SEO Reputation Management at its best!

I am a current employee, who is trying to do the opposite of what management tells me to do. Management would like the sales reps (SSA's) to enter the person in the sweepstakes and than hammer them with magazines, whether they want them or not. This is called an UP when the person picks magazines and than is transferred to the verifier for billing. Once the verifier receives the caller, it is close to being all over for that person. This is where the strong-arm tactics and left out information starts. Management and trainers are telling the SSA's to get the up no matter what.

This is the CEO of National Magazine Exchange and here is his Motto!!!!! All should see this monster!
The strength and growth of SDP is attributed to our team of professionals who demonstrate every day their dedication and integrity.
- Bill Hood, CEO

The favorite saying in the office is "LIARS ARE BUYERS". We are told to keep pushing them to pick magazines even after the caller has told us NO, more than 5 times. The sad thing about this whole operation is the lack of ethics involved. Most of the staff is very young and very greedy, which in turn creates an environment of false information and lies. The only employees who do well at National Magazine Exchange are the ones without a conscience. That is where I come into play. I have set out to do the opposite of what management tells me and listen to the caller, and have some compassion for these people. I am not making much money, but I feel good about myself when I finish my shift. I am close to being fired for lack of performance, being as I am under the "ROOM AVERAGE". Management does not like to see anyone think for themselves, but just get the "UP". I even had my supervisor tell me that in 8 years of being a manager at N.M.E., he has not lost one unemployment compensation claim. What does this tell you? It is all about greed. I had a caller who told me she was 92 years old and had glaucoma, which means she could not read. I did not try and make her say no 5 times, and I was cautioned to use all rebuttals or I could be written up. They love to throw that in your face, I guess that intimidates some employees.

Now for the good part, it looks like they are starting to run out of people who have not heard of N.M.E., so they are changing the mail pieces and the script. The new mail pieces do not even list what the mail is about; "NO RULES" is the name of the sweepstakes. N.M.E. is even sending out mail pieces with a new company name on them, "NEW TIMES AND TRADITION". If this company were honest, why would they use two company names unless they were trying to fool the callers?

If the caller does not want magazines, they must be offered at least 4 other opportunities to receive something. N.M.E. makes 40% of their profit from magazine sales and 60% of profit from these other offers. There is an offer for a Gateway Computer for only $35.00 a WEEK!! Another offer is for a complimentary 5 star vacation. Also, an offer for a Direct TV system. And finally an offer for a $25.00 pre-paid gas card, or a $25.00 Wal-Mart gift card. It makes sense that Wal-Mart would be in bed with N.M.E.

Bottom line is I will keep going against what N.M.E. wants a Subscription Sales Associate to do, and do what is right for the caller. I might not last much longer, but I feel great about what I am trying to accomplish. I have been in several sales positions, and I have never seen any operation based on greed and left out information as National Magazine Exchange. Hope there will be others like me who will not just focus on the money, but what is right for the caller. In the long run N.M.E. will continue to take advantage of the less educated and elderly, but even if I prevent one more person from spending hundreds of dollars that they had no idea they were spending, I have really done my JOB!

Rob P is now President?, Lets resurface this post

AUTHOR: C J - (USA)

Wow more changes in management.

Now Rob Paolillo is President and COO? It's all on you now Mr P.

And no CFO listed on their site? How many CFO's in the past 15 years? I've lost count.

Chuck are you still out there?  Any new comments on this place.

To current/past employees, surely some of you are watching this site and have comments and complaints to share!

To new readers pay attention, this company paid $535,000 to the FTC (federal trade commission) for infractions against telemarketing laws.

I am a past employee.  I should have listened to Chuck and never worked there.  I even asked management about Chuck (as he was well published on this site) as well as all the other negative information posted.  Management had a scripted "rebuttal" to my questions including a "script" about Chuck and I was dumb enough to try working there.

FOLKS DO NOT BUY THE MAGAZINES!  SAY NO AND HANG UP!  BETTER YET DO NOT CALL!

#2 UPDATE Employee

learn to hang up

AUTHOR: tyler - ()

I am a employee of NME currently and have worked almost every department and I can tell you all first hand that it is the furthest thing from a scam...Yes we try to sell you magazines....WE are the company who  sponsors the sweepstakes that your calling in to enter. The mail piece does NOT state in any way that you have won, it is a invitation to call and enter a sweepstakes...obviously if we are sponsoring a 1.1 MILLION dollar sweepstakes from a magazine company we are going to try and sell you magazines...it even clearly states on the mail piece at the very end that we will offer you magazines...we clearly state exactly how we do the billing before taking your card number and at any time during the call if you change your mind, we cancel the order...we go over the billing in complete and full detail at least TWICE before the end of the call...the only outbound calls that the company does is to check on your existing service and offer if you'd like to renew the magazines....again I have worked all three departments. Where we originally answer and enter you into the sweepstakes then clearly state " OK YOUR ENTRY IS COMPLETE AND REGISTERED" before offering you magazines. I have also worked the verification where we go over all the billing and take the billing information. I have also worked Out bound department where again  just offer to renew...Every single call in the company is completely recorded and the company abides every law rule and regulation...the company changed owners since the only lawsuit that was fully filed and went through...different owners now different marketing company, same magazines business...if you have any concern that you were truly scammed then you can contact the company and they will listen to recording of your call...we have a department that literally sits there and listens to every single call to make sure all laws were followed and if one was broke the sale is canceled and the employee gets written up...also if you feel you got "tricked" into buying these magazines still...go to a car lot...same tactics are used by the sales people there...so in your logic every car dealership in existence is a fraud company also...if you dont want the magazines then HANG UP! we dont wanna talk to you just as much as you dont wanna listen...we state that your entry is registered before the mag offer so why stay on the line? its our job to sell you things...were not going to lose our jobs because YOU dont know where the end button is on your phone...we all have bills to pay and mouths to feed so why should we risk our jobs because your too stupid to hang up the phone??

