AUTHOR: Sparky - (United States of America)

You don't reason with him... he's a tape recorder for conspiracy theories from the minds of basement-dwelling, whackjob morons. Why would I bother googling his suggestions? For all I know, half of them are laced with keyloggers or are just a complete waste of time altogether. If I am interested in researching something, I'll do it myself; I don't need some anonymous one-trick pony to try and sell me on his insanity. I just found the interaction to be humorous... you can give him all the logic in the world and refute every single one of his arguments intelligently, and all he does in response is spout off google suggestions and horrible poems. I guess some people just get off on some strange, strange things.

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

I was told by someone a while ago to just ignore him. I did for quite some time. I guess I will again. But i have decided recently to confront him..since ignoring him did not work. Might as well have a little fun in exchange for the annoyance and distractions.

I just feel a bit for those who came here to lodge a legitimate report and have it subjected to this nonsense. I also feel he takes any what little credibility this site has left.

The thing is...you may ask him why he is talking about engine sludge on a simple report about a cabin filter replacement labor charge..and he will reply with steak dinner poems and googling the Fed and bank death sweeps etc. How do you reason with that?

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

You only have yourself to blame here.

You should always get a detailed estimate BEFORE getting the work done. Then, if there is something on it you don't like, you can challenge it with the service manager, and/or go somewhere else.

YOUR choice.

Sludge and steak dinner poems...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

I guess Karl has the answer...better yet, lets write a poem about steak with sludge sauce and kill two birds with one stone.

Then when ever a customer pays to much for a simple cabin filter replacement, they can sing this steak with sludge sauce poem and see if it gets them a discount.

Or...buy a filter, open the glove box...slide out old filter..discard...slide in new filter, close glove box...fixed. No sing a longs or poetry required.

I know you are anxiously waiting my response. Tech1 explained it. You do not understand that the problem is AIRBAGS and the SRS system..not a problem limited to Toyotas only..Not that this info has ANYTHING to do with this report..which is about a cabin filter replacement..but I will reluctantly appease you AGAIN for the sake argument.

Toyota sells more cars then most. So in all logic..wouldn't it be expected they may have more complaints? So why single them out karl? Did you get suckered by a Toyota dealership and are now on a mission to bring the whole company down?

The answer is easy people don't understand what delta V is required for the deployment of air bags out of the many pages I read maybe 5-10 that I would have to see. You don't understand the delta V that is need deploy airbags do you Karl? Our Ford Focus had 1,500 dollars in damage from a truck backing into it in the parking lot the hood and head light was replaced and the bumper was painted. Should have the air bag deployed?

Googled it Karl...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

Can't seem to find much info..other then some nut case named Karl who is on a ton of blogs telling people to 'google' BALTIMORE SETTLEMENT CALIFORNIA TOYOTA. Is this an old settelment? I can't find much info. When you google it all that comes up is you requesting to google it.

But I would imagine the system worked..would you not agree? Apparently a finance company was discriminating, got sued and had to pay? May explain why so many different races of people drive Toyotas? Did you do any research Karl? How many people from each ethic group got a piece of the settlement? I just can not find any info.

As far as sludge, I have googled sludge to death. Turns out it is 100% preventable if you change your oil regularly, check for the start of it forming when changing oil to catch it early (the sludge can be removed before it causes any damage), and to use a quality oil..a synthetic is best. Toyota will cover certain older models. So if someone has an older model Toyota and has kept records of regular oil changes, by all means google to see if your engine is covered if any damage was caused by sludge.

That seems to be the appropriate measure and good advice.

But what it has to do with this report is beyond me. Seems this post is regarding a coupon that was not honored by the dealership, and an overcharge for waste disposal fee.

The complaint does not mention any problems with financing, race discrimination or sludge. Just another distraction by Karl. No surprise there. I apologize for Karl to the OP for taking away the credibility of the report.

In agreement with tech1

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

As usual, Karl is blowing this way way way way way out of proportion.

The customers only needed to request a written estimate before work was done and agree to it before signing to authorize. There are no shortages of places to have a filter changed or "AC cleaning" and to price shop if that is such a concern.

Granted..this customer states a coupon was not honored...we do not know the reason why. We also know the customer states they were charged 27.00 to open glove box and slide filter in/out...(so why didn't the customer do this themselves if it's that easy?). Would have saved some money for sure.

As far as the hazard fees...I disagree with the dealer to state it is mandated..well yes they have to pay for disposal of hazardous materials, and for wire ties and gloves..but I do not find any law that says this must be charged to the customer..and what percentage. I guess it is better they have a flat rate then to have to break down and charge for every little piece of tape and zip tie and paper towel etc...or to weight the waste after every job, divided into hazardous and non hazardous etc. But $16.32 regardless is high disposal/materials fee for cleaning the AC system (whatever that even is or if it was even done), and replacing a cabin filter. Bottom line is this charge is something they most likely profit from, "mandated" or not.

I think this poster does have a partially reasonable complaint, but is not being 100% forthright with all the info. Karl is off in the land of tin hats, Government conspiracy and economic crash predictions to offer any real useful info regarding this report.

WoW Karl

AUTHOR: Tech1 - (U.S.A.)

