I've been seeing many stories like mine on the internet: I moved from Maryland in 1998, have never been uninsured, sold a car shortly after I moved, don't have any idea if I even have records dating back that far, and now, fourteen years later, get a bill from the Maryland MVA for $5356.26.
My now husband also moved from Maryland in 1999 and he too started receiving similarly huge bills just recently. The first notice was almost unreadable. I just got a second one that's clear and has a payment envelope.
So far we've ignored these notices. Isn't there a legal limit for bill collecting? If I had received it 13 years ago I would have been able to take care of it easily. Waiting 14 years? Give me a break! This feels like a scam.

No, it is DEF a scam. You think wrong if you think that it is because they can't find you because of not leaving a forwarding address. That was done by us 14 years ago. Not to mention that our new drivers licences were from Va. at the time and were our social security numbers. Please...if they wanted to find you then, they would have. We not only left a forwarding address but called the DMV as soon as we moved, asked if we could send both licenses back together in a bubble wrapped envelope. The woman then was very nice and stated that would be fine.
It was done.
We took one off the road because it was dead and sold it for parts and the other we did a voluntary repossession thing because things were rough and we were starting over. We used a relatives car for quite some time until we got jobs and got in the swing of things enough to get another vehicle and such. This is nothing but a bad joke, a way to get more money from the American people to give us the shaft because they can.
To everyone that has had this done, the same way...where it has been years. I have spoken to my insurance, to lawyers and everyone else I can get my hands on about it and nothing goes back that far to help. That is why they waited so long, to nail everyone that don't keep records for 14 years. It is an atrocity. The more the state, government and political creatures in Washington get away with, the more we will see things get more and more rediculous. We are paying for their hefty salaries, their insurance that covers everything even after they aren't even in their jobs any longer etc... while we fight to survive and they call everything good now. The economy, unemployment etc. Sure it is great for them, let them try to live like us and get insane things like this happen. After 14 years they took it from our taxes this year which were for my sons college fund so they won anyway. God bless the USA.

having had friends who had to go through this, its not a scam. I dont think it will go away either on its own. From what I understand about maryland MVA these bills rack up when people move and dont properly close their accounts. I have a friend with a bill over 3000$ because he did not turn in his license plate when he moved and got rid of a car. If you didnt turn in the license plate when you moved, the state considers you to still have the vehicle. Thus the insurance lapses on the vehicle and you start racking up fines. My guess as to why it took so long to find you is that you did not leave the state with any sort of forwarding address when you moved. What you need to do, is provide proof to them that you moved and sold the car. If you can prove this, they will make the fines go away. I also dont think this falls under the statute of limitations for bill collecting since this is a government fine and not a bill.
