Hi my name is Elizabeth and I am being harassed by LHR Inc. a debt collection agency in NY. In 1996 before I met my husband, he bought a truck. He then got enlisted in the army and sent his girlfriend the money to make the payment....she never did and it got repossessed. The company (nafco, I believe) sold the truck and put it towards his debt. The balance stayed on his credit report and was gone before I ever met him. In 2005 I started to receive papers in the mail from LHR Inc. stating that he owed $8,000.00 and we needed to pay immediately. I called them and told them they must be wrong. They said you must not know your husband that well then. After that I continued to receive threatening phone calls all day long. I counted 12 calls in one day. They proceeded to tell me I would be arrested, they would put a lien on my house, they would have someone come to my house and pick up my vehicle for compensation, garnish my wages...at one point I was so afraid of going to jail I drove around aimlessly all day with my child in the car. Most of these threat were made by "Will". So finally I gave in and started to make $25.00 a month payments. We settled at $2000.00. The account balance is now over $9,000.00. Right now we are going through a difficult time and I could not make last months payment. Mrs. Brota from LHR degraded me and told me she was not my babysitter among other things and few different choice words. I told them to stop taking out payments from my account because I would be charged a fee from my bank. They refused and said it would come out on the 5th of next month and to make sure the money was there, "it was my problem". I am well aware that what they have done is illegal and have contacted a few lawyers. My husband called Mrs. Brota today and asked her for the original contract from nafco and she said it would take 6 months to get it. She couldn't even tell us how they came up with a calculated amount of what we owe. (she hung up on him of course)I have sent the atourney general a complaint, although no action has been taken as of yet. Originally I was only going to hire a lawyer to get them off my back but I have now decided to sue. A great place to find a lawyer is your local county's lawyer refferal service.
