Its YOUR responsibility to cancel. So do the next phase, Send them a written request for FINAL cancelation. If there is a penalty ( financially), then ask what that amount is, then pay it and be done with this business.
Did you even keep your contract? Do they have a copy on file? Some things in contracts are not enforceable under the state laws, so its up to you to GET informed.
Do the adult thing and manage this cancelation thru written form.

You're kidding, right? Are you seriously complaining that you signed a contract without reading it and expected that someone else should read it to you? It's a contract. It binds you to the terms that are right there in black and white. It is not anyone's job (except maybe your lawyer's) to tell you what you're agreeing to. Even if some salesperson does give you their interpretation of the contract, it doesn't matter. What's on the paper is still what you are bound to.
If you continue in the habit of signing things that you don't agree with, life may prove to be a disappointment for you.
