I purchased a Magellan GPS brand new at Costco only to discover the maps were not even reasonably recent. For example, a fairly major DC suburban town that has existed since 1995 is not recognized at all by the system 13 years later. Shopping plazas and roads that have been built for years are not on the system.

Since I could have no confidence using a system that is so poorly outdated in unfamiliar territory, I tried to get help from Magellan. I would have accepted a free updated map as a remedy, even though I didn't believe it was fair to have a customer have to go through updating a brand new device. My emails to Magellan were alternately ignored or answered with strange and inaccurate rewording of my problem. For example, when I explained the maps were outdated and asked how it could be remedied, one response I got said, "So, if I understand your problem, you cannot find your neighborhood on the system. Please give us your address so we can add it to the system." I had never mentioned my own neighborhood and certainly adding it to their maps wouldn't resolve my problem of outdated maps at all.

I googled "Magellan" and "outdated maps" and found many similar complaints about the maps and poor customer service. I came to believe the company must be well aware of the problem but had chosen not to handle it properly. The typical response was to offer to sell the customer more current maps. I explained that I should not have to buy updates to a device that was brand new. I accept that all maps for GPS systems may not be be up to the minute since the devices could sit on shelves for a few weeks or months, but I don't believe they should be years out of date. I believe if they are years out of date, then Magellan should provide free updates.

Magellan customer service stopped responding to my emails. I called Costco and found they had received similar complaints about Magellan devices. Costco took back my device without question and processed me a full refund. My advice: never buy a product made by Magellan. In my opinion, they are knowingly selling outdated devices, and are then knowingly deflecting the legitimate complaints rather than resolving them.

Outdated maps as part of their business model

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, April 05, 2012

I  bought  a GPS with an outdated  map  as  well.  It  came  with  a  60  day  free  update  and  I  called  them  to  find  out  which  version  was  current.   I   did  not  want  to  update  it to an older version  and  then,  a  week  later  the  new  version  would  be  available.

When  I  called  in  January 2012  they  told  me  "the  current  version is  V.45"   when  I  downloaded  their  update  manager  it  was  only  showing  V.43  and  I  decided  not  to  download  something  that  might  be  updated  a  week  or  two  weeks  later.   When  I  called  them  again  to  find  out  why  I  was not  able  to  download V.45  I  was  told  to  wait  and  not  to  worry  about  the  60  days.   they  could  not  tell me  when  the  V.45  would be  available  for my  unit  but  it  sounded  like they  were working  on it,  so  i  waited  and  followed  up  several  times.   I  also  sent  them  several  emails,  always  with the  same  response  "We  don't  know" today,  on  April, 05   the  answer  was  quite  different:   V.45  would  not  be  available  for  my  unit  in the  nearest   future.   Obviously  the  latest   map  version  is  reserved  for  only  2 or  3  high end  models.

Now,  suddenly,  I  was  also  advised  that  I  would  have  to pay  for  V.43 which  was  showing up  as  a  free  download  while I  was  waiting for  V.45  and  when  I  mentioned  to  their  lady  in  their   call  center  in the Philippines  that  I  was  advised  not  to  worry  about  the 60  days,  it  was  "Nobody  told  you  that..."

To  me  it  appears  that  outdated  maps  are  part  of their  business  model,  probably  they are  not  making  any  money  on the  hardware  and   they  try  to  boost  their  profits  by  selling  expensive  updates  to the  customer.   Probably  they  sell   units  with  outdated  maps  on  purpose  and  don't  provide  the  latest  map  versions  with the idea  in mind  that  the  consumer  will  sooner  or  later  buy  one  of  their newer   maps  when  he  finds  out  that  Arizona  still  belongs  to  Mexico,  while  on  I-10....
