I purchased a home protection plan from National Home Protection in July 2008. I called them for service on my dishwasher on September 18, 2008 and had a repairman service it on September 19.

The problem with the dishwasher is that is doesn't drain the water out. It seemed to be fixed for a couple of weeks, but I had to call the service tech to come back out for the same problem two weeks later. He again thought the problem was fixed. I ran it the next day and the water did not drain -obviously not repaired.

I called NHP and I was told a repairman would be sent out again and he came for the third time on Friday, October 10. He checked the dishwasher and told me repairs would be at least $400 and he was going to have to call NHP to see if they wanted to repair it or replace it and I would be hearing from them.

I waited until Monday, October 13 to call NHP when I hadn't heard from them. The message said they were closed for system upgrades. I tried to call them all week and finally spoke to someone named Kevin on Thursday, October 16. He told me I could either wait 10-12 weeks for a dishwasher on backorder or take a settlement for $110.36. I told him that was unacceptable and he told me to email Scott at disputes@nationalhomeprotection. I have never heard from Scott and I have emailed him three times.

I cannot believe that a dishwasher is on backorder for that long and that they seriously think an offer of $110.36 is fair in any way. Where can I purchase a dishwasher for that price?

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and received this email from NHP on October 24:
Buyout offer of $110.36

This is the amount we arrived at in accordance with our purchasing department. As per section F12 of our policy which states NHP reserves the right to provide cash back in lieu of repair or replacement in the amount of NHP's actual cost (which at times may be less than retail) to repair or replace such item subject to the terms of the contract.

Please let me know if this offer is acceptable to you as the buyout offer expires 30 days after it is made known to you.

Are they seriously able to get away with this??!!! I can't believe it. I paid $219.19 for my policy and it's a total joke.

State of New York, Office of the Attorney General v.s. National Home Protection

AUTHOR: Mae - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 13, 2008

It appears that the New York State, Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is looking into complaints regarding National Home Protection (NHP) and possibly taking action.

I filed my complaint with the New York State, Office of Attorney General, in August 2008.

There is strength in numbers, so please file a complaint as follows: Log onto the following Website http://www.oag.state.ny.us Then Go to "Resource Center" and Click On "Consumer Frauds" then Click On "Filing a Consumer Complaint." Click on the down arrow next to "Choose a Regional Office." Scroll down and Click On "New York City," then Click On "Go." Type all pertinent information and Complete the Form in Full, then Print It. Mail to the address at the bottom of the form. Be Sure to Include Copies (No Originals) of All Important Papers Concerning Your Transaction.

I attached a Three-Page Letter, which was a "Narrative" of All My Phone Calls to NHP (I kept a Log). I "Attached" 15 Copies of Emails to/from NHP, NHP Customer Satisfaction Surveys that I cut and pasted to a File and pages from NHP's Website with all their Lies about "Repair/Replace, Home Depot Gift Card, etc." I sent everything to the NY OAG at the end of August 2008. It took over two months to hear from the NY OAG, at which time they sent me an "Affidavit," that I had to have Notarized, affirming that the copy of my Complaint was "a true and accurate copy" which "accurately described my dealings with National Home Protection. I've always learned that if you file a complaint, the more information you provide and the more meticulous your complaint, the better your chances of achieving a result.

Please File a Complaint with the State of New York Attorney General. Please follow my Guidelines above. Let's Get These RipOff Artists.

Thanks for Your Help. It would be beneficial for the NY OAG to see that this injustice is very widespread, that people from all across the Country are being Scammed by NHP, they are Despicable!! We Need Help from the Service Contractors as well!!

Most home warranty plans are a joke.

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

Almost all of the plans do the same things to limit claims and deny payment. I used to be a real estate agent, and only one local company really honored their warranty obligation.