oh and one last rebuttal guys...NME has been in business since 1984, if it was truly a scam it would have been shut down by now...its a 29 year old company for goodness sakes...

MORE "COMMON SENSE"

AUTHOR: me - (United States of America)

If I worked for Macy's as a sales clerk and someone walked into the store. Granted there is no purchase necessary to walk into a department store. However my job as a Macy's Sales Clerk is to try and sell items. So I walk up to you and ask you if i can help you find anything "as we all hear". And you say "No thank you", I'll prob rebuttal you and tell you the current sales we have going on and also mention the new perfume like available by whom ever which is very popular. Again No purchase necessary for walking into a department store. There's prob. a lot of retail workers out there or mechanics...lol it's all the same thing...If I worked at Tires Plus and I just had a flat tire I would be told to tell clients about the special they had on rotors. again you don't have to buy a new rotor even if your's is damaged but if there is a product that I have to mention. If a manager to a mechanic or a retail sales clerk with their job duty and they said no they might actually buy it i can't offer that. Everyone in that entire building would look at you like you have 2 heads and you would be fired....again same principle offer don't have to buy....lmao at least with nme u get to win money like with ne sweepstakes. again...you guys are just better off spending money and playing the lottery because if you pay money up front you don't to hear a sales pitch YOU PAID CONTRATS! if its free you will but you don't have to buy anything but it upsets you someone asked because it's just to hard to resist buying something when someone asks...just play the lottery please!

???Where is the !!!COMMON SENSE!!! in this world???

AUTHOR: me - (United States of America)

This is just ignorance!!!..THE ENTIRE NME RIP OFF REPORT THINGY JUST SHOWS AMERICAS IGNORANCE...ESPECIALLY FOR BUSINESSES...LET ME DEMONSTRATE..Here's the reality of it..PCH IS THE SAME WAY! all clearing houses!....I used to work for A CLEARING HOUSE and they are tougher on their employees than they are their potential clients but they don't fire anyone unless your not doing your job and following your script and process, that's all they ask...some CLIENTS will some won't oh well who's next...AKA some love mags and want to buy some, SO PITCH IT TO ALL to see who wants them, NOTHING WRONG with that.........It is an ABSOLUTELY FREE SWEEPSTAKES!! How do u people not read the letter before you call in? it DOES say that...BUT KEEP IN MIND IF the National Magazine Exchange goes outta business however SO DOESN'T THE SWEEPSTAKES DUHHHHH! LMAO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO WIN THEN? Bashing them FOR THEIR PITCH WITH THE MAGS will put them outta business and ELIMINATES THE SWEEPSTAKES ALL TOGETHER! DUH, HELLO, R U THERE?? As they say the lights are on but nobodies home. SO JUST SPEND THE MONEY AND PLAY THE LOTTERY and STOP COMPLAINING that you have to sit through a sales pitch...........same thing GOES with PCH (PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE)!  Just like ANYTHING ELSE YOU EITHER HAVE TO SIT THROUGH A SALES THING! DUH! You don't actually have to buy anything but the reason why THEY and the SWEEPSTAKES EXIST is because SOMEONE ACTUALLY has to pay for it, there is no such thing as a money tree. ALSO SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY LIKE THE PRICES AND WANT THE PRODUCT! the company hasn't been shut down is BECAUSE IT'S LEGAL! I've gone to several TIME SHARE showings and SEMINARS etc. and have received many sales pitches to get free tickets to plenty of things. I'M NOT DUMB ENOUGH to say well I'm NOT gonna GET SOMETHING FOR FREE BECAUSE I HAVE TO hear their offer! Oh my God I can't believe you offered me something I don't have to buy how dare you!!..You're terrible people, YOU OFFERED ME SOMETHING I DIDN'T HAVE TO BUY THAT IS THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD ANYONE CAN EVER DO. I REFUSE TO ENTER NOW INTO GETTING SOMETHING FOR FREE!!! SHAME ON YOU!  No I PERSONALLY  let them do their thing,  their rebuttals and IF I HEAR SOMETHING I LIKE BUY IT IF NOT I'LL JUST STATE NO THANKS BUT i would like the free ticket you offered. YOUR GETTING SOMETHING FOR FREE AND YOUR COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT THEY OFFERED YOU SOMETHING AND the Sponsors who would like you to buy something and WHO HAVE THE RIGHT to throw it out there but again  you don't have to buy it.  SO YOU YOUR SO UPSET that someone offered you something you don't have to buy that you don't want to enter and complain about it....Then DON'T ENTER EVER! OMG LMAO which means (Laughing my a$$ off) Throw the piece of paper away. You can do it i know you can. Take the paper and put it in the garbage can. Ill repeat that in slow motion t h r o w   i t     a w a y....You just give more people a chance to enter and win. It's funny DO YOU GUYS THINK that by complaining about the sweepstakes is going to SOLVE anything? AGAIN IF NOT FOR NME OR PCH THERE IS NO FREE SWEEPSTAKES!! THESE ARE SHAREHOLDER COMPANIES. THIS ISN'T HELD BY THE GOVERNMENT LIKE THE LOTTERY...GO BUY A LOTTERY TICKET THEN! STOP BEING STUPID!..They DO have great deals on mags and If you DO HAPPEN TO go through the entire 40 minute process to buy mags  and give your credit card information to buy something then that's what YOU CHOSE TO DO only. Don't blame others because of what YOU DID...If you don't like sweeps stakes just pay the money to play the lottery!! BUT IF YOU CONTINUE TO BASH THEM BECAUSE U HAVE TO SIT THROUGH A SALES PITCH THEN COMMON SENSE STATES THERE WILL BE NO MORE FREE LOTTERY N E MORE! I Don't mean to be mean and this is JUST MY OPINION but if you've complained about buying something YOU KNEW you DIDN'T have to buy but BOUGHT IT ANYWAYS THAT'S YOUR OWN FAULT!

