On Saturday, November 14, 2009, we received a knock on the door from James Olward.  He offered us a free carpet cleaning and a can of Glade Air Freshener for the opportunity to demonstrate the Kirby Vacuum cleaner he was selling.  He assured us he would be in and out in 30 minutes.  We agreed.

James demonstrated the machine over the next 3 and a half hours later he finally told us the price of $2,000.  We told him we were not interested.  He continued to pitch his machine for the next half an hour, making calls trying to lower the price and practically begged us to buy from him so he could win some vacation contest.  Up to this point, he still had not cleaned the carpet.  It was only after I insisted he shampoo the carpet or leave that he finally shampooed a five foot by five foot square of carpet.  I informed James I would not be purchasing a vacuum from him.

The second supervisor, Artis Webb, showed up at our door.  A total of four and a half hours later he offered us a deal we were finally willing to accept just to get them out of the house.  We should have called the police, but ended up just taking the deal.  $1,284 for the machine, a years worth of bags and belts, and a "honeymoon" period where we could have someone from the company come out to clean all of our carpets to ensure we knew how the machine worked.

The catch was, by contract, we had 3 days to let them know in writing if we wanted to cancel the contract.  Specifically, the contract states:

"You may CANCEL this transaction, without any Penalty or Obligation, within THREE BUSINESS DAYS from the above date (11/14/09).  If you cancel, any property traded in, any payments made by you under the contract or sale, and any negotiable instrument executed by you will be returned within TEN DAYS following receipt by the seller of your cancellation notice, and any security interest arising out of the transaction will be canceled.

If you cancel, you must make available to the seller at your residence, in substantially as good condition as when received, any goods delivered to you under this contract or sale; or you may, if you wish, comply with the instructions of the seller regarding the return shipment of the goods at the seller's expense and risk.

If you do make the goods available to the seller and the seller does not pick them up within 20 days of the date of your Notice of Cancellation, you may retain or dispose of the good without any further obligation.

If you fail to make the goods available to the seller, or if you agree to return the goods to the seller and fail to do so, then you remain liable for performance of all obligations under the contract.

To cancel this transaction, mail or deliver a signed and dated copy of this Cancellation Notice or any other written notice, or send a telegram, to..."

On Monday, November 16, 2009, I went to the local post office and sent them via certified mail the signed cancellation notice.  We received confirmed delivery for Wednesday, November 18, 2009.  We complied with the requirement of filing the cancellation within 3 business days.  We also called and spoke to the secretary to confirm she received the notice.  She assured us she did and she would have the supervisor, Artis Webb, contact us to arrange for pickup.

On Monday, November 23, 2009, Artis Webb returned to our home unannounced.  He claimed he was just in the area and stopped by to pick up the machine.  I informed him he was supposed to call and make an appointment to which he could only apologize, but did not intend to leave.  I also informed him that we had not yet received our refund and he assured us we would by November 28 (10 days after they received the cancellation notice).  I allowed him back into our home to pack up and take his machine because I did not want to violate the cancellation notice by not allowing him access to the machine within 20 days.

It is now December 9, 2009, and we have not received our refund.  My wife has called the offices of Metro Rhino Distributors no less than three times a week since November 28.  Every time she has called she is either put on hold indefinitely or told the person she needs to speak to is not in.

I called yesterday myself and when the receptionist told me the Finance Manager was on the phone, I demanded she give me a direct contact number for her.  The receptionist gave me the cell phone number of Christine.  My wife called Christine directly this morning.  Christine was furious someone gave up her cell phone number and informed my wife she has not been to work in weeks and was currently on her way to North Carolina because her daughter recently gave birth to a premature baby.  My wife told her we were past waiting for our refund and Christine told my wife she would get to it when she was ready and hung up.

Again, we called to contact the office, asking to speak to the manager or owner directly and was placed on hold for twenty minutes.  That is when I decided to file this report and I plan to call the police later today.

Same Experience in Newnan, Georgia

AUTHOR: S. Watson - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 07, 2014

I have to say that your experience reflects my own in May 2013, where I was getting ready for dinner and a Middle Eastern woman came to my door offering to shampoo my carpet in one room to market a new business in town. She said for our trouble she would give us a can of Glade Room Spray. I didn't care about the room spray.

I questioned her closely about this being a sales call and she assured me that it was not and it would really help her out. There was a man with her in his late twenties. He was very personalable, in a nice suite, and his name was James. He said the 'demonstration' would only take 30 minutes. I told them to come back during normal hours since we were getting ready to sit down for dinner. They pressed on in the nicest of ways through conversation tactics. Four and half hours later, we were haggling over a price of a Kirby. James was making phone calls every few minutes and a woman showed up at our door to 'pick' James up. ButI think she was 'the closer'.

