The corporate office passes everything to the local office. I, at one time agreed to settle this dispute if Liberty Tax would pay the additional taxes. Liberty Tax has refused to pay any amount. What angered me the most is how I was treated by the current franchise holder.
I see that Liberty Tax has lots of similar complaints regarding returns with errors that later result in IRS penalties. I hope that I prevent others from facing a similar situation in the future.

Search Tips- You don't give any details as to the reason for the error, but if they miscalculated the tax then they would be responsible for the PENALTIES and INTEREST that the IRS assessed you. They like most tax preparation companies have an Accuracy Guarantee this. However, it doesn't get you out of paying the additional tax as you would have owed that anyways.
Now, if they only filled the tax based on what you gave them and it was something you left out or gave them misinformation then unfortunately you would be at fault and responsible for everything.
If they won't pay you may want to think about filing a suit against them. Depending on how much the penalties make up of the $9000 you may be able to do this in Small Claims.