Magazine RipOff Info

AUTHOR: Nancy - (United States of America)

I fought to get magazine subscriptions stopped, writing complaints, making phone calls, spending hours and postage weekly for over three months.

It was discovered that NME was one of over 300 companies nationwide that participated. A Doctor told me she was getting unwanted subscriptions at her office, and that it wasn't worth the effort to get them stopped. But she wasn't losing up to $49/day I suppose.

The scam works by giving you the runaround til you give up, or the subscription runs out. Then it is repeated in the holiday season of the year, when people are most bedraggled.

One contacts the magazine to get it stopped. They say sorry, can't do it, you must contact an "agent". You contact the distributor in Harlan Iowa, and they say you must contact an "agent". So sorry, "we are not permitted to tell you who it is". Actual response, but I got the girl to tell me anyway.

So each agent has say four subscriptions coming to you. You get one mag stopped. Do they tell you about the other three? Guess what that answer is. HOW I STOPPED THE RUNAROUND............................

The first one I stopped was by contacting the Florida Dept of Consumer Complaints. They are to be found in the Florida Dept. of Agriculture....whatever, it works. They have an online complaint filing system. The "agent" gave up $960 they claimed I owed them.

After using them up I sicced the Better Business Bureau on NME. After a while I got all the subscriptions stopped. Any magazine I received I clipped the address label, wrote a letter to "Stop ALL subscriptions", sent them a copy and the BBB a copy, and several others on my list, up to seven copies at a time as the list built, (like a copy to mag coporate headquarters). I could not determine which of the "300" agents were sending which magazine.

I now no longer subscribe to any magazines, unless it be the new www.infowars.com in print. Good luck with this industry

Glad I am gone! Horrible place to work! Does anyone have an update about the company?

AUTHOR: C J - (USA)

Does anyone know what is going on in this place?

I worked there for a while and just had to get out.

There was to much pressure to push magazines to people who did not want them.

People would say -- NO --  and we had to repeatedly do rebuttals and were constantly lectured that "buyers are liars" and to get the sale.

It seems like the job market is getting better so I had to get out of there.

Some people said they were going to unionize but I never saw anything official.

Maybe a union could make it so we don't have to be so hard on the people who call in - but I doubt it.

There were stories about somebody named Chuck and his girl friend who tried to improve the company (can't remember her name) but they were forced out.

Gotta go now.  Somebody do a post about what is going on in there.  I might have stayed if they didn't put so much pressure on us for sales.  Some people seemed to get calls that were easy sales but I seemed to always get difficult callers.

CJ

PS - I found this site after I started at the company - WOW some of these posts are good reading.

YES change your account numbers to cancel. And new people reading this DO NOT BUY THE MAGAZINES!

AUTHOR: Robert C - (USA)

Change your account numbers if they will not cancel. They will continue to take your money if you do not stop them. They will say almost anything and do what ever they can to get paid.

Remember it is their job to GET YOUR MONEY. When I was there they did not do pre employment drug testing.  These people get paid to get your money.  Figure it out.

AUTHOR: Robert C - (USA)

They are on their 4th or 5th CFO in about 7 years. WOW - and Rob got passed over AGAIN! And who knows how many inside attorneys they have had. Gotta be something wrong with this place.

Yup there sure is - just look at the THOUSANDS of postings on this site. Is Elaine Scanlon still there? At least they got out of that huge old building they were in a couple years ago.

Yeah I wish it were that simple! I called and said cancel and got the reply "You're stuck with them buddy, you're stuck with them!" and then got hung up on! Is it really that simple? And now I'm getting collection notices which go into the file 13 category as soon as I see them.

IMO Chris King is a jerk, and Vickie, Kathie, Drew Frost, Alexandria,

AUTHOR: Pat - (USA)

I saw Chris King lie and imo do a lousy job.  He shoved his responsibility off on Elaine Scanlon. His Bible is better than everyone else's - just ask him and he'll tell you.