I could go on an on about the persuasively agressive tactics these sales people used. One being they can read uncertainty and people pleasing a mile a way and that is what they play on. That is why they were able to stay in our houses for hours after lying about their motives. That is why they call in the 'closers' they manipulate us in our own houses with deftly placed words meant to confuse the issues and offer up a basic bate and switch. They are too nice to treat like a common criminal so we don't treat them to abusive rejection.

I absolutely refused the product and told them we needed to now get to bed. I said over and over how we could not afford another bill to pay on at that time. They didn't care. They pressed and pressed and pressed, putting the velvet knife in all the way. Shameless! I let them, only because I was tired and they were so nice and we visited more than we acted out our parts of a very contrived play.

They got the price down to $1200 from $2995. They said they could give us top dollar for our old Kirby -$1795. A machine they made much over. They said they would make our price affordable. I said NO! But they would not leave, they pressed on.

Nice people don't like to get ugly, and especiall with people who are trained manipulators! I too took the poisoned purple coolaide just to make them leave. And still they didn't. They overstayed their welcome. They left at 11:30 PM! When they finally left, it was the calm before the storm.

Three months later, my husband called to discuss why our payments were not what they said they would be. Meg Webb came out and looked over our contract concerned. She 'fixed' the contract with a new contract and told us that our 12 months same as cash would begin anew with the corrected contract.

That was in August 2013. Sept 2013 payment came out of our checking account. October's payment was the same. I called Meg Webb several times at the office and received numerous excuses for her unavilabiity. Nov. 2014, our payments still didn't change. We called the credit company who informed us that she had placed an incorrect date on the new contract.

Meg Webb lied to us so convincingly with sincerity saying our year would start in August, but she put the old date of May on the contract she submitted to Preferred Credit. To Preferred our year would be over in May 2014.

Come February 2014 we called to find the payoff amount. My husband was quoted an amount and we decided to make the full payment online ourselves to avoid the 'processing fee' charges from making the payment over the phone.

A couple days later, I called Preferred Credit once again to get the correct amount and was quoted the paid amount instead of the payoff amount. I asked and when I went on line, that is the amount I paid. I paid the amount believing that the matter was completely done, not realizing it was $41.82 short of a payoff. Preferred waited until the end of June to notify us that we would have to pay the interest instead of letting us know that our final payment was'nt our final payment in reality.

That was nice of them, had we known any better, had we known to second guess them as professionals or that we still owed money to them we would have made sure to pay it off! But they conveniently withheld communication of such until after a time that would benefit them.

July 5, 2014 we get a letter from Preferred saying we owe the balance of the full amount for the Kirby: $ 1795, but they will consider the matter settled if we pay them $509. This was due to the 'mix up' in contracts when Meg Webb sent them contract information with incorrect dates on them.

Now we have to go through a lengthy investigation of the past facts as they are pieced together, but we already know that Preferred wants their money. Oh! How I wish we never let James into our home. This Kirby worked only a few times, then we've had on-going problems with belts and low suction that doesn't pull out the dirt but flings it everywhere. It wouldn't be so bad if we had a product that actually lived up to it's name!

I think that Metro Rhino is a very sophisticated business that deals in graft and trains it's sales people to be sneaky, duplicitous and cleverly persuasive in their tactics. I have buyers remorse now. I dislike being put in a position to have to throw people out and call the police. But that is exactly I should have done, and would do in the future.

I say do not open your doors to Metro Rhino Distributors! They take advantage of good people, both consumers and employees, who work hard for their money !

This makes no sense

AUTHOR: Ed - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, February 16, 2012

Let me understand this.  There was someone in your house, and you ordered them to leave.  When they refused to leave, you didn't call the police.  You didn't physically throw them out.  You didn't throw their vacuum out on the front lawn.  Instead you bought something from them.

So if you catch me breaking into your house, all I have to do is sell you vacuum and you won't call the police?  Really???

They were in YOUR home.  All you had to do was order them to leave one time.  If they didn't immediately leave, you can call the police and have them arrested.

Yet you bought something from them???  Makes absolutely no sense.

Your story and the one you responded to only tells me that you wanted to buy the vacuum, just at a cheaper price.  Well you have a really good vacuum.  It's the best one sold in America.  If you take care of it, a Kirby will last you 25 years.

I Feel For You

AUTHOR: Lan - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 08, 2012

I feel for you man, I had a similar experience.  They arrived to do their cleaning at dinner and I stupidly let them in.  I couldn't get rid of them for 3 hours.  I have 2 small children who were very hungry but I couldn't get them to leave.  When they dropped the price under 1000 for the vacuum I accepted just to get them to leave.  I used their financing and only had to give a 100 dollar deposit.  The next day I sent in the cancellations, all 4 I had 4 different ways to ensure they got them.
