Yes, it's best to avoid them

AUTHOR: EF.MARS - (United States of America)

Well, folks.... I was wrong.  I wont post my name and admit to hiding behind a "screenname" but only out of embarassment and fear of legal action from MARS (or should I say MORE legal action).

I have been a Mars operator for many years now.  Over time, my experience has gotten worse and worse and worse.  Of course, the current economy doesn't help matters any as things are slow everywhere.

HOWEVER, don't buy into the promises this company makes.  Well over a quarter of their remaining franchisees have filed suit against them, and I am adding my name to the pile. The owners claim a strong religious upbringing.  Well, that may be but they don't ACT it.  Lies, deceit, misrepresentation, bad credit lines, unfullfilled orders, no anwers to phone calls and a record number of job slashed at their headquarters are just the beginning.

To make sure you all realize I'm not someone who's just bitter about a failed business venture, let me get specific for you.

Mars requires you to order ALL of your supplies from ONLY THEM.  However, because they've defaulted on their vendors all over the US, your orders will be placed on back order status indefinately.  I have unfilled orders from 3 months ago.

Mars requires you to use their accounting system.  This system is poor, disorgainized and seems to be run by a different person every week.  While you might think you are current and paid up, they'll send you an invoice for tens of thousands of dollars and threaten to sue you if you don't pay.

Mars will sell as many franchises as they can in as many markets.  They claim existing operators have protected "accounts" but not "territories".  Open up your business and then don't be suprised to see 3 more guys (suckers?) just like you, trying to earn a buck in your back yard.

12% of your GROSS income goes back to MARS, this is in addition to your $50,000 purchase price and doesn't include your "renewal fee" you are required o pay every 5 years..... at over $6000 each time.  While they are quick to claim that some of that 12% will be applied to your account in credits to get "free supplies", don't count on it.  The credits disappear and the supplies never come.  They will also tell you that part of your 12% payout will go into an advertising fund..... except for some Help Wanted Ad, have YOU ever heard of Mars?  Didn't think so.  How brilliant to have your franchisees pay for your own ads to sell more franchises to other suckers.

Mars claims they'll give you "hands on" training for 2 weeks in their "school".  Be prepared to spend 2 weeks learning one to three new skills per day.  Skills that take years to perfect.  You'll learn how to repaint a bumper.  But you learn this in 3 hours.  Don't expect to fly home and be ready to start painting $30,000-40,000 cars.  You soon discover when it's time to paint one on your own, you have no idea what you are doing.

Mars will not assit you (or warn you) of environmental issues regarding the work you do.  While it seems like a neat idea to paint cars outside, your state's EPA laws will have you shut down fast.  Sure, you can concentrate on doing touch up work or pinstriping or even interior repairs but at $20 a job, how many of these will you need to do to survive on, nevermind paying back your $50,000 loan and still be able to eat.  Oh, did I mention he insurance you'll need too?  No?  Well, neither will Mars.  Call your insurance company and find out how much a million dollar liability policy for a sole proprietorship costs.  Make sure you are sitting down when you do.

Am I jaded?  Yes.  Moreover, I'm embarrassed. I spent years telling people what a great opportunity this is.  How the owners are deeply religious and how they care about their employees.  Try flying that statement past the 30+ people who were axed from the company last year before Christmas.  Tell that to the many people who bought these franchise opportunites over the years and then went bankrupt while the Texas millionares kept on laughing and selling more.

I'm embarrassed for borrowing tens of thousands of dollars to buy into this scam and I'm ashamed that I've told friends, family and other prospective owners out there that this was a good idea.

Don't walk, run away from this "opportunity".  Sure, there are some happy owners out there.  I was one of them.  But the select few happy guys, such as Mr. Owens, have a nice thing going with Jayson Jones and David Jones and they can't/won't see what these guys are really like.  Over time, well over 100 of us have seen this company for what it really is.  It's a business that sells businesses and nothing more.  No support, no advice, no supplies and no one answering the phones..... unless you want to buy another franchise from them.

Feel free to contact me anytime at [email protected]    I'll tell you what you NEED to hear, not what they WANT you to hear.
