I purchased an Acer Aspire 5733 notebook which was preinstalled with McAfee Internet Security Suite trial. I decided to take advantage of the trial since it came preinstalled on my laptop. Upon expiration of the trial, I decided not to subscribe and purchase the software since I wasn't completely satisfied with the anti-virus software, and I'd wish to purchase and use one that I felt performed more satisfactorily. I tried to install Kaspersky Internet Suite which I'd purchased, but I was unable to install the anti-virus software onto my computer because it is incompatible with McAfee, and I was given a response to uninstall McAfee first.

I have been unsuccessful at my attempts to uninstall McAfee Internet Security Suite from my computer. The software is evidently hidden since it does not show up in my list of programs in the control panel. I contacted McAfee support and was told to try and delete McAfee from the program files folder in my computer. This was unsuccessful as well, and I was given a message that access is denied and I need permission to remove the software. My computer is currently unprotected and vulnerable to a host of malware and viruses since I haven't subscribed to McAfee and I'm unable to install an alternate antivirus software due to not being able to remove McAfee. My Windows firewall has been disabled and the inactive McAfee software has taken over it as well.

The tech from McAfee told me he could remove the software if I gave him remote access to my computer which is something I declined since I didn't feel comfortable giving someone complete access to my computer and personal files. I've never had software that I was unable to remove and needed permission to remove from my computer, and why do I have to give someone remote access to my computer in order to remove the software? This particular behavior seems suspicious and fraudulent.

I purchased the computer so I should have control over what programs I want and don't want installed on it. I feel McAfee has devised a clever way to force consumers into purchasing their anti-virus software by not allowing them to remove it or install a different anti-virus software. I'll reiterate, I cannot use any other anti-virus software on my laptop since McAfee is still installed, and I cannot remove it. Every other anti-virus software that I have used: Norton, AVG, Kaspersky e.g. I've been able to remove from my computer if I decided I no longer wanted it. This should be the same with McAfee.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

McAfee has hidden files

AUTHOR: SJ - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, December 31, 2012
Dear Madam/Sir:

I had McAfee on one of my computers.  It came with the trial, but long before I decided to get rid of it.  I went to the ADD/REMOVE program section to remove it.  The thing about McAfee is that has hidden files which take up a lot of time to remove.  It took me 3 days, 8 hours a days to pick them out of the brains of the computer.  If you are not skilled in this, I would take it to someone who can do it faster, without losing what you have on your computer.

I don't understand why McAfee and Nortons, have to make it so difficult to remove their programs.  I think they figure you will get tired and keep their software.  Those two I mentioned are the worse for Anti Virus and keeping viruses off of your computer.  I now have a free version I have used for 5 years, it updates itself and is rated the top AntiVirus program.  With McAfee and Nortons I keep getting Trojan horses which is it suppose to catch, but didn't.  It is NOT AVG,  it is not AVG.  When you are getting near the renewal date with Nortons and McAFee, if it is 2 months before, and you don't renewal, sometimes it will wiped out your whole computer, to where you have to reload windows.  That happened with me on another computer where I had Nortons.

Good luck, but you need someone who can pick those files out for you.