Drew Frost comes in late, leaves early, and spends long lunches working out.

Rob whateverhisname is, does that guy have any backbone??

That girl VP in charge of the mags does about the same.

Kathie seems to have done her best but remember she works for the company.

Brady - well many have said it, he was a bully.

AUTHOR: AJC - (USA)

I haven't read these for a while.  I think someone should update the "who's gone list".

Is that Chris King dude still there?  From my observation he was a jerk clown in my opinion that dude carried the good book but I saw many lies and he acted like a hypocrit - really he was both a nasty passive agressive and agressive person that stabbed good people in the back.  King is a member of the my religion is better than your religion club.

How's that new building working out?  How's the computer department doing - they were in the hot seat when I was there.  I was glad to see Brady and some of his bully bunch gone.  What happened to that Thomas Lord guy who is gone?

I look forward to someone doing some update here.  I guess the SSA union thing isn't going to happen?

Crystal is lying

AUTHOR: JadeMulatta - (United States of America)

I strongly disagree with Crystal. She is totally wrong and I do believe that like everyone else there she has no conscience. I do not agree with what she says about they are just selling...They are not just selling...they are harrasing and pressuring people to get these "discounted" magazines. I have been contacted by them numerous times and I have hung up on them numerous times. I was just recently contacted again and they would not leave me alone until I ordered some magazines...but I intend to cancel the subscriptions as soon as monday comes. They are a company of pathetic liars and theives and they need to be stopped.

ENTERTAINING WOW - read this whole posting if you have time - Is that Crisco Smegmat in Hood's hair? Does he need botox?

AUTHOR: Here's Johnny - (U.S.A.)

I was at NME too - but not for long. What a trashy outfit in my opinion. Like PT Barnum said there's a sucker born every minute and NME is there every minute to take their money selling crappy magazines. NME sells {or gives away} crappy magazines that no one really wants.

And it's true about the $535,000 fine they paid.

People don't be a sucker when you get their crappy mailer about a sweepstakes - hang up on NME or better yet don't call them.

NME paid a $535,000 FTC fine for bad sales practices and non performance, do not call, do not buy anything!

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

These people are agressive predatory magazine salemen leeches. These old postings are really funny to read! I should have read this before taking a job there. I have a real job now making twice as much. My friend up North bought these magazines and his wife was furious. He called and canceled. Anyone who says they are happy with the mag purchases is probably junk posting by an NME manager.

Loonyboy and Absolutelystupid and Starch and all the other morons are losers if they are still there and respond to this. It means they can't find a real job.

So here's an update of the who's gone list from what I see.
Scott Brady leader of the Brady Bully Bunch
Mike Capito the older CFO
Gene Gorbet controller and original first year employee
little big Bill Hood original owner
DAN Blumenthal, original Willis Stein rep (did Willis boot him?)
Jeffery Fix vp marketing
Thomas Lord the new cio
Dawn Russo vp
Chip Block vice chairman
Jack Linder vp
Leslie Stein a corporate attorney
Jim Shalale OneSwitch GM and his group
Sam Salvo an original vp
Chuck D Union Crusader and Combatant of Evil
Eileen Adams Super Union Crusader and Combatant of Evil
Edna and the list team
The cfo before Capito
The controller Rusty
Pat a Corporate Attorney
Suzanne the original attorney
Ginny VP Operations
Cindy the original CIO
Brady's numerous admin assistants

I got a real job and I am gone forever from this leech place.

Want your money back? It's EASY read this. And Ms K.kat you were targeted find out why.

AUTHOR: John Crusader - (U.S.A.)

Folks call customer retention (call the 800 or 727-524-3600). If you get someone who isn't helping, hang up and call again.

Ya know who else they target Ms. K.kat? People like you making "plenty of money" and loose spending it. You are a great target and that's why you got the mailer. You are on NME's marketing list and they are selling your name to the world as someone (a sucker) who likes to spend it.

Want you money back? Read the following data from employee yoyo1988.

We do have rules. When someone threatens to call the Better Business Bureau, Attorney General, their lawyer, or threatens to call their credit card company and reverse the charge we CAN NOT try and 'save' the account we have to go straight to canceling the account with a full refund. If someone does make a threat and we don't cancel the account we'll get in trouble. Q.D listens to random calls all day. Certain states have laws called 'cancel at will' where citizens can cancel at anytime. If the customer calls to cancel for the second time we can't work the account we have to cancel it. I got in trouble last week because it was their second cancel request.

'I'm an employee of the national magazine exchange, I work in the Customer Service department actually called Customer RETENTION, because our job is to get the customers not to cancel their account. We get commission based on 'cancel requests' saved. We are scripted and have certain offers we have to make. First we try and spread the payments out then give them 4 years for the price of 3....and so on.

For people turned into a collection agency tell them you cancelled or that you want to cancel as above. NME uses collection agencies as a bluff but hasn't turned people over to the credit rating bureaus because they do not want the law after them. Try calling back and demanding a refund. That will work and they will leave you alone. If a collection agency calls tell them you cancelled and they will close your account. BE FIRM. In 20 years NME has never reported people to the credit rating bureaus

Have a crappy day NME and BradyBullyBunch and Willis Swine.

