We employed the services of freelance web designer Michael Cassius, also known as Michael Wilson, and trading as Cassius and Los Vivos, based in Melbourne, Australia, to redesign our website.
We paid Michael Cassius several thousands of dollars in advance and were promised the web pages would be finished within 3 months. Yet for the next 12 months, Michael did very little work, producing just a few first drafts of a handful of the pages we paid him to design. Deadline after deadline was broken, despite Michael Cassius giving us firm promises the work would be completed on time.
During that time, Michael Cassius changed his phone number without informing us, making it difficult to get in touch as he often didn't reply to emails.
A few months ago, Michael tricked us into paying him even more money, claiming he was almost finished our project, and he showed us a few more pages he had created first drafts for. He also offered us a discount on the final price, due to the project taking so long, as well as offering to throw in for free thousands of dollars of SEO services. Excited that we were finally going to see this project completed, we paid him more money, taking the total we paid in advance to him to well over $6,000. After that, we saw no further progess with our project. He kept claiming he was working day and night on it, but we never saw any results.
During that time, we tried to get him to sign a contract that set clear deadlines and define payments. He refused to sign a contract for the work. We later found out after talking to a lawyer that without a clearly defined contract, Michael Cassius could still claim ownership of the intellectual property he created when developing our website, thus potentially causing us problems in the future.
Michael attempted to blame us for everything, claiming we wanted too many changes made to his drafts. In reality, the bulk of the changes requested were due to the fact Michael didn't read the design spec properly and didn't look at the existing website to see what information needed to be included.
Michael's communication skills were apalling, he had no work ethic, and his sole aim appeared to be to accumulate as much money as possible and do as little work as possible.
Initially, we were wondering if we were just unlucky - catching him at a very busy or bad time. After some investigation, we began to learn of other businesses recently who also had problems with Michael Cassius. And they had exactly the same problems - deadlines missed, work incomplete, and they also received no refund for work that wasn't finished.
After 12 months of battling with him and getting nowhere, and after receiving not one fully completed web page, we asked him for a refund. He refused to refund the money and cut off all communications with us. Maybe he'd realised he couldn't get another cent out of us, so he thought it best to cut us loose and ignore us and hope it would all go away.
However, if Michael Cassius thought that after taking over $6,000 from us, and delivering us not one single web page, that we were simply going to go away, then he has screws loose in his head.
We urge anyone who intends to hire Michael Cassius, of Cassius Web Design or Los Vivos Web Design, to not pay him one cent in advance, and terminate the arrangement as soon as he misses the first deadline.
