I am 67 years old and have been suffering serious health problems (COPD and Sleep Apnea) which lead to anxiety and depression. I have seeked help from NAMI, doctors, phone help lines, chat rooms and friends. When I saw an infomercial on TV from the Midwest Center for Anxiety, it sounded hopeful so I ordered it. The TV program sets you up to get a set of DVD's for $14.95 but the package that arrives has many more audio tapes. You also get a bill for 8 payments of $64.94, over $500.00. There is supposed to be a workbook and some cards. I did not get these. I also got a package of vitamins and minerals and a bill for a regular supply of these pills. This made me suspicious since there was no mention of this in the infomercial that I remember.

As I listened to the tapes I learned they are really just Lucinda Bassett whinnying about her various past or present anxiety problems. I think this woman is seriously ill and hope she got or is getting professional help. I called the center and they at least canceled the pills. I tried to return the package when I realized the true cost which of course they don't mention on TV. They will not cancel the course but did offer to reduce the cost to 8 payments of $30.00. Also I signed up for counseling at a rate of $70 dollars a session. After listening to one counselor I learned they are just amateurs with limited training and decided to cancel the sessions. I also noticed they were charging my credit card every 2 weeks for $70. By the way they started charging my credit card immediately. When I call the center I get gruff treatment. They give one this tone that you must do what they say.

The gal you call for counseling says they require you complete the course, their rule. The gal that handles returns will not give a return authorization number. It seems they always take messages and call back who they want to talk to. People with anxiety disorders are vulnerable and may clutch at any solution, Even if half awake at three in the morning from sleep apnea. They may even be elderly. Predatory sales programs are not what they need. It could even exacerbate the problem with another disappointment and new bills which they may not be able to pay. Overall I really feel this program is a farce that takes advantage of people who need help and are vulnerable and their pocket books get gouged for questionable help. They should be ashamed of themselves. I am going to report this to a great consumer reporter I know, the Better Business Bureau NAMI and maybe get a lawyer. These people need to be exposed.

While I cannot vouch for the return policy or customer service of this company because we did not attempt to return anything, I can say that the $400 primary program seemed to cure my 22 year old daughter of her near suicidal depression.  After 18+ months of weekly counseling sessions and psychiatric care, and going from one prescription anti-depressant to another, all of which only served to change her symptoms, not cure anything, within 4 months of starting this 'Midwest' program my daughter regained her happy personality.
