 I made a payment to Macy's for charges of $109.39 per check #989 on July 4, 2013 with the payment due date of 7/9/13.  My bank account showed that check clearning on 7/8/13.  On August 7, 2013 I received a paper bill stating that I owed $136.61 which included a late fee of $25.00. 

I contacted Macy's per chat line (Michael D.) and was informed that I needed to make my payment 7 to 10 days before the payment due date in order to insure time for business process.  I was informed after the chat that I would not be charged the late fee because I was a good consumer. 

I do not feel that I should have been charged a late fee at all, spend extra time trying to resolve the issue or be concerned about having any  negative effect on my credit rating.

 There are several fundamental things wrong with your report which brings the entire thing into question as if there isn't more to the story.

1. The most obvious is your statement that says you received your paper statement on August 7th.  You wrote the report on August 6th...a day before you say you got your statement.

2.  You say your payment was due on 7/9/2013.  Per Federal Law your credit card bill is due on the same day every month.  This means that it would also be due on 8/9/2013.  However, the law also states that it must be sent out 21 days in advance.  Which means that for you, you should have received your next statement around the middle of July...not right before it was due.

Now onto the rest.  You may have written the check on July 4th, but that is a FEDERAL holiday and all Post Offices and banks are closed.  So the earliest it would have gone out is July 5th, when you include the weekend you gave it 3 business days.  Which yes is way too short, and you are very lucky it was processed when it was..if that is in fact the correct date.

You also did not say what the statement says about the the date your payment posted.  If they posted it after it cleared your bank and before the due date then yes you have a valid complaint...BUT this is very doubtful just based on the rest of your report.

What most likely happened is that you mis-read the dates on your statement and were in fact late.  You should re-read your statements and verify the DUE DATE.  Of course if you have any questions..go ahead and post a copy of your statements(with your personal info blacked out) and people may be able to get a better grip on what actually happened.  Because unless you have something else right now it does not seem like a problem with Macy's.
