MERCHANTS CREDIT GUIDE COMPANY Debt Colletor, demanded payment on a very old account that I thought had resurfaced but did not Chicago Illinois

I had a credit card from years ago that had fallen off of my credit report. This company contacted me demanded payment on the account, and I started to pay them, thinking that the debt had resurfaced and wanting to protect my good credit standing. Come to find out, this comapany is a crooked company and has many, many claims against them from people just like me. What they do is buy invalid, nonexistent accounts probably for pennies and then try to target the old account holders and imtimidate them into paying off their nonexistent debts. Many people like myself do not know our rights, and just want to make them go away. I was unfortunate and started to pay these people. Now I look oline and hundreds of people are being scammed by this company. This company is know where on my credit report and I am one of the many people who were targeted, but just obviously the only one dumb enough to give them money. I need any advice I can get. Stay away from this company, they are fraudulent and are crooks.
