I reccently received a sweepstakes offer i the mail. I called in for it and at the end they offered me a bunch of things such as watches, magazines and an organizer. They told me that they would charge me like a dollar something for these magazines, and that I could pay over the phone with my debit card.

I told them that I had no money in my checking account, so I could not do that. They then informed me that if I had an over the limit credit card I could use that because if it declined I could pay through the mail then. I responded that I did not have one.

She then told me that if I used my debit card and it declined I could also then pay through the mail. I gave her my information and it declined as I suspected. I now checked my account balance today and they charged my card, without my approval, which put me into a negative balance.

I called the customer service number after struggling to find the number in the first place. The guy that answered told me pretty much that I was screwed because I gave them my information and by doing that that gives them my permission to charge the card.

He basically told me I was lying because they could not tell us to use a card knowing that it would not go through. But if you yell about it long enough they will give you your money back!

great Bait and Switch idea on this prize lotto offering

AUTHOR: ISLANDER12 - (U.S.A.)

Uh yea right we saw them hand out a check to a winner and can't fake that, OK how do you know that for sure? Just because you saw them hand a check out doesn't mean it's for real , anybody can do that with a hired actor/actress which is what one of my friends got paid to do who worked for one of these agencies that got a call for an actor for hire and when he showed up they told him what was gonna happen but it wasn't a real check but act surprised.
So come on how come we don't see it on the Internet , newspaper, TV news for such a large amount of money being given out? Wouldn't that show that this is on the up and up and great advertisement for the company? Or is it just show for employees only so you can say it's for real I saw it first hand, at least the lotto is told at what store it's won at even though the person doesn't want to be on TV, Publishers Clearing House is on TV/Internet/in newspaper so why wouldn't this be advertised somewhere?

#2 UPDATE Employee

i am an employee at nme

AUTHOR: Sdp Employee - (U.S.A.)

well first off i want to say i do work for this company i am ssa associate and was a verifier for this company and for those people who say they did not get authorization to debt your accounts and or credit cards are a bunch of liars..there are 3 steps that the customer has to do in order to complete there magazine order 1. give us your expiration date 2. read the number. 3 confirm the last 4 digits of the card your using..say them and punch them into the phone as well yes you are taped with time and date stamp to protect us and the reputation of the company for people who say like yourselves you were ripped off when you know you were not...you say yes to magazines give us your card information what do you think your doing?? i mean for jimminy crickets not only does the ssa tell you what your doing but we go over it again in the verification the amount what your getting all of it...

Same thing with the upsells we offer the gift cards if you want them you again have to verify your last 4 digits and punch them into the phone and say yes, uh huh, or ok in order for us to process the charge. we buy law can not authorize and charge to anyones account with out your permission and again your yes and you punching your 4 digits in..so again you made the purchase your payin for a service..

I mean if your goin to use a declined card that you know will decline why say yes to the order?? Do you or can you go to the store and use a declined card for a purchases for like groceries or something?? no you will be walking away with nothing so why buy something you know you cant afford..and then come and complain and make a company look bad??

Now for the ssa yes we have to rebuttle you 4 times do we normally get threw all 4 rebuttles no why?? cause buying magazines is an impulse buy thats why. you dont need them you want them. we dont hound you we offer to renew the magazines you already get cause obviously you like them if you have a subscription threw somewere else...and also its kinda like goin to a resturant they constantantly ask you do you want to upsize that or offer you other things as well why does that sales make it any different than what we do?

I personally think you all come here to beef out a comapnybecause you purchased something you can not afford but thought you could at the time...you cant go into a store a year later with something and want to return it cause well you just dont want it anymore they say to bad so sad. So basically i say get over it you did NOT get scammed you were just stupid and purchased something you could not afford next time dont impulse buy just say no..see how simple that it...

Get YOUR money back - short instructions how to get YOUR money from the NME EVIL doers.

AUTHOR: John Crusader - (U.S.A.)

Want you money back? Call customer service/retention and do the following.
(call the 800 or 727-524-3600). If someone isn't helping, hang up and call again.

The following data is well published.

We do have rules. When someone threatens to call the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General, their lawyer, or threatens to call their credit card company and REVERSE/DISPUTE THE CHARGE we CAN NOT try and 'save' the account we have to go straight to canceling the account with a full refund. If someone does make a threat and we don't cancel the account we'll get in trouble.

