The Knights of Columbus, a Christian, Family, Fraternal, Service organization is actually a front for a tax exempt Insurance Company who doesn't care for its members.

As a member of the KofC I have volunteered countless hours of charitable service in their name to our community. Helping others is always rewarding to me. HOWEVER, when I applied for their INSURANCE (that is always pushed) I was told that since I have had some medical problems in the past that I din't qualify for life insurance through the organization.

Remember, this is an organization that only exists because there are millions of members doing millions of hours of charitable work in their name so they (the Insurance arm) can keep their tax exempt status.

My beef is this! Since I am partly responsible through my chairitable works, for their keeping a tax exempt status and reducing their overhead, why don't I AUTOMATICALLY qualify for their insurance?

I look at it this way. If I were employed by a large firm who provided insurance to their employees. EVERY employee, including me, would be covered. Rates may be higher, but covered nonetheless. I feel strongly that if I'm good enough to raise money for them, they should be REQUIRED to quilify me for insurance coverage.

I have spoke with numerous "agents" of theirs regarding my position, and the answer is always the same. "I agree, but there's nothing I can do"

I feel that in regard to the Insurance wing of this organization that their Tax Exempt status should be investigated, and removed since the K of C is in my opinion only an Insurance Company covering as a chairitable organization so they can enjoy unearned profits!

Guaranteed Insurance!?!

AUTHOR: Ace - ()

From your description of the Knights of Columbus, you obviously do not really know the history of the Order. Insurance IS the reason for existence of the Knights of Columbus. The fraternal side of the charitable works are a plus that comes from the willingness of Brother knights to volunteer time, talents, and treasure to better those less fortunate.

The first principle of the order is Charity, and charity starts at home. You do not mention your age or circumstance of your request for Insurance. Understand that the Knights of Columbus is in the business of protecting Knights' families from financial burden in the event of loss of a breadwinner. Many members only seek insurance once they are sick or about to die..........that's like buying homeowners insurance after your house burns down or auto insurance on line at the site of your accident.

If you are uninsurable, there is a product that you can buy without medical questions, but it must be done before age 65. The Knights of Columbus have many more rating classes than many commercial companies, and if you were declined, then there is probably a justified reason. Underwriting is quite different than simple medical prognoses, because risk assessment is involved in the final decision.

Your comments only reinforce why every Catholic gentleman should join the Knights of Columbus, and why they should protect their families as young and healthy as possible.....so as to avoid the possibility of uninsurability.

You may want to check the financial ratings of the Knights of Columbus Insurance and also read where they were chosen as one of two most ethical companies in Life Insurance in the world by Ethnisphere Institute.

I am sorry for any health problems and age constraints that might have prevented you from being insured, but if you waited too late in life to take care of your family then the guy to blame is staring back at you in the mirror.

Re: Donate directly to the Knights

AUTHOR: Brian - (United States of America)

Oh Norman Dacey the man who owned an estate and trust consulting firm?  You speak of people being ripped off, trusts are some of the largest scams out there.  Unless a person owns large plots of land i.e. farms or have special need children there is no need to pay a person to administer over a trust.

The KC offers both Whole and Term insurance.  I should know, because I own both.  The Knights allow people to annuitize their Whole Life insurance.  They also offer annuities another Knights product I own.

Re: These Ranking Knights like to slam doors!

AUTHOR: Brian - (United States of America)

I don't even know where to begin with your post.  It's very incoherrant and all over the place.  In what year did you become a knight?  How many degrees did you attain?  When did you take out this $5,000 policy?  Finally why would a 4th degree member send in insurance paperwork?  Do you mean the field agent who was also a 4th degree member?

B.T.W

Knights are forbidden to bring partition politics into a meeting and the Order.  We however have no problem calling out politician who support anti-social and immoral behavior (abortion, homosexuality, ect) whether they be Dems, Reps, or Independents.

Donate directly to the Knights

AUTHOR: honest catholic - (United States of America)

The Knights fo Columbus is a great organization. They do alot of good things for the catholic community. And if you want to help them out give them a donation dont buy thier Insurance!!

Most of what they sell is whole life insurance. Sorry to all you agents who believe that you have to have insurance for your Whole Life. Dont you think people who can barely make it now days middle class people who work hard for thier money should learn ways to Save for retirement? I think people should get on a program to save now when thier young. So that when they get old they are not still paying for insurance.