I am happy with my magazines from NME. They did not rip me off!

AUTHOR: K.kat - (U.S.A.)

I was contacted by this company as any other has been. I ordered my magazines and I've been happy ever since then. I have added up the price of what I would have had to pay for the magazines that I ordered and I honestly saved a lot of money. I happen to enjoy STAR and that was one of my magazines. That alone would have eaten up the price that I paid for all of my magazines. My magazines all come in a timely manner, and I've never been contacted by them since my order.

I do not believe that they were out to rip me off.

I have one comment in response to one made by a gentleman. He said "SDP targets people who do not have the backbone to hang up. They target the elderly and lower income and lower educated people." Sir, I am not elderly, nor am I lower income, nor am I of lower education. I am an intelligent Registered Nurse with a degree in Science who makes plenty of money, and I am capable of making intelligent decisions about my purchasing.

GET YOUR MONEY BACK - read how. AND Frank and Robert you are morons.

AUTHOR: E F - (U.S.A.)

Frank you need a dictionary. And Right on Dilbert. And Robert is still a moron.

To get your money back read the following quote from Yoyo1988:

"I'm an employee of the national magazine exchange, I work in the Customer Service department. At work it's really called the Customer RETENTION department, because our job is to get the customers not to cancel their account. We get commision based on how many 'cancel requests' we save. If someone calls to cancel we have to save the account. We are scripted and have certain offers we have to make. First we try and spread the payments out then give them 4 years for the price of 3....and so on.

We do have rules though. When ever someone threatens to call the Better Buisness Boureau, Attorney General, their lawer, or threatens to call their credit card company and reverse the charge we CAN NOT try and 'save' the account we have to go staight to canceling the account with a full refund. If someone does make a threat and we don't cancel the account there is a good chance we'll get in trouble for it. Q.D listens to random calls all day and writes you up if you do something wrong. For example certain states have laws where if their citizens make any purchase over the phone they can cancle at anytime. Most people don't even know this law exists in their state. These states are called 'cancel at will' and if a customer lives in this state it will say it in red when we pull up the customers account. If the cusomers calls to cancel for the second time we can't work the account we have to cancel it. I got in trouble last week because I didn't scroll down and read all the times a customer had called and I didn't see it was their second cancel request.

I know a lot of people think this company is a rip off and I do feel bad for some of the people that get hassled into buying magazines that's why I'm writing this to tell everyone how to cancel and get their money back. However, the National Magazine Exchange is not a complete rip off. The sweepstakes is real. We have a new sweepstakes every two years. I've seen them give the winner their check and there's no way that could've been fake.

Our company does prey on the elderly and low educated. But if half the people who called into our company actually listened to what they were being told they would understand that they were placing a magazine order and their credit card was being charged. First people talk to the sales reps then they get transferred to the 'Verifier' who has to get the person to say yes to the magazine purchase 4 times before they can place the order. People pick 2-3 magazines then after the order is placed a computer program automatically pick 7-8 more magazines to add on to the package, but this doesn't cost the customer anything extra, and if the customer doesn't like the 'bonus' magazines they can call customer service and change them.

You do get the magazines for 1.29 a week. There are 52 weeks in a year so it comes to 67.08 a year, and we have 1,2,3 and 4 year packages. So a four year package could end up costing you 268 dollars.

Just to let everyone know, about 50% of the calls I get are unsatisfied customers who think we frauded them and the other 50% are very satisfied customers who love the program and are just calling to change their magazines.

This company does have a lot of benefits to people. You get 10 magazines a month for a total of 67.08 dollars a year. AND YOU DO ACTUALLY GET YOUR MAGAZINES. You can also change your magazines as long as you have 6 months left in the service. So I think it's pretty cool. You can try out a magazine for a month or two and if you decide you don't like it you can change it. We have over 200 magazines and we have a lot of the really popular ones. Just make sure you really listen to the Sales rep so you know how much money they are possibly taking from you. Oh yeah cause if you authorize them to bill your card they'll take out your payment every 30 days until you've paid your account in full. How much money they take depends on what plan year you're on and how they broke the payments up for you.

So remember listen to the Sale rep, and if you got hassled into buying the magazine subscription call customer service and tell them if you don't cancel your account you will call your lawer, the better buisness boureau, or attorney general. If you do that your account will be canceld and you will get all your money back

Hope this helps everyone! :)"

PS What's that in Hood's hair? Looks like dog smutz. Wouldn't want that on my shoes. Anyone have a picture of Scott Brady-talk about dog smutz!

Frank learn so you won't sound like a moron. Quid Pro Quo correctly explained. Folks read these postings and get your money back from NME.

AUTHOR: Dilbert - (U.S.A.)

Frank in simple terms quid pro quo means "something for something". Like a dollar for a newspaper. It IS NOT a form of sexual harassment as you suggest. Google it and read the wikpedia definition.

In the posting above it means a "posting for a posting" or rather "something for something". Ain't no sexual harassment there Frank.

Ya know what Frank - my sister gets her poodle shaved. You probably think "shaving your poodle" is also a form of sexual harassment.

Robert is a MORON. NME is an EVIL magazine sales company and they want money money money.

AUTHOR: SAM - (U.S.A.)