Karl,

You really are a loose nut behind a wheel. The Drop in New car sales have not hurt dealers that much because the now make very little off of them(for about ten years now) They make about 60-70% of their profit from the repair work. and a another 10-20% off of used car sales.

The Fee is to cover the cost of contaminated oil disposal coolant disposal tire disposal also to cover the Brake clean, solvents tank fluid, rust penaterant, spray adhesive, and adhesive remover, viruses oil sprays, Zip ties, rubber gloves, and other expenses. Is this fee high yes it is, but the customer failed to see that it is a charge. He agreed on it.

This fee is a charge that most shops have in fact very few do not have them.

CAR DEALERSHIPS HAVE BECOME JUST LIKE MOST OF THE BANKS IN AMERICA. THEY HAVE TO COME UP WITH ALL KINDS OF "FEES" IN ORDER TO GENERATE PROFITS BECAUSE....

AUTHOR: Karl - (USA)

their sales have fallen dramatically in the past few years.

In 2003, 2004, 2005, & 2006, there were around 16 to 17 Million new cars sold each year in the USA. That figure has fallen to around 11 Million. That's a considerable drop in new cars sales.

And consider this: sales of larger vehicles, like SUV's, mini-vans, & trucks, has dropped considerably. Car dealerships are selling more of the smaller, fuel-efficient cars. Those cars are less expensive and have less PROFIT for the dealership.

Car dealerships will try and make up the lost profits by charging as many fees as possible. They'll also try to manipulate customers into having service done on their cars that are not necessary in order to make profits, in my opinion.

Banks are no longer making the money they used to by loaning money to customers. That's why they've adopted a new 'business model' and they are charging FEES unlike ever before.

The auto industry and the banking industry are a reflection of how business in America has changed for the worse.

"Mandated" by whom???

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

Yes...all business have to take out the garbage (dispose of waste). Where is any "mandate" that says any shop "must" charge or are required to charge their customers 8.1% of labor for this fee?

And..if this is the case...why is every customer charged the same hazard fee? Why not charge 8.1% of the labor charge? Maybe my math is off..but according to this report, the customer was charged $16.32. Is this the "up to" amount it should cost for this customers labor charge? $72.00 to clean the AC system (cough, cough gag), $27.00 to open the glove box and replace the cabin air filter (cough, cough gag). Lets do the math...

72 + 16.32 (lets round off to 17) = $89.00. 8.1% of 89= $7.02. So this customer was ripped off according to your last reply.

One shop I work with charges a flat fee of $5.00 for this. And bear in mind..this is California.. land of gestapo n**i regulations for everything..heck I would not be surprised if they taxed the formation of toe jam by weight and volume.

Hazard Fee Mandated

AUTHOR: Michelle - (United States of America)

The Harzard fee that you were charged is because we have to dispose of all fluids and parts removed.  Hazard fees are 8.1% of labor up to $27.50 and it covers the cost of disposing of hazard waste materials.  Every dealership in town will charge you these fees since we are mandated to do that.

Complaint Number: 10351829    Incident Date: August 24, 2010    Date Added to File: August 25, 2010
Description of the Complaint:
2006 Volvo s40 passenger side air bag sensor is malfunctioning. When a passenger is sitting in the passenger seat, the airbag light saying that the airbag is off is often illuminated, but not always. The dealer has told me that they have encountered this problem on several 2006, 2007, and 2008 models. They initially told me that this was normal behavior. They are now investigating since I have raised the safety concern of being in the passenger seat and not having the airbag deploy. This is the third time we have had our car in for this problem. The dealer is working with Volvo to fix this problem, but it seems like there may be a number of defective sensors out there.

There goes the old engine sludge poetry googles...

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

Karl is a nut case. This report is regarding a dealership rip off overcharging for maintenance..No surprise, nothing new..and no matter which Toyota dealer this person buys their next Toyota from..will most likely be ripped off just the same if they bring it to the dealer for repair of routine maintenance.

And many dealers forge signatures, change the numbers around fraudulantly for a loan qualification etc...and they almost all charge the ludicrious fee of 16+ dollars per customer for taking out the garbage.

Best bet is find an honest local mechanic...not a muffler shop..not a oil change place..but a real mechanic.

As far as sludge...any engine could be damaged by it. Use good oil and change it frequently.

As far as sudden acceleration..guess it may be an issue..I don't know..I see more Toyotas on the road then any other make...I know dozens of people who own them..including my parents..and not one report of sudden acceleration. I suggest anyone with this problem learn how to put it in neutral and step on the brake..you will be amazed that the car will stop before crashing into the ocean.

#35 Consumer Comment

Azcust, Before you buy another Toyota make sure to 'Google' this- ENGINE SLUDGE, and go to the consumeraffairs website....

AUTHOR: Karl - (USA)

about 'Toyota Engine Problems' and read all of the engine complaints. Then click on 'Airbags' and read all of those complaints too.

*You can also 'Google' this- MY LEXUS IS DEFECTIVE, and watch the 9 minute 34 second video on the web where a man's wife died when his 2005 Toyota Camry crashed into the ocean. There's also a woman whose Toyota Prius ended up crashing into a Colorado river. I believe there's a couple who stated that their Toyota Highlander suddenly accelerated on a highway when they were on vacation.

*It's always best to do ALL of your research before buying any car, wouldn't you agree?

Thank You
