For Years I have been going the Mcdonalds near my home almost 5 times a week in the morning to grab my morning large coffee and I would order the number 4 Breakfast combo which was the Breakfast Burritos.

One morning I did not use my usual Mcdonalds by my house I deceided to use the one closer to my workplace about 13 kilometres away. I was shocked. My order was $1.20 CHEAPER at the McDonalds by my workplace. The SAME order. I asked why and I sent a complaint with my scanned receipts proving the price difference to McDonalds.

The manager of my McDonalds on 44 Bristol Rd East replied to me via email her exact words:" Franchise locations and Corporate locations all have different prices across Ontario.  Owner Operators of a Franchise location have the right to price items as they see fit and reasonable.  I'm sorry you find this location to be "over-priced". [continued below]....

.....

The point is that my total at my workplace Mcdonald's location for my breadkfast was $5.50 and the price at the Bristol Road location was $6.70 a difference of $1.20. We are not talking a small percentage difference here. This is a 20% increase in price for the SAME THING!! I have figured out that over a year I have OVERPAID to a total of over $400 for just using One McDonalds location over another one. That is a RIPOFF and unacceptable.

I am paying for a product that is FRANCHISED so why should I have to pay more just because one franchise owner deceides he wants more profit. So be aware people of this scam and avoid giving any business to Franchises that allow this practice.

MacDonald's Prices

AUTHOR: E Finley - ()

I have never seen a MacDonald's with pricing different from one location to the next. If one owner is charging more than they should that should be brought to the attention of the corporation. Every McD's in the U.S. gives you free wifi, has the same prices, and there isn't much to complain about other than the thing they serve you doesn't look anything like what's in the picture of the thing you order. So the next time you get a Big Mac, hand it back to them and point to the picture and say, "Make it look like that one."

Sorry, but it's true, they CAN and DO set their own prices unless it's a company location..

AUTHOR: Ken - ()

It's also, NOT a Ripoff unless they posted one price and then charged you more than was posted.  Did they do that? If they honored the posted price and you willingly paid it, how did they rip you off?

Your best course now, is to buy from the other location.  I would bet that some of their prices are above AND below the prices at your former location.

not convinced

AUTHOR: Lillian - ()

Yes I do believe I am educated enough to see your point how rent could cost more in some areas over other areas and this cost is passed off to the consumer however in this case I can assure you the strip plaza that this higher priced Mcdonald's is located in is rundown and considerably less desirable location than the cheaper priced Mcdonald's. There may be many factors that you may use as an excuse to justify this price difference but the fact remains a small price increase is justified I do not see how anyone can justify to me that 20% is a fair price increase. I use many other fast food restaurants and familiar coffee shops and I know a large coffee costs me the same at just about 100's of locations across Ontario. It is this familiarity with menu items and costs that people love about Franchises. I like many people I have talked to since this has happened was unaware that McDonalds has price differences depending on which restaurant you use and thankfully now I know and will NOT be using this restaurant in the future and honestly I may just not give McDonalds my business entirely as I do not support this business practice at all.

Franchise operation does not mean prices are identical

AUTHOR: FloridaNative - ()

Just because it is a franchise from which you are purchasing goods or services, it does not mean that pricing is identical. That assumption you made has cost you money in the past.  Costs vary across franchises too (rent, taxes, etc). You assume the franchisee is making extra profit and in fact s/he might be, but there isn't even information in your report to know either way. I think the answer you received from McDonalds was accurate, even if it was not what you expected to hear.

But, the real issue here is the cost to you to purchase the item. You have complete control over the cost. It is up to you to decide where to spend your money. Now that you know there are other locations that are less expensive, you can patronize those locations, or not.  It is totally up to you.  That is the real benefit of a free market. Take this lesson about free markets and apply it to all of your purchase decisions.

Franchise?

AUTHOR: ramjet - ()

You do undesrstand don't you, that a franchise is just an arrangement with a conpany to exclusively market their products in a specific area.  They are really independent businesses and they can charge what they like for the product within some parameters.

If their price is posted and everyone is charged the same price, there is nothing wrong with it and it's certainly not a scam.

You are free to go there or anywhere else you choose.  That's the way business works.  If they charge too much and no one buys the product they probably will lower it.

Many times the cost of doing business is higher or lower from location to location, even in fairly close locations.  I would expect you will go to the cheapest one from now on.

No ripoff here, just business as usual.
