I will start by stating that although this is not a typical rip-off I do feel that I needed to post this since National Car Rental has refused to respond to my complaint.

I had rented a car from National at Dulles Airport and was returning the car to the same airport.  I have approx 200 rental days a year so I am not naive to the car rental process.  The attendant came to the car and while I was packing up my GPS, he checked the fuel and mileage.

I finished packing my belongings and looked around to find the attendant to get a copy of my receipt.  I saw that he was checking in the guy who pulled in after me.  I stood and watched as the attendant printed both of our receipts and handed the guy behind me his receipt.

The attendant then walked over to me and crumpled my receipt into a ball and threw it at me.  I was speechless.  I told him (actually rather nicely and it surprised even me how nice I was) that I needed a copy that was not crumpled.  He replied "No it will do".

Now my voice started to get a little louder.  The supervisor came over and asked what the problem was.  I told her what happened and showed her the receipt.  She said "he can print a new one".  I explained that he was refusing to do that.  She then told me to get on the shuttle to the terminal and she would print a new receipt.  Then both the supervisor and the shuttle driver told me that it was not the attendant's fault because English was not his first language and he was from Africa.

I do not know of anywhere where this would not be considered rude.  I contacted National and they stated they would have someone contact me to discuss this issue but it has been 3 weeks and I have not heard from National.

AUTHOR: Hiding in plain sight - (U.S.A.)

Prior to the guy crumpling my receipt I had said one sentence to him.  He asked how the car was and I replied good.

That is why I did not understand why he did this.  My only guess is that he was having a bad day or had a problem with me either as a woman or because I stepped to the trunk to pack my stuff and did not stand next to the door waiting for my receipt.

I respect the people who make my job easier.  Be that person the car rental people, the hotel concierge (who I could not do my job without) or the waitstaff at the hotel restaurant.

I would be the first to tell you that after he refused to reprint the receipt I got loud and angry but up until that point I was too tired (it was 4:30 am on a saturday morning).

I normally tip the attendant but this guy did not even give me the chance to.  Had he just handed me my receipt I would have handed him his tip and got on the shuttle.

Having been in the service industry myself I can not think of anything that a paying customer could do that would ever make it ok to crumple the receipt and throw it to/at them.  And I know I did nothing rude, unkind or offensive.  At the worst I was not very talkative or "bubbly" that early but I am the same every time I have to make a 6am plane and have never been treated this way.

I have actually had hotel staff ask what company I work for and email the company stating how nice I was (I knew the concierge had a bad day with an unruly customer so I brought her a braised rabbit dinner from Lonesome Dove Bistro)so I know that I did nothing to the car rental attendant.
