Mercedes made tens of thousands of E320 vehicles in Stuggart, Germany that had serious rust problems from model years 2000 thru 2004. This was first discovered in Europe and there was a Mercedes Benz Manufacturers recall for cars in Europe. All vehicles sent to North America have no such recall, although they were also made in Germany. Now 10 years after productiion and after warranty expiration, Mercedes refuses to replace doors, hoods, fenders tailgates, etc. on vehicles that should have been recalled, when the rust problem was discovered. Apparently they switched the paint type from oil based to water based the and the slow process of internal rusting began to occur just a few years after the cars were bought. Mercedes kept the problem quiet in America. Rusting through the metal from the inside out in most doors, hoods, trnk lids and tailgates doesn't materize immedialtely and in most cases after the 8 year Mercedes Warranty on corrosion has expired, even though the extend of rust shows it has been on-going for years. I contacted MBUSA in the 9th year of manufacture of my vehicle and they declined any responsibility.
