There support site is a joke, especially to them when you don't understand. I spent 2 hours trying to speed up my internet after their virus protection slow it down to the pace of a snail, then all they could do was send me to Microsoft to download XP2 who sent me back to gateway who sent me back to microsoft who said they would fix it for a fee, I can't even do a system restore to take it back to the way it was before I downloaded Mcafee. does any one have any advise i spent my money on the Mcafee system.

Thank you Ripoff and thanks to all who responded, it helps to know other people had the problems I have experienced. Those who didn't have problems thanks for trying to help but unfortunenatly me trying to fix it hasn't worked and it is most likely messed up more. It is going back to the manufactor, and I'm sure it will be a while before I get it back, the warrenty runs out in February, I can't afford to extend it so it is for the best. Now I will try to get a refund from Mcafee, so wish me luck. kcw
PS It takes me so long to get to a site I overran the bathtub.

I also recently bought the McAfee.

For the first couple of days it did slow things down while it cleaned out my system. Now everything is ok until it starts it's scheduled scanning, but it does catch the viruses and adware so I really can't complain. Prior to this I used Norton, but it was overwhelmed by some adware.

I have McAfee Virus Scan and Firewall which I get free from Comcast. I don't know what you folks are doing, but my machine runs just fine. You may want to check to see if what programs are loading on startup (the ones that run in the background in the system tray) as they can really hog up your cpu. I'm running a P4 3.0 GHz w/ 1 Gig of ram and it's fast as can be (home built system). I also run adaware and spybot and have pc optimizer installed and have little if any problems even while I run LimeWire. Check out PCWorld online if you don't know how to disable programs from running behind the scenes in the system tray.

Good luck.

Yes!...avoid Mcaffe and Norton

Avoid these two AV programs like the plague!

Working with the latest version of "Mcaffe Internet Security Suite" on a friends computer has been an ordeal from hell.

It was a brand new system (top of the line hardware...plenty of horsepower out of the CPU and 2 gigs of ram). It was a brand new baby built by myself without all the garbage software and useless hardware that cookie cutter shop computers come loaded with (ie: gateway, dell, sony, etc.). A nice fresh new install of XP-Pro with SP2 installed from the disk and I made sure it got all the updates from Microsoft. I even avoided using the install disks from Comcast for my friends broadband. Those can pile on unwanted and un-needed software. With very little networking knowlege you can easily get it to see the net without all that junk.

So...we started with a fresh new system..hardware and software (OS only).

Then....

We made the mistake of installing Mcaffe. I was stunned.

The computer was near dead. It took 15 minutes to boot up. It constantly gave popups saying there was a problem with the internet connection. And most importantly there was a bizzare popup badgering us to register our copy of "Freedom Firewall".

We asked ourselves what the hell is this Freedom Firewall? And how the hell did adware get installed when we havent even surfed beyond microsoft and Mcaffe's webpages???(for the updates of course)

A little checking on the web (my working puter) came up with some other company other than Mcaffe for this Freedom Firewall. No mention of Mcaffe on their site..nada. Nor does Mcaffe mention Freedom Firewall on theirs. So we figured SOMEHOW we got adwared/malwared etc......somehow.

After 2 complete re-intstalls of the OS and Mcaffe..same results. So we called Mcaffe. They were horrible. Claimed first, as in your case,...not enough ram (2 gigs isnt enough!!!??). Once we blasted them about that, we went on to the "Freedom Firewall" thing. They admitted that they DID put that in their "suite".

THANKS MCAFFE! (cough!) Thanks for putting that in your documentation...not! Thanks for putting that information in readme file....NOT! Thanks for putting that information on your support webpage...NOT!

Not even an "oh by the way...we didnt really make the firewall module" note.

The Freedom Firewall was the biggest piece of garbage I've ever seen. If you try to remove it or install the other modules without it...NOTHING will work. The computer wouldnt even boot. Even the restore option (of course we made restore points the millisecond the last microsoft update was installed) wouldnt work. Clicking on the restore would give an hourglass for about 5 min (yawn!), then it would go away and nothing would happen. Thus the reason for the second re-install of the OS. The first try was a disaster trying to avoid this pathetic module of their suite.

Basically it looks like Mcaffe now contracts out to other companies for some of its modules. They are very cloak and dagger about it. Even the first support tech we spoke too avoided the question. It wasnt till we got another one that they admitted Freedom was not really theirs.

The biggest insult came when they told us to contact Freedom.net for support!

Excuse me!? We buy Mcaffe. We get support from someone else?? But only after we beat it out of them???

Shnooks!

We are using Avast now. Its free. Its easy. Its been stable for weeks. And it doesnt slow the computer down much at all (which is really unavoidable with any AV program...they all have to slow it a bit!).

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Kathy, we need more information in order to help you.

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 11, 2006

Kathy,

There are a lot of variables in a slow system. Keep in mind that active protection by any antivirus program will slow down your computer.

What are your system specs such as amount of memory and type of operating system? What type of internet connection are you using? Who is your provider?

What is XP2? Did you mean SP2? Why can't you do a system restore? All you need is your factory install disks. If you don't have them you can get them from gateway.

I am guessing your computer has insufficient memory to run the McAffee program.

How old is your computer? What type of routine maintenence do you perform on your system? Please explain.

Keep in mind that the setup and upkeep of your computer is your responsibility, not McAffee's. They are only obligated to give basic technical support for their product. The same goes for Gateway and Microsoft. Live customer service costs a lot of money.

I suggest you take a few computer classes so you can understand the workings of your computer better.

Is there an uninstall file?

AUTHOR: Lorraine - Geek Consumer Advocate :-) - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, November 11, 2006

Hey Kathy. Did you check the folder you installed the program in and see if there is an uninstall .exe file there? Most programs have them and that would get it off your computer if it's not letting you use your system restore for some odd reason. If you don't see one and you installed it from a CD or DVD, check the disk to see if there's one on there.

There's really no reason to go out and buy an anti virus program these days. AVG is free and works much better than McAfee and Norton. I've talked to many who changed over to AVG and found it caught viruses than the other two missed totally.

The best part is of course, the fact it doesn't slow your computer down so much you feel like a bullmoose with it's foot stuck in the mud. :)
