I am in the process of filing a real complaint with the BBB against this McCartys auto shop in Owensboro, KY, in addition to writing this negative review about their shoddy service, to hopefully warn other people not to go to them for help with their cars and trucks. The fact they continue to display the BBB sign in their establishment and maintain an A+ rating on their website is a total joke. I really believe that this shop needs to get shut down for the way they do business, which is horrible, and I am absolutely disgusted with their attitude and how they treat people, especially after they have made a silly mistake and just refuse to own up to it and admit they were wrong, and refuse to do the right thing to actually fix the problem. This is what happened to us:
My sisters car broke down on her in the middle of the road when she was driving home from work in Owensboro a few nights ago. [continued below]....
..... We live in Madisonville, which is over 40 miles away, and I had to drive there in my truck to give her a ride home after she had McCartys come out and tow her car to their shop to be repaired. The car had just suddenly died on her in the middle of the road while she was driving it and she wasnt able to restart it because the battery was completely drained so it had to be a bad alternator failing to recharge the battery, and she even told them that right off the bat. But instead of using common sense, they just decided to ignore what she said and do whatever they want to her car without letting her know what was going on. She didnt get any phone calls from them at all the next day while they had her car to let her know what was wrong with it or what they were doing to fix it. She didnt find out until after the fact that they decided to say it was just a bad battery and they had gone ahead and installed a new one without her knowledge or consent, plus they overcharged her for the part (over $100 for a 4-cylinder car battery). Then, after she finally got a hold of them on the phone, they said they were done with it and she could come and get the car. She thought it was weird that they only installed a new battery when she really knew it was the alternator, but she decided to be nice about it and let them be the experts and trust them on it instead of arguing about it. Big mistake!
She called the shop way ahead of time before we left Madisonville and said when she was going to be there, and she was told by whoever answered the phone that that was fine. So after getting off work in Marion, which is 80 miles from Owensboro, I spent more gas money and drove her back to this auto shop so she could pick up her car and be able to drive herself to work the next day. But half way there when we stopped for gas, she tried calling them again only to find out that everyone at the shop had already left for the day, and there was no one there to take her money and give her her keys. So she had to get a hold of the owner himself at his house and make him get out there and open that shop back up so she could get her car back like she was supposed to that night. The bill was almost $200 with the towing charge plus the abnormally high price they charged her for the battery they put in, but we paid it and she got her car back.
Well, it made it home that night and got her back to work the next day, but once again, on her way home from work the very next night the car broke down again in almost the exact same spot as the first time, and with the exact same symptoms the engine died because the battery was dead since the alternator wasnt charging it, and once it ran out there was nothing left to supply any current to the spark plugs to keep the motor running, or even get it started back up again, and none of the other electrical devices in the car worked either at that point. So she called McCartys right back again and told them what happened, that it was the exact same thing as before, and reminded them of how she had thought it was the alternator in the first place. They told her they had checked the alternator and didnt find any problems with it, although they had noted that it would probably need replaced in the near futurewhich doesnt make any sense. How would they know it was going to need replaced pretty soon if they couldnt find any problems with it while they were checking it?? And they wanted to come out and tow her again so they could charge her more money for that, plus charge another $500 to install a new alternator, even though we had already paid them $200 for nothing, and they werent going to refund anything. In fact, they even tried to tell her that if it was the alternator this time, that it had just gone out, because it wasnt bad before, and she still needed to keep the new battery in there or it wouldnt work. Which is total BS!
And they are liars! There is no way they could have actually checked the alternator without finding anything wrong with it, if they did it right, since that really was the whole problem. We have both checked with several other mechanics on this, and they all say the exact same thing every time we tell someone who knows anything about cars what happened to her car there is no possible way it could be a bad battery, it has to be the alternator in that kind of situation that has gone bad. But when she tried to explain that to the service manager at McCartys, whose name is Russell Palmer, he was extremely rude and patronizing to her and just totally blew her off, insulting her intelligence and claiming that they had proof they checked the alternator just because it was written down on a piece of paper that said so, by the person who supposedly checked it and said there was nothing wrong with it. And when she accused him of trying to rip her off, he actually had the nerve to point at the BBB sign they have up in their shop as proof that they didnt rip off ladies has he put it. Only he was being really sarcastic about it.
So, after hearing about this, I called the shop myself and demanded to speak with the manger, and after being left on hold for almost 10 minutes, Russell Palmer finally picked up, and I let him know that he was in fact going to get reported to the BBB for violating their policies, and I told him I was absolutely disgusted with his behavior for the way he had treated my sister and that his whole shop just needed to be shut down. And he said, very sarcastically, that that was just fine with him, and then he hung up on me. I dont think he believed that I would go through with filing the report, or maybe he really doesnt care. But unlike some people, I actually keep my word, and I am going through with filing the report just like I said I would. Its about time someone did, too. Because, come to find out, my sister isnt the first one to get ripped off by these people, and they apparently do have a pretty horrible reputation around town whenever their name is brought up. If only we had known that in the beginning, though, it could have saved us a ton of time, money, and grief. Because now this stupid McCartys auto shop has $200 of our money and they didnt do anything to help us for it, just totally wasted our time, ripped us off, and were rude to both of us on top of it when we tried to get them to make things right after they clearly screwed up a really simple job.
Anyway, after spending another $30 on a battery charger from Walmart to recharge her dead battery ourselves, we finally managed, just barely, to get her car to the auto shop all the way in Evansville, IN, where she originally bought it, and they put in a brand new alternator for $200. She had to miss work for it, though, to get the car up there and wait for them to fix it. But now it works just fine, because the battery is finally staying charged up like its supposed to, which it wasnt doing before, even after a new battery was put in. Furthermore, the mechanic at that shop also reiterated to her that the alternator had to have been bad all along, and it was never the battery itself that was bad, just like she thought so in the first place, based on how the car was breaking down in mid transit.
So basically, the people at McCartys are either just totally incompetent at diagnosing really obvious, simple problems with motor vehicles that even novices can figure out, or they are deliberately trying to rip people off by lying to them because they think they're smarter than everyone else and can get away with it. Either way, they cant be allowed to get away with abusing people like they are trying to do, and the BBB better keep to its word and step in on this if they value their reputation in this area. At the very least, this establishment's BBB accreditation needs to be revoked!
The official name of the business in question is "McCarty's Pro Towing & Recovery", located at 927 Crabtree Avenue, in Owensboro, Kentucky. Their local phone number is 270-683-1118, their toll-free number is 1-888-462-2278, and their website address is www.mccartysprotowing.com. I have already filed my complaint against them on the Better Business Bureau website and I have emailed McCarty's using the contact form on their website to let them know that, too. Hopefully they will have to face some repercussions for what they have done. These people have got to learn that they are not going to be allowed to get away with this kind of garbage and still maintain their BBB accreditation like nothing is wrong.
