Search Tips- So here is a question. If someone impersonating your wife deposited the check, why instead of reporting this "fraud" to the Credit Union did you withdraw the funds after 5 days?
You didn't give any details of this "check", but I would hope that you were not so dumb as to fall for one of the hundreds of check scams out there. So sorry if this comes off as rough, but starting off your "ripoff" saying that someone who was impersonating your wife deposited a check, but you withdrew the funds a few days later doesn't have you looking so good.
As for "safeguards" the best safe-guard is "common sense". But beyond that the bank and credit union has certain rules it must follow in making the check available. Just take a look at Regulation CC and you will see that they must make the funds available after a certain amount of time..even if it hasn't actually "cleared". It is very likely that this was a "scam" check and the credit union now no longer wants to take a risk on any of your accounts. As such they closed your account. Just like you have a right to close your account at any time without notice, they have that same right. And neither of you have to give a reason.
Now, if by some chance this was a legitimate check that the person just didn't have the funds. Then go after them for all of the expenses(time and cost) that you have had to incur because of their bad check.