Robert why are you attacking EF? This confirms you are a Moron and you do seem to be raging. When you make public postings it becomes a public quid pro quo forum. There is no "period" and no "the end" when you make public postings. If you want it to be just your business then stay off the internet postings and keep your business to yourself. E J: Why are you obsessing over NME?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

You apparently need to get over whatever it is you need to get over with regard to your self-appointed role of "Bitter Opposer" to this company.

I don't care what you recall, I GOT 12 MAGAZINES FOR ONE YEAR FOR $67.08. My credit card will NOT BE CHARGED AGAIN UNLESS I LET THEM. It is MY decision.

Nobody is "stuck" with anything. I am not obligated for anything unless I willingly obligate myself.

And, last time I checked this is a quid pro quo thing--they gave me something (magazines) in exchange for something (my payments). Period. The End.

Furthermore, this is a FREE COUNTRY--are you aware of this? I'm beginning to wonder--with the freedom of choice whether to extend the subscriptions after the end of their terms. I was offered the multiple years and I SAID NO. Imagine that...if you're stupid enough (or love the magazines so much that you want to pay for 4 years worth of them) it is YOUR BUSINESS and NOBODY ELSE'S.

If you respond to a sales pitch anywhere and paid $5, $50, $500, or $5000 for an item, who presented the digits in front of that hard plastic thing with an expiration date with the MasterCard or Visa logo and caused that payment to execute? Who approved the transaction to go forward from your credit card account? YOU did.

COMPRENDE? Which part of this is such a problem that your brain cells can't process?

If I do get phone calls after 6 months about subscriptions at higher rates, LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY: I will say "NO, THANK YOU" and move on to the next thing in my life.

This is not a difficult thing. What is the matter with you??

Like I said Robert that's a load of crap.

AUTHOR: E F - (U.S.A.)

Waste of time answering your line items but wouldn't objectivity require a thorough review of the facts?

The normal sales package is 4 years which is hundreds of dollars and as I recall you only get 4 mags for 4 years and the other 8 are one year teasers even though you are paying $268.32. Everyone who reads this make sure you ask for Robert's deal and only buy one year for $67.08 and make sure you get 12 magazines you really want. If you got stuck with the normal 4 year package costing $268 call back and tell them you want Robert's deal.

Robert don't be surprised if in a few months you start getting sales phone calls to renew all those one year subscriptions at higher rates. And yes they can call you regardless of the donotcall list because you are an established customer.

Ha Ha enjoy those sales calls. It's gonna be like stepping in dog crap that you can't get off your shoe. By the way you are now on their customer list and your name is being sold to other marketing companies.

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

"Robert why don't you call back and try to get popular mags like People, or Martha Stewart, or Car and Driver, or Consumer Reports. They will tell you that those aren't available and they will offer something 'similar' - which are CRAP, which are mags with similar titles that the publishers can't sell."

RESPONSE: Actually, I did call them back because there were some bonus magazines I totally am NOT interested in and the response I got was "Sure, what would you like instead?"

"When (if) you get your 'bonus' items like the organizer or the watch you will find them to be CRAP! The watch costs them about $1 from Asia. So what and BFD since you just spent HUNDREDS on their crappy mags."

RESPONSE: OK--I hate getting junk of such low quality that they will fall apart in my hands and not worth the glue used to hobble them together. And, if they are in fact nothing but garbage, I won't appreciate how they were described in such glowing and glamorous terms. Having said that, they are FREE, so I'm not going to call out the National Guard on them. Besides, I did not order the magazines because of the watches and organizers...I ordered them because I like reading and I liked the reasonable cost (see below on the latter).

"Most people don't really need or want to spend hundreds and hundreds on crappy magazines when they have better uses for their HARD EARNED MONEY."

RESPONSE: What "hundreds and hundreds on crappy magazines?" I spent $22.36 X 3 ($67.08) for 12 elite, nationally-renowned award-winning magazines like Architectural Digest, Reader's Digest, Forbes, Conde Nast Portfolio, Road & Track, US News & World Report, etc., for a whole year. That averages out to just $5.59 a piece for an entire year each, or $0.47 cents each issue.

As a totally objective person (Not a DISGRUNTLED EX-EMPLOYEE nor COMPETITOR nor allegedly 'MISTREATED' FORMER CUSTOMER), I am certainly not going to complain about that.

New NME Customer

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

As a new customer who has started receiving his magazines, I must say that my experience so far is that this company is legitimate and statements made during my initial contact over the phone and all subsequent communications have been to my complete satisfaction and expectations.

I am a VERY skeptical and deliberate person. very careful to whom I give my business, especially over the phone or Internet. I had never heard of NME until I received a mailing with their offer. But, since I love reading books and magazines I thought I would call and see what they're all about. The persons with whom I dealt were very professional, articulate and answered my very skeptical questions very clearly; ultimately it was my decision yes or no whether to accept the magazine offers without feeling undue pressure.

I did get approved for magazines I didn't care for or ask for, but it was easy to let them know to switch to different ones. Once again, they were very courteous and expeditious in sending the form I needed to send back with the magazine changes. I was told I may get some issues of the unwanted magazines since they were already in the pipeline, so to speak, but not to worry and to keep them as a courtesy. And, indeed I have received some. No big deal--I can always give them away to someone who might like them.

