Avoid the frustration!! I began my father's claim for a brief hospital stay back in June 2009. As of March 2010, the company has gone out of its way to deny the claim. Let me be clear, what they doing is perfectly legal!! They are acting within their guidelines. They continue to request more and more medical records. I have provided medical records from the entire hospital stay, the doctor's who took care of him during the stay, etc... Each time they request a record, they get the information, then request more information. I am approaching a year since since i started this claim. Today (3/01/2010), I recieved a new request wanting doctor's records from 2007 through 2008. I have put more hours into this than the $500 claim is worth.
I am writing to warn other veterans to avoid these policies. They are not worth your time to collect the benefits and you will be out your premiums. My father is lucky he has someone to help him stay on top of this but not all of you will be so fortunate. Avoid the costs and headaches this insurnace company burdens you with. It sounds good up front, but you would be better taking the premiums and putting it into a savings account and access the money when you need it most. Seeing my father's frustration only wanted me to warn others to avoid this problem.

I have found my investment in LIT to be a VERY valuable addition to my overall health insurance plans, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND the plan to EVERYONE who may even remotely envision the need for hospitalization in their future.
As for the original complainant, I am truly sorry to hear of your problem with LIT subsequent to your Dad's hospitalization and suspect that it may have to do with the "look back" period for pre-existing conditions, if your Dad had the policy less than a year. If you envision, God forbid, that your Dad will have to endure subsequent hospitalization(s) in the future, my advice would be to work out the initial problems with LIT and continue the policy. In my experience, I just cannot think of any program that is more worthwhile and a better investment than the LIT.
GOOD LUCK!

It is not possible to determine from this complaint why there was a delay on this claim. It sounds like this is the LIT Hospital Indemnity Plan. The reason medical records may have been requested in this case is because the coverage requires an investigation into whether or not there is a pre-existing condition. In the case of this plan, there is a waiting period before pre-existing conditions may be covered. All claims for newly insured members are handled this way according to the contract. This provision is clearly disclosed when a member signs up for coverage. It is not hidden in any way. We regret that there appears to have been a misunderstanding in this case. The Legionnaire Insurance Trust has provided over $500 million of benefits to Legionnaires over the course of its over 40 year existence. That would tend to underscore its value to thousands of Legionnaires.
