Similar to many reports discussing the same issue, I have also been a victim of National City Bank's overdraft scam. I was unaware that my account was overdrafted by less than 5 dollars. I was immediately hit with a $36 overdraft fee and $8 overdraft fee per day... something that was never discussed when I opened the account. I also relocated to Atlanta, so I did not receive my bank statements for nearly a month. After making a paypal deposit I learned that my $200 owed to NCB.

This is CRIMINAL. I have to speak with a branch manager tommorrow after receiving no assistance or courtesy from customer support to get this matter resolved and this account closed immediately. I would discourage anyone from considering them for any form of business. I have banked with 4 major banks... I have NEVER experienced anything like this in my entire LIFE.

Again.. THIS IS CRIMINAL!!

National City/Overdraft

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

Due to the recession, I am a victim of overdraft fees with National City.  I had to drive to work on Monday and I was using their horrible debit card.  I was in the process of selling my older car and the people, who took my car wasn't going to be availiable until tomorrow.  When I was going home from work on around 12 am, I noticed my checking account was $14.00, and then the next day it was over $300.  The brank manager helped refund some of those fees, but this stupid card doesn't register all of the transactions.  Towards the end of the week, this card too over 1/2 of my pay check, due to overdraft charges.  Something needs to be done about these overdraft fees.  I understand people, need to be responsible, but on the other side of the coin, when a charge is made on a card, these needs something to be registered with the consumer, when he check his account.  I plan on spreading the word about about National City and their overpractices of overdraft charges.  They've not heard the last of me.

not criminal

AUTHOR: Nancy - (U.S.A.)

IT is prefectly legal. How come you were unaware that you ahd an overdraft? If you have an accurate check register, that would not happen, or at least you would be aware of it.

Umm....

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

You don't overdraft your account if you don't spend more than is available. So just how were you unaware of your balance in YOUR account?

How did you want them to "discuss" the fees with you?

So for a little advise. If you go into the manager screaming words like "criminal" and "scam" you are probably going to get as far with them as you got with the other reps. Because it is YOUR responsibility to know your balance. If you overdraft per the terms, which you agreed to when you opened the account, they will assess you overdraft fees. But if you go in explaining your situation in a calm manner they may refund part/all of your fees, especially if this is the first time this happened.
