I made an online reservation at this hotel a few weeks ago. My travel plans changed, and I was under the impression that I had up until 4:00 PM on the date of arrival to cancel. I called the 800 number, and they told me that the policy was that the reservation had to be cancelled by 4:00 PM one day prior!

The 800 number rep also told me that the local hotel could make an exception. They called the hotel, but they would not waive the cancellation fee of one night's charge. I called the hotel as well and was told that the 800 number rep told them that they could charge me!

I then called Microtel's customer service number. They contacted the hotel, and, again, the hotel refused to budge.

I checked my confirmation email. These Microtel folks are very slick! They don't mention their 24-hour cancellation policy. Instead, they say, "If you need to cancel, you must do so by 4:00 PM local hotel time on November 18, 2008 or your credit card will be charged for one night's stay."

In summary, I've been ripped off! I'm crossing them off of my list, and I hope that you will do the same!

Consider This

AUTHOR: David Stirrup - (U.S.A.)

Regarding Robert's comments, I, too, know how to read a calendar. You are missing the point! Suggest they consider be more specific about their cancellation policy. Why not say, "Please note that this room must be cancelled 24 hours prior to our stated check-in time or you will be charged" or something to that effect. This is what I call Customer Service! Also, Microtel could have extended some type of olive branch such as a lower cancellation fee, a coupon for a future stay, etc. That way it would have been a win-win instead of a win-lose. I don't know what kind of business you are in Robert, but I always try to work with my clients to make sure they are satisfied.

Not a RipOff...

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

This is not a RipOff you just failed to read the e-mail. To have the impression you had you either don't travel a lot or where you normally stay has a same day cancellation policy. But it is not uncommon for a hotel/motel to require you to cancel in advance. Depending on the hotel or area 1 day or even 2 days prior may not be out of the ordinary.

You were checking in on the 19th, and the e-mail says you need to cancel by 4pm on the 18th. Sounds pretty clear what they are telling you. The last time I checked my calendar the 18th is a day before the 19th.