I don't have the watches and organizer yet--but to the person who complained about never getting them: Did you send the paper back with your choices?

I was given the option of paying in 3 installments, the first payment being processed during that first phone call. When I agreed to go ahead and pay in full in one of my subsequent phone calls, I was awarded with a $50.00 Dining Dough gift card, which I received last week.

I've had problems with many companies--NME, so far, is not one of them and I thank all their agents (with whom I've dealt directly concerning several questions) for their very good service and support.

Buyers are Liars but their goal is to make the customers happy? WHAT?

AUTHOR: Rippedoffinpa - (U.S.A.)

"Because even though our motto is 'Buyers are Liars', our GOAL in Customer Service is to take each and every step required to make our customers happy and understanding everything. And we are always happy to take the time to explain anything you may have concerns about."

Having been in sales for the past 10 years selling everything from cars to insurance it amazes me how a number of employees are in one breath admitting that they call buyers liars, but want people to believe that they are also looking out for their best intersts and are happy to help them.

Who would want to buy from a company that thinks so little of the very people that fund their paycheck? Just get your magazines elsewhere if this is how much they think of you. Don't the employees posting here have a problem with this kind of rhetoric? Buyers are Liars. Disgusting. You would be NOWHERE without your customers. A real salesperson knows that.

NME will aggressively try to sell you magazines for $1.29 per week but it will cost you HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of dollars and they will try to sell you lots of other things like travel clubs. You will find it almost impossible to cancel.

If you are thinking of working at NME you better read through these Ripoff postings. What the ex employees say is true.

Everything that Chuck was saying is all true.

Your told to rebuttal them four time until they're blue in the face whats else can they do cause they don't see you. Your taught that "Buyers are lairs" and must attend a meeting every morning about how can you do better to follow the script. I was only there for two weeks and had to leave out of town because my aunt passed away. The reason they're always hiring is because being are leaving or quiting most folks don't even come to work a full week most just do the four days and sign up to come in early yeah they're letting me sign up on Sundays now to come in cause if you don't have a full 35 hours you will not get your comission,

Here is an even bigger rip off. You DO NOT have to buy the mags to get ripped off.

AUTHOR: Walt - (U.S.A.)

Here is an even bigger rip off. You DO NOT have to buy the mags to get ripped off.

The publishers get about $50 to $75 from the advertisers for each mag subscription they can sell. Probably more for a better mag.

The publishers pay NME about $5 to give each magazine away "free" as an add on. I have heard that NME gives away 5 to 6 of theses so called free mags per sale. Then the publishers collect the huge advertising dollars. Of course the profits end up in the pockets of management.

In the end we all pay more for any products that are advertised in the mags that people really DID NOT want to buy and really DO NOT READ. It is ripping us all off because the advertisers raise their prices to pay for the worthless advertising.

Here's to all you clowns at NME

Thanks for not being a hot and heavy response lets argue intelligently lol

AUTHOR: Zac - (U.S.A.)

I realize that but you know what I am a biling supervisor, and I am not agressive with my callers. I let those go who are not interested, I will do only what my job requires me to do. I stay nice with my callers, I know they say its hard to make it up there nice but I have shocked my supervisor over and over by being nice. Trust me I know the 2,3 or 4 consecutive monthly payments thing of 67.08. Why bash this? It is a great deal, and its not like the people have to take them for four years. We have just a years service which is still the best value out there. 1.29 X 52 = 67.08. Trust me I have had my skeptics and still do mainly about the upsell companies. I hate them. But if people do not want em just hang up please thats you telling us no.

If you get on my phone and just hang up on me without telling me no I will call back lol. Just say no is all i ask then hang up. I am not attacking the company I did at first working as just an SSA. and sorry but I have friends in sales and used to work at Sears and people did not make premeditated decisions to buy that big screen tv. More like apply for your card today and whatever you purchase will have 0 percent interest rate.... There are no hidden fees.. no cancelation charges, ok you might have to buy a stamp but other than that 1.29 is what you are at and nothing more. And yes people can pick bonus magazines, do the higher ups like it?

No, I do not think so and honestly do not care but I make sure my callers are set, I make sure every detail is gone over, and i spend more time on the phone with my callers but my conversion stays around 50 percent and I can feel happy, I am being recorded to make sure I am following precise procedures. So John with your permission we will process you magazine order ok? He says ok? John can I take that as a yes? "YEs" and if its a debit card now? John in order for us to bill these monthly payments to your Visa car please use your telephone keypad to enter the last four digits of the card you are using. Please enter the tones now.

If the person decided then to cancel he or she can. and my callers can have my employee number, my name, and the customer service number as well. Plus if your card does approve let me give your electronic authorization and let me make sure you understand how the payment works before I ask for any CC number. Keep all this information together with that mailer, try the service out remember you have 90 days from today, if your not completely satisfied just call customer service to cancel and you will receive a FULL refund and if so happen you cancel after the 90 days are over with YOU WILL STILL A GET REFUND FOR THE MAGAZINES YOU HAVE NOT EVEN RECEIEVED>>>>>> Get it? No I will say however many times, and you are just that insecure about using your card? Get a gift card you got from the mall, maybe a prepaid card one you know has no value to it. We can use that just to establish your account..