'I'm an employee of the national magazine exchange, I work in the Customer Service department actually called Customer RETENTION, because our job is to get the customers not to cancel their account. We get commission based on 'cancel requests' saved. We are scripted and have certain offers we have to make. First we try and spread the payments out then give them 4 years for the price of 3....and so on.

For people turned into a collection agency tell them you cancelled or that you want to cancel as above. NME uses collection agencies as a bluff but hasn't turned people over to the credit rating bureaus because they do not want the law after them. Try calling back and demanding a refund. That will work and they will leave you alone. If a collection agency calls tell them you cancelled and they will close your account. BE FIRM. In 20 years NME has never reported people to the credit rating bureaus

It's your money so demand that it be refunded.
CRAP ON YOU NME.

great idea!

AUTHOR: Momof3satx - (U.S.A.)

That's a great tip! That also worked with another magazine company I was with. They refused to cancel my membership and didn't take my threat to call the BBB seriously. I did and within a few months my services were canceled.

#5 UPDATE EX-employee responds

No problem, read this and learn how to get your money back from national magazine exchange.

AUTHOR: E F - (U.S.A.)

Read the following from yoyo1988:
I'm an employee of the national magazine exchange, I work in the Customer Service department. At work it's really called the Customer RETENTION department, because our job is to get the customers not to cancel their account. We get commision based on how many 'cancel requests' we save. If someone calls to cancel we have to save the account. We are scripted and have certain offers we have to make. First we try and spread the payments out then give them 4 years for the price of 3....and so on.

We do have rules though. When ever someone threatens to call the Better Buisness Boureau, Attorney General, their lawer, or threatens to call their credit card company and reverse the charge we CAN NOT try and 'save' the account we have to go staight to canceling the account with a full refund. If someone does make a threat and we don't cancel the account there is a good chance we'll get in trouble for it. Q.D listens to random calls all day and writes you up if you do something wrong. For example certain states have laws where if their citizens make any purchase over the phone they can cancle at anytime. Most people don't even know this law exists in their state. These states are called 'cancel at will' and if a customer lives in this state it will say it in red when we pull up the customers account. If the cusomers calls to cancel for the second time we can't work the account we have to cancel it. I got in trouble last week because I didn't scroll down and read all the times a customer had called and I didn't see it was their second cancel request.

I know a lot of people think this company is a rip off and I do feel bad for some of the people that get hassled into buying magazines that's why I'm writing this to tell everyone how to cancel and get their money back. However, the National Magazine Exchange is not a complete rip off. The sweepstakes is real. We have a new sweepstakes every two years. I've seen them give the winner their check and there's no way that could've been fake.

Our company does prey on the elderly and low educated. But if half the people who called into our company actually listened to what they were being told they would understand that they were placing a magazine order and their credit card was being charged. First people talk to the sales reps then they get transferred to the 'Verifier' who has to get the person to say yes to the magazine purchase 4 times before they can place the order. People pick 2-3 magazines then after the order is placed a computer program automatically pick 7-8 more magazines to add on to the package, but this doesn't cost the customer anything extra, and if the customer doesn't like the 'bonus' magazines they can call customer service and change them.

You do get the magazines for 1.29 a week. There are 52 weeks in a year so it comes to 67.08 a year, and we have 1,2,3 and 4 year packages. So a four year package could end up costing you 268 dollars.

Just to let everyone know, about 50% of the calls I get are unsatisfied customers who think we frauded them and the other 50% are very satisfied customers who love the program and are just calling to change their magazines.

This company does have a lot of benefits to people. You get 10 magazines a month for a total of 67.08 dollars a year. AND YOU DO ACTUALLY GET YOUR MAGAZINES. You can also change your magazines as long as you have 6 months left in the service. So I think it's pretty cool. You can try out a magazine for a month or two and if you decide you don't like it you can change it. We have over 200 magazines and we have a lot of the really popular ones. Just make sure you really listen to the Sales rep so you know how much money they are possibly taking from you. Oh yeah cause if you authorize them to bill your card they'll take out your payment every 30 days until you've paid your account in full. How much money they take depends on what plan year you're on and how they broke the payments up for you.

So remember listen to the Sale rep, and if you got hassled into buying the magazine subscription call customer service and tell them if you don't cancel your account you will call your lawer, the better buisness boureau, or attorney general. If you do that your account will be canceld and you will get all your money back
