I'll be brief. MagicJack is now charging extra to call anywhere in Oklahoma's area code 580. Although they offer MJ service to area code 580, they try to extract a fee per minute to call this area code from other locations within the United States. When challenged to defend their claim of offering free long distance calls when it is absolutley NOT free, they gleefully hid behind the terms of their EULA that states, "We may require prepaid purchase and/or we may charge you for calls to conference lines, platforms and certain non-ILEC area calls, or any call wherein we incur a cost from another carrier." Now, that seems to allow them unlimited opportunity to charge for every call to every exchange.
This change from "free calls" to charging for every call to certain area codes is a dramatic shift in policy and ethics. I believe this company should defend what appears to me to be a "bait and switch" policy in court as a defendant to a class action suit on behalf of defrauded customers.
There's no FREE calls to area code 580 and others, so I will not recommend MagicJack to anyone.
Is anyone having the same problems with calls that used to go through with no trouble now being blocked unless you pay extra per minute for "free calls"?

If you want someone to blame, blame the FCC. This is a problem affecting the whole telecom industry -- the FCC allows certain carriers in small rural areas to charge absolutely exorbitant fees for completing calls to their customers. Most telecom companies simply pass on the extra cost to all of their customers. Magicjack, being free, doesn't exactly have this option, so they pass on the cost to you. If you don't like this, write the FCC and tell them to fix this problem. Just FYI, most other free and low-cost services (like Google Voice) also block calls to these numbers.

I thought you might like to know how much their "FREE calls within the USA" number actually costs PER minute and PER hour! After being forced by MJ's policy of "accept it or leave" to purchase $10 in prepaid calling time, I wanted to know the actual rate I would be required to pay for a call to Enid, Oklahoma in area code 580. Based on MJ's own announcement when placing a call to AC 580, $10 buys only 226 minutes, which is roughly 4.4247 cents per minute. $ 2.65 per hour is a LONG way from free, wouldn't you agree? These inconvenient facts are omitted from their website, possibly becasue they are......well, inconvenient. I don't know why they can't be completely honest and tell the prospective customer that although it will cost 3 cents to call CHINA, it will cost almost 150% more (4.4247 cents) to call OKLAHOMA. "Free", indeed, so buyer beware!
I believe that others like to know of similar charges to something touted as free, so please provide updates!
