Meijer Department stores have a severely heinous working enviroment, and probably have health code violations. ESPECIALLY if you buy baby products.

My departement manager and boss did not like me from the moment she met me, even though I didn't say two words to her. I heard her gossiping about me twice, and my coworkers, I heard once gossiping about what she, my boss, had said. I suspect that my "high school cheerleader" appearance (pretty, but very young looking apperently) caused her to assume that I acted like a high school cheerleader stereotype- ditzy, unintelligent, slow, and even slightly lazy. However, this is the opposite of my actual personality, I am a very hardworking individual who has higher than average intelligence and common sense.

Hearing my coworkers and boss gossip about me like over dramatic school girls (and completely careless ones at that) upset me, and made work more or less like high school: a nightmare. I do not think it's right when an upper level employee spreads rumors about her employee. I dreaded work like it was death.

Also: I was very very ill and attempted to call in sick. I was told if I didn't make it in, I didn't have a job to make it in to (and very impolitely might I add). This was during the swine flu outbreak. I worked as a cashier- touching peoples food, and I had to straighten the baby section- meaning babyfood, blankets, clothes, etc etc.. It just doesn't seem right to have sick people handling your and your babies food and clothes.

Thought everyone should know where they were getting their groceries. :). Thanks.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Working enviorment

AUTHOR: Catdogbird - (U.S.A.)

I accepted a job from Meijer in 2010. They told me the job was planagram. I am unable to lift, or be on my feet for any extended period of time. After the first night working, I had to quit. Big communication problem. I was hired for days, first shift was 10pm til 7 am. Not what I was told I would be working. Job entailed stocking and building shelves. Something I cannot do. Guess I shoud have pushed for a more detailed job description.

Pay there is nothing you can live on even at 40 hrs. especially after they make you pay for a locker, work shirts that are deducted from your pay, require pants and shoes in a certain color, union dues and Insurance benifits. Then you are told no paycheck, only options are a Meijer pay card that you can use at their store or get direct deposit into chase bank. (It's the bank in their lobby.)Was told no calling off if you did you were fired.

All employees, regardless of experiance or education start at minium wage. Was told several different things during the 3 interview process concerning wages, benefits and job itself. This company does not know how to treat it's employees.Every employee seems like they are just struggling to be there and now I realize why,They are. Fair wage for fair work. HHHMMM. I don't think so.

#2 UPDATE Employee

Rebuttal Poor Employee Conditions Ann Arbor, MI

AUTHOR: anon. - (USA)

I do not know who this employee is. I work at the Meijer store in Ypsilanti. I do not know what the motives of this person are, or if the events actually happened. However, I do know that the address that they gave is incorrect. There is only one Meijer store in Ann Arbor: Meijer #64, on Saline Road.

We employees have enough problems with incompetent management, customers who are rude, inconsiderate and/or complain about things that are out of our control and company policies designed to keep us in our place. To have someone report incidents that never happened and represent themselves as an employee only hurts us more, not help.

Does Meijer treat their customers and employees unethicaly? Yes, but then so does just about every corporation in this country. Does it help for the customers to complain to the corporate headquarters? No. In fact it just makes the situation worse for the employees, since everyone knows that the CEOs in this country are gods who can do no wrong. That means that whatever the problem is it must be the employees fault. Unless of course you go public. Then they will fix the problem, but only for that one incident.

What about the unions? They are paper tigers owned by the companies to make the employees feel good. Unfortunately, no one has ever considered that the unions need competition to perform ethically. Oh wait. Corporations are in competition with each other and they dont perform ethically.

And then there are groups like Ripoff Report. You have been around how long? You provide a place for people to vent, but what else have you done to improve or fix things? How many companies have you had complaints about and you still havent detected the pattern of corporate dishonesty and insensitivity of all the major corporations? And you people still think that what happens to you is just an isolated incident?

Most of the corporate leaders in this country only care about one thing: How can they make money for themselves. It is all about image. People have to look past the glamor and get laws passed without loopholes. Lawyers need to take up the cause of the workers and customers against big businesses like Meijer. Until then, nothing will change.

Certainly writing bogus reports will do nothing to change anything for the better.
