I have had MBNA since 1999. Recently I decided to take advantage of their balance transfer offer. When I called to make the transfer, the scam started. I called before the change in their balance transfer fee, yet I was charged 3% balance transfer!!! I contacted the OCC office & BofA changed the fee to what it should have been ($75) & refunded the reset of the money. I contacted them for extra finance charges in regard to this issue (again through OCC) & BofA refunded thoes charges. Until Nov. of 08...my acct. had due date of 11/27/08, I went on line to make payment on 11/26/08 and I couldn't log into the accout. I called the customer service & I was told the technical department was closed and my payment would be considered late. I had just finished making payment on 2 other credit cards with the due date of 11/27/08 & my payment were not late!!! I asked to speak to manager & I was told that someone will call me within 48 hrs.!! Unbelievable!!! I hung up with that rap. (Sandy Olivas) & I called back & spoke to Nicky. She told me that even she has problem loging into her acct., but I can make payment over the phone & assured me I should not get late fees since she is making note on my acct. & she transfered me to that line. When I went through the process, it said that my payment will be posted on 12/1/08 and didn't give me any option to change that date. I had no choice to confirm that & I called back on 11/28/08 to speak to a manager. I spoke to Mr. Colbank whom didn't care what so ever about my issue. Now my promotional rate is changed to 16.99 instead of 2.99 just because BofA didn't allow me to make my payment on time. From get go they tried to rip me off !!! Many credit cards are now allowing users to make payments online. Customers mistakenly assume that the website will always be available. This is not always the case because it is not in the cards interest that you pay your bill on time. Also, phoning in a payment costs you extra.
I was considering borrowing money from credit cards that offered 1 year low rates and then investing in a higher rate CD and pocketing the difference. I decided not to because you have no assurance with a credit card that the teaser rate will not change.
There are so many things can cause them to yank the teaser rate right out from under you and leave you twisting in the wind. The best way to prevent the rate from increasing because of late payment for those with low teaser rates is to go to the website as soon as you get the credit card and schedule recurring online automatic payments of the minimum to be paid each month on the due date.
For those with regular rates, the best way to beat the credit card companies at their own game is to get a chase cash reward credit card and schedule recurring automatic payment of the full amount due monthly. This way you'll make a profit on your credit card, unheard of for most people.
