Kindercare and Knowledge Learning Corporation. I, as a first time, inexperienced, single mother at the time, had no support from any family or friends. I had just removed my son from one other sperate center due to negligence and placed him into Kindercare. During these incidents at Kindercare, I was seeking a different daycare center for my son to attend. I was put on several waiting lists. Others I had come to find were unacceptable due to several citations by the state of CA. I can say this, perhaps I should have just pulled my son out & stayed home to care for him until I found a place for him to go, and even if that meant losing my job. Take it from our experiences, DO NOT TRUST IN KINDERCARE TO CARE FOR YOUR SMALL CHILDREN!!!

Is that the ONLY day care center in town? Why didn't you pull your son ou after the FIRST incident? Why didn't you change your childs diaper yourself? You are trying to tell us that you are such a caring parent, yet you left your son in that place for many months more. Doesn not sound very caring to me.
