I signed up for Lexington Law's Credit Repair service after learning of an erroneous collection that appeared on my credit report. I use the Credit Karma app to monitor my credit and watched my FICO score drop from 754 to 702 the day the erroneous medical collection appeared. Even though I disputed the claim, the collector refused to accommodate me, so I paid the erroneous charge... The derogatory item remained on my report, so I hired Lexington Law to help for a monthly fee of $99.95. Lexington Law told me that the fee would not be charged until letters were sent on my behalf (I was legitamarely charged $99.95 about 5 days after my initial contact with the firm).
A couple of days later, I received notification that the collection was showing as "paid" and had been removed from my report. My credit score went right back up to 754 and the collection disappeared. (Incidentally, I don't believe Lexington Law prompted the removal of the erroneous derogatory item; however, I was happy to have them backing me up with their letters).
When I called Lexington to cancel, (Well before my 2nd $99.95 charge), I was told that they planned on billing me again- I clarified that I did not want another month of service. The rep I spoke with put me in touch with a paralegal supervisor who advised me that payment was made in arrears and that the next payment was to cover my first month of service! I protested that my initial payment couldn't have been made in arrears, because work couldn't have been done prior to my hiring the firm! She stammered fir a moment and decided to call my initial payment a "set up fee". (Which is not what I was advised up front- I was told that Lexington did not have a set up fee, because they weren't allowed to bill me until work was done on my behalf.
Regardless, this is an obvious misrepresentation. It's is a blatant effort to defraud consumers- otherwise, why wouldn't they make an effort to be upfront about their fees?! it is obvious in retrospect that my initial rep was aware of the scam and lied in order to cover it up! When I tried to contact him, I was told that he was no longer at the firm.
Lexington Law is scheduled to steal $99.95 from me on June 8, 2014. hopefully their conscience hits them before they rob me, but if they do, I intend to fight back.
