We signed up at with LearningRX to help our daughter, who has learning disabilities and is classified as such in our district. We made it clear we were specifically looking for substantial improvement in our daughter's short term and long term memory, we were not concerned with her executive functioning, visually processing or any other cognitive issues they claim to improve. We were promised by the owners Monica and Allise that they their program would help her and we signed up for a program with the cost of $10,000.00 (Ten Thousand Dollars).

About 1/2 way through the program, we voiced our disappointment that we were not seeing any progress. They retested her and several of the results were LOWER than the initial test. The program proved to be more anxiety producing and frustrating for our daughter.

On their website they state "Train the Brain. Get smarter. Guaranteed. Well that is not the case. We completed the program and our daughter was retested and the memory issues we originally signed up for were NOT better and we still did not see any improvement. They said their "test" showed an improvement, so they would not refund us and honor their guarantee. They gave us unrealistic expectations and we feel preyed on our desperation as parents searching for ways to improve the quality of our child's life and life skills.

We just came back from a meeting with an attorney and they denied a refund, only offered more training. Our daughter will not return and we have already invested too much time and money into a program that promises a lot and does that deliver the results that are seen in school, life and daily activities. Tests done by the Bergen County School district had to reclassify her and recommended additional support and reflected how just low her memory skills have remained.

LearningRX is a franchise that only goes by their tests that has proven to be skewed to their benefit, thereby finding a loop hole so their guarantee is just a marketing ploy.

We never signed a contract

AUTHOR: CJ - (United States of America)

When we asked about their guarantee in a copy of an email below and the one on their website at the first "sales" meeting, they assured us we would be happy with the results.  We also never signed a contract, so what LearningRX has in their contract is a moot point, nor did we ever see a copy of the contract.

We contacted Tuition Solutions, the company that finances LearningRX loans, to inform them we are in dispute.  Since there is no contract, they also agreed to dispute past and future payments.

We were not offered a prorated refund partway through program or we did not say we wanted to finish the program. We were told we HAD to complete the program if we wanted to discuss a refund.  Does LearningRX have a written copy of this offer?  We do not.

Here is a copy of one of the initial emails from Allise at Short Hills LearningRX in regards to my question about the guaranty

But wouldn't you be interested in improving your daughter's ability to learn?  Tutoring cannot do that.

We guaranty our program.

We have graduates from our program who no longer need an iep, medication or tutoring.

Call me so we can discuss. My son has ADD. I understand your pain. He is in our program and I hope to stop the medication and tutors. I've seen it done.

LearningRx Response to Consumer Complaint

AUTHOR: LearningRx Home Office - (USA)

LearningRx exists to help people think, learn and perform better than they did before. The improvements of our students and the satisfaction of their families is our top priority (in fact, our customer satisfaction rating is exceptional9.2 out of 10and significantly higher than the national average of 7.5). Tens of thousands of clients have gone through our programs with positive outcomes, and on the rare occasion we have a dissatisfied client, we make every effort to remedy the situation.

Such is the case with the family of the student mentioned above.

While we appreciate this parents passion regarding her daughter, a few clarifications must be made:

1. We dont have a money back guarantee.

We cant fail to honor a guarantee we dont give. Our only policy regarding the refund of money is in our contract, where we explain that if you sign up for a program and change your mind within the first week, well give you a full refund. After beginning the second week of the program, you can still stop at any time and we will give you a prorated refund for unused sessions. (By the way, this client was offered a prorated refund partway through the program. She turned it down, deciding instead to finish the program.)

2. Our guarantee says if you dont get good results, well give you additional training for free.

Heres what our guarantee actually says: If, upon completion of a program that lasts from 24 to 32 weeks, there is not at least a three-year gain in one cognitive or reading skill as determined at the initial testing, we will provide, at no additional cost to you, an additional three weeks of training.

This student did much better than the minimum gains, which means she doesnt qualify for additional free training. Nevertheless, because our goal is for every client to walk out the door happy with everything they received, we offered to provide additional training to this family at no cost. They have, however, turned down that offer.

3. We measure improvements accurately and scientifically using a widely adopted, well-respected third-party test.

Contrary to the claim, we do not measure improvements by our own tests, skewed or otherwise. To measure improvements, we actually use the Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Abilities, an independent, third-party test used by psychologists, educators and therapists across the country. By administering this test before our brain training program and again after the program is done, we are able to scientifically and accurately measure changes in brain performance.

Plus, to further ensure the integrity of our results, the exercises our trainers use to strengthen brain skills are different than the exercises used by Woodcock-Johnson to measure brain skills. In other words, when our students score higher after brain training, its not because theyve been practicing the test. Its because their brains are literally performing faster and better.

4. This students tests showed solid gains in all seven of the brains core skills.

Our brain trainers work one-on-one with clients to strengthen the seven underlying brain skills that make up IQ and determine how well we think, read, learn, reason, remember and pay attention.

One of the areas in which this student saw solid improvement was memory (she literally started the program with her memory performing at one age, and finished with the memory skills of someone three years older!). In fact, she achieved more than a three-year-gain in four out of the seven skills, and gains in all seven.

We are very proud of what this student accomplished in our program.

5. Doing the assigned home training is really important.

If this students scores did not meet the expectations of her family, theres another factor that must be considered:

The key to getting the best results with LearningRx programs is consistency in training. Altering how the program is administered (for example, reducing the number of sessions per week, or neglecting to do the required home assignments) will, understandably, impact the results and expectations of the program.

Unfortunately, this family struggled to complete their portion of the program. This 24-week program took more than a year to complete because of inconsistent attendance at training sessions, and out of 48 hours of required digital-training home assignments, less than 15 hours were completed.

Every day at LearningRx we help thousands of people overcome lifelong learning struggles. On a corporate, and even personal, level (after all, were parents, too!) it saddens us to see any child struggle with learning difficulties. We are sympathetic to this familys situation and have made sincere and ongoing efforts to help this family. We wish them well and hope only the best for their daughter.