And if you really want to know how Whole Life insurance works Read the Senate report on Whole Life Insurance. Or Whats Wrong with Your Life Insurance by Normand Dacy.

Because you see, you have what they call a savings account, that you get to 'barrow' from. Why should you have to pay interest to barrow your own money? And if you dont pay it back before you die they take that amount off of your death claim. Somethings not adding up right.

If the knights are going to sell insuance why dont they sell pure term? And teach thier fellow man to learn how to invest so that in thier golden years they can enjoy spending time with thier families while they are still alive!!

These Ranking Knights like to slam doors!

AUTHOR: ferms1 - (United States of America)

I am curious how these ranking Knights of Columbus assume that someone would join a group for insurance via hidden agendas!  I became a New Knight and was excited about helping people and than my sponsor or insurance agent, a ranking Knight suggested the insurance.  Hmmm I was surprised on day showing up early for meetings(I guess to early) to have the door slammed in my face sitting while officers had private meeting(ranking Knights) Sure and found some members very polite mentioning that only high ranking have closed meeting before general meetings.  I was surprised how arrogant to treat new members with actions of unfriendly greetings, Christians??? I was well aware of proper "closed meetings" agenda but was not prepared for arrogant actions!  I have been a past Director of the Kiwanis and other professional groups and was surprised by actions of officers if they felt like not having follow-up meeting and dismissing.  What a waste of my time and positive attitude.  The meetings were not prepared and the information that new members were interested in was in most cases not communicated!!!  I dropped my insurance(5,000 dollars) as a added insurance because I assumed I was doing the Knights of Columbus some extra business via the reputation expressed by agent or 4th Degree.  I had a problem with them still taking out payment in my electronic account after cancel or termination.  Excuse from 4th Degree Knight was he sent paper work out.   Dah?  I might mention that I am pro-active and have written many articles via my rights as a Democrat and it was communicated to myself that some members had a problem with my articles.  BS is what I say!  I am a Catholic who graduated from a Catholic High School who is a volunteer Hospice people person period!  I am a senior who did volunteer work for many groups long before K of C came along and can spot discrimination like a cat seeks a rat!  Just pure control via a group of ranking people assuming control of my Catholic Church!

I was not aware that one seeks service clubs for Insurance

AUTHOR: ferms1 - (United States of America)

Yes I did not know that Knights of Columbus assumes people join for Insurance.  Kiwanis, Elks, Lions, Jaycees, Hospice and many others does not offer cheap insurance for doing Charity work but Knights of Columbus assumes when a member has a beef they want insurance?? Or because they can't get covered they should not be upset because Knights of Columbus needs that money to protect their priests via legal fees????????  Being sick is a sin and concern should not be focus of Knights of Columbus??  Is that like being two-faced via charity????

Tax exemption and "relative" in probate

AUTHOR: Phoenix - (United States of America)

The agent summed it up well.  Our writer is disgruntled since his health precluded regular insurance.  He does have the FREE $2,500 on he and his wife as long as he has maintained his membership.  He can get the Graded benefit life as long as he is walking and breathing and not confined to bed or a wheelchair or oxygen for a major portion of the day.  He should check into that.  Annuities and IRAs are also available for added coverage.
Tax exemption is not earned by providing free insurance to everyone.  The majority of profits, as stated by anotherresponder, are returned to the members in dividends and a share of excess profits.  They may not (by law) be retained by the company.  And, yes, this is investigated regularly to maintain the tax exempt status!
As far as our "relative" and the probate situation... It would appear that a beneficiary was named and they died with no contingent beneficiary named and no records submitted to "prove" line of family inheritance.  That case would warrent probate which only occurs in such situations where eligibility is contestable.  This is not the KofCs fault but the LAW.  Our writer should see what steps his "relative" missed to create this probate situation.
A suggestion to all... Make sure you keep your beneficiaries updated and clearly indicated to avoid such embarrasing and costly problems.  This is the insureds responsibility (or their "relative" if they are concerned that rightful inheritance be maintained.
The Knights has been doing upstanding business for its members and their families for nearly 130 years now and has even offered lessons to other financial entities on upright and profitable business procedures.  They are to be commended and emulated.
Communication solves many problems before they occur.
Vivat Jesus!

