Kroger sells outdated (use by date) deli meats and meals to unwary customers. Twice I asked for a discount on items due to the date of use being past and they told me they do not sell those items, but there they were on the shelf. I asked what happens if I unwarily purchase this item and was told that they would refund the purchase price. It is illegal for them to sell the outdated items, period.

Kroger ? ! ? ! ? ! ? you said it was illegal for them [Kroger] to sell it to you and since you knew about it, why did you try to buy it?

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

I have shopped at Kroger in Kentucky, Tennessee and now in Texas and I have generally found their meat to be superior to Albertsons, Wally World, Safeway, Piggy Wiggly, and the rest.

If I understand your posts and please correct me if I've made an error, but you said it was illegal for them [Kroger] to sell it to you and since you knew about it, why did you try to buy it?

Wouldn't that be tantamount to a Police Officer helping the drunkard into his car and then giving him a ticket when he drives off?

Are you aware of something called "mitigating your own circumstances"?

It means that if you know of something bad that's happening to you and you can take steps to correct or stop the action, you are supposed to. Since you knew the meat was out of date - you then had the knowledge to prevent yourself from buying it.

Sounds like you tried to get something for nothing, but I may be mistaking.

I agree but no need to be rude she just wanted a deal and is ticked that she did not get one

AUTHOR: Cindy - (U.S.A.)

In response to the employee of Kroger. I absolutely agree with you that it sounds like she just wanted a deal and is ticked that she did not get one, however, the name calling is SO uncalled for! If your rancid meat didn't get me in your Kroger, your attitude would. A bad employee is just as bad as a bad product and you are not making Kroger look any better with such a rude response to a customer complaint. Maybe your store should look at your response and decide if you should be "servicing" their customers. If you were my employee today, you would not be tommorow after that! Think about how you handle things before you respond and maybe people would take you more seriously and care what you have to say. Sounds like maybe to me you are taking your aggression out on her because maybe you have been called pea brain one too many times in your life. Therapy may help with that! Have a great day! :)

Kroger sells bad meat

AUTHOR: Kerri - (U.S.A.)

Kroger has sold me bad meat! I was having my family over to my new home for a BBQ amd bought chicken earlier the same day. The whole family was here and the grill was hot. I opened the pack of chicken I purchased earlier the same day and the smell of rancid meat filled my home. I checked the label on the meat and the sticker said it was a week until experation.I then pulled the label off and was met with another sticker that said the meat had been expired for a week. Someone had covered the old sticker with a new one!! I put the chicken in a bowl and drove right back up to Kroger because this wasn't the first problem I have had. I took the meat, while gagging, up to customer service with my receipt. I was not even given a apology. The cashier said "Do you want to return it"? I said " Of course I do! Dont you smell it"? He says " Yeah it stinks" DUHHHHH!!!! So I did end up exchanging the chicken because my whole family was waiting hungry at my home. When I got home it had started to rain. THANKS KROGER!!!!

A Problem Keeping Old Products off the shelf??!!?!?!

AUTHOR: Al - (U.S.A.)

Just a quick note. I worked for Winn Dixie many moons ago, and we had this 'strange' procedure for perishable items, it was called ROTATION, where the newest items goto the back and the oldest to the front. It was very easy to remove dated products (usually marked down 1-2 days before expire date). This was policy in all departments. Never had any problems with selling out of date items. Could it be that Kroger's Union has a problem with their members actually doing quality control?

I have also ran into out dated items in Food Lion and Harris Teeters, and they are supposed to have product rotation as well. Sounds like laziness to me.

Just keeping up appearances,

Outdated food at Krogers in Midland

AUTHOR: Aaron - (U.S.A.)

Well, I am not usually one to get into other peoples arguements, however, in this case I feel I have to agree with the original poster.

I shop at Krogers in Midland as well, and have noticed the same thing, meats and more that have gone past the experation date, sometimes by a matter of 2 or 3 days.

Also, when I was there the last time, I found packages of Kraft cheese that were almost 3 weeks past the experation date. When I contacted the department manager regarding this, he said "Well, sometimes it's hard to catch these things, so they don't get pulled"... I went back 2 days later to get some "fresh" cheese, and found 6 more packages which had long since expired and still hadn't been taken off the shelves.

While I understand that yes, sometimes it is hard during busy times to catch every little item in a huge shelf, why, after someone complains, is it STILL not taken care of.

Furthermore, I would like to say that name calling and such as was done by a supposed employee of krogers shows very bad taste in customer service and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if a letter to the manager of that store would show him his poor judgement in hiring such a manager (If she even does work for krogers)... I have been in retail for 9 years and if I ever talked to a disgruntled customer like that, I'd fire myself.

If you're going to play, play fair

AUTHOR: Tammy - (U.S.A.)

Vicky,
As I suspected, you did not take the time to read what I wrote nor did you understand it. Those employees did not intentionally leave outdated product on the shelf. That, I believe. And yes, I can read. What I wrote was: (And I copy and Paste) "We make every attempt to offer fresh, high quality product. Sadly, things get missed sometimes. We are all human." I'm sure if those employees knew it was out of date they would have pulled it off the shelf. THAT is our policy. Maybe if you had talked to the deli manager or store manager they could have stressed the importance of this to their crew. I think you should have at least given them the chance. And thank you Vicky, for letting the general public know for us that they have corrected the problem. Happy Holidays :)

my pea brain

AUTHOR: Vickie - (U.S.A.)

Dear Tammy, perhaps you should read the FOOD LAW OF 2000; act 92 of 2000. I can read can you?
The food which is outdated has to be specifically marked. When I wrote my report the outdated foods were not specifically marked. They were being sold to unwary customers. Now the meats dept. manager puts the outdated or nearly outdated items in a special spot at a reduced price. Also, items are tagged in other areas of the store to show they are near or outdated at a reduced price. My complaint did not go unnoticed did it? So my pea sized brain did some good. Have a blessed day.

We shouldn't sell it, but you want it reduced????

AUTHOR: Tammy - (U.S.A.)

Dearest Vicky,

As I'm sure you are perfect you will not understand my reply, but I am going to make an attempt that your pea sized brain will understand this:

Kroger and it's sister companies have some of the highest food safety standards in the grocery business. I know because I am a deli manager and an enforcer of these standards. We make every attempt to offer fresh, high quality product. Sadly, things get missed sometimes. We are all human. My question is this: If as you say, it is against the law to sell outdated product, then why on EARTH would you expect us to mark it down so you can buy it cheaper? You are just looking for a bargain and are ticked because you didn't get one..........