K of C rip off people

AUTHOR: Darrin - (United States of America)

My relative had life insurance with knights of Columbus,  he passed away and now Kof C will not pay!  Now there is talk of it going to probate but if that happens all the money that is coming to my relative will be eaten up by the lawyers.  The Knights of Columbus is a  horrible group of people.

Knights of Columbus Insurance

AUTHOR: William - (U.S.A.)

Sam,

First of all thank you for all of your volunteering hours, I am sure the lives you have touched are very thankful. You should feel very good about that.

I am very sorry you were turned down for "additional" insurance in the past, HOWEVER, it seems that you have forgotten that as a "dues paying member in good standing" ALL members of the Knights of Columbus HAVE a fraternal accidental life insurance benefit.

This fraternal benefit is for you AND your spouse. This benefit starts at $1,000.00 for each of you and tops out at $2,500.00 each after 4 years of your membership.

So that is $5,000.00 of accidental insurance between the both of you that you must not forget about. Review your benefits package again.

I would also speak to your field agent in GA right away or call (203) 752-4000
and ask about the Knights of Columbus "Graded Benefit Whole Life" policies that are available to you in your condition, whatever it may be.
It may cost you about $1 @ day depending on your age, but you can get MORE insurance if you'd like. Annuities, Long-Term Care and IRAs are available too.

Standard & Poors reports that 87% of the earnings of The Knights of Columbus is returned to the membership. Its consistently strong profitability is attributable to high persistency rates, favorable mortality experience, and strong investment returns over the past 10 years.

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson welcomed the news from S&P, and noted that despite the difficulties suffered by so many well-known financial institutions due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis, we have not only remained solvent but improved our financial stability, while continuing to provide top quality products and service to our members.

Please check it out for yourself:

The Knights of Columbus financial review is available online too:

The Knights of Columbus have been there for Catholic families in need for over 127 years.

Sam, may this information find you healthy and happy and may God bless you and your family.

Sincerely,

Bill Wisniewski

Knights of Columbus Underwriting Standards

I concur with other members.

The Knights need to have high underwriting standards to keep the quality of their products high.

I am a Knight.

I know and respect the quality of their products and integrity of their agents.

You are not totally denied coverage, however.

Let me offer you one option: contact me.

I am an agent with another Fraternal Benefit society and may be able to assist you.

Pushed and Denied

AUTHOR: Daniel - (U.S.A.)

yes, people who sell always "push" their products. it is their job. it is a testament to the knights that they do not sell to everyone on whom they push their products. it is a sign of their integrity, they are not just in it for the money. as to the limosine statement, not all people who get ride in limos are necessarily wealthy, not all people who drive pintos are poor.
The knights is exist because of many things. Charity comes in many forms, one of which is time spent, the other is money spent. All of it is charity. The knights do not exist without either one, time given or money. Just like anything in life.
There is no corruption here.

The Knights were created for insurance

AUTHOR: Paul - (Cote D'ivoire)

You are just pissed because you are unhealthy. You are a classic case of a guy who got turned down. Just because they are non-profit does not mean that you qualify for the insurance. Could you imagine the amount of people who would take advantage of the organization. If I was sick, I would buy 1 million dollars of insurance in a second. You must be real sick because the knights are quite tolerant but cannot accept some risks to protect all the other members in the order. They are not rated A++ and AAA for nothing.

If the Knights had no insurance program, there would be no Knights to support the charitable programs.

Don't be mad because you were to dumb to get insurance when you were young and/or healthy, why do you think they tell you to get it when your healthy?

They are a great organization with great values and are truly there to help out brother Knights.

Maybe you just joined for the insurance??

AUTHOR: Enrico - (U.S.A.)

You are wrong by saying that "you should automatically qualify".

If that were the case, then many people would join "JUST" for the insurance, which seems to be the reason you did.

If you truly are a Knight, then you understand that they are an insurance company like the others, they have to have policies to protect themselves from individuals that want to take advantage of their A+ rated Insurance.

Focus on what the Knights are about and why they are the largest catholic fraternal organization in the world.

The satisfaction of the service you provide to your church and others out weighs evreything!