Zac people don't buy the magazines they are sold the magazines.

AUTHOR: Jake - (U.S.A.)

Zac I worked there too, long enough to see the place for what it is. Isn't NME just a confidence game? When someone buys a TV they are making a premeditated decision and SEEK the purchase at Circuit City, or Sears, or Wal-Mart, or Sam's Club and they ?buy? the TV. People do not make a premeditated decision to buy $268 in magazines, rather the magazines are shoved down their throat by NME. People don't buy the magazines they are ?sold? the magazines. Do you understand the difference? They feel ripped off because they DO NOT want $268 in magazines and feel pretty stupid for not hanging up at the beginning of the call. You and I both know that most people do not really want the "free" bonus mags that people do not get to "pick".

Hello fair and decent American citizens

AUTHOR: Zac - (U.S.A.)

Hello my name is Zac Goins. I am not afraid to throw myself out here. I work for SDP. I have been there for several months now. I think i know why people seem to think that they are getting "ripped-off." First I should examine this. I began as an entry agent. I remember how I fought in myself and gave a in-depth look into the company. I thought to myself am i ripping people off. I kept observing each of my own thoughts and carefully disecting them. Kinda like the aetheist scientists finds that there is a God after close studying and observation. I love the people who say, "yep," "yep," "yep." "You mean to tell me its not free?"

So my question to the caller is when is the last time you went to the store and someone said, "here you can have this." I do not intend on taking sides but I belive anyone who complains is just a flaming liberal who just wants to cry when they can not get there way. If any are conservative my apologies, mainly dealing with libertarians on this I realize. But people just saying look around your house see that big screen tv? Did you really need it? No, someone convinced you that you needed it. Its just sales if you dont like it hang up.

You know the place is just a con game. Buggy whips are a dime a dozen but that doesn't make them a good deal and your mags aren't a good deal either - who needs them - the mag industry is dying - pick up most mags and they are nothing but advertising - but that's the game isn't it - to get the advertisers to pay a fortune to the publishers - and the content is just trash anyone can get for free on the net - and SDP peddles the mags.

and what so hard about hanging up?

AUTHOR: Alexandria - (U.S.A.)

No, I like my job at sdp.. I have worked for only a couple places. 3jobs I would say.. since I was 15, I dont think thats unstable. And get it right its not $68.08 its $67.08. K?
These people aren't "warm and fuzzy" as you put it. They ask questions and ask more, some people like the deal others dont and hang up. Again whats so d**n hard about hanging the phone up? The people who sit there and just say yes all the way threw, whose fault is that? NOT mine! I am not going to sit there and say " HEY LISTEN NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND" I do that enough during my phone calls. I go over the billing quite a few times. More than I should, just so THESE PEOPLE will understand what they are doing.. and again if they aren't paying attention, not my problem. I am sorry I am not 7 years old, worrying about everyone else's problems. I got my own family to provide for. The customers who ask questions, aren't the ones complaining here.. The ones who PAY ATTENTION aren't the ones complaining.. its those who just dont give a $*%* are the ones who look at their statment at the end of the day, or the month and freak out. I really dont care what you or anyone else has to say about me, I just think its funny! To be honest with you, if I am on the phone with you and your yellin at me saying I dont want these.. I respond "then why are we even speaking??" and I transfer them else where. I dont waste my time on people who scream in my ear. I dont waste my time trying to make them feel "warm and fuzzy". I really dont care. I make commision or hourly... really I dont care. Its a paycheck at the end of the week and thats all I care about. I used to work in a whole sale lab, and I injured myself on the job, so therefore I must sit at a desk and work. And this is what pays me best, and I dont have to do much. Its the easiest job out there. And plus when you need a couple grand a week to get money to move outta state.. which is the best kind of job?? Telemarketing, at least I am not selling playboy videos at $300, and trying to "give" you a CC, but in reality, you are going to pay for it, and the telemarketing company already has your CC info, all they need is a "yes" so they can bank off of you. I can name off a whole list of "rip-off" companies out there, and this is legit. If it wasn't I really dont think the company would still be standing. The thing is, they follow the laws, and sending out mail pieces is legal, and people are stupid enough to think everything is for free.. it doesn't state "you've won" now does it? I dont think so. Everything we do is legit. There is a sweepstakes every other year, and how do we do the sweepstakes? Threw mags! Duh! Everything is legit, and that is how they remain a huge company. Do your research. And I believe 20years from now, the company will still be standing. Maybe not using the same tactics but they will figure out a way that is legit, and rightful with the laws. And 20years from now, people like you will probably still be whining and complaining that SDP/ NME is a rip off. And so be it. Non-legitimate companies dont stay for very long. lmao.. just thought you should know

Aren't they a confidence game?

AUTHOR: Walt - (U.S.A.)

Alexandria isn't what you and NME do called a confidence game that probably goes something like this? People call in thinking $2 million prize. They aren't thinking rip-off. You make them feel warm and fuzzy.

Congratulations, now let met enter your sweeps number. Wouldn't it be great if you win the money? What would you do with the money? Get them comfortable and gain their confidence. Get them to open up and repeatedly say yes. Travel they say, a new car, a boat, a house, golf. WOW that's great!

The caller is comfortable, they've been saying yes and dreaming about new stuff and reading off numbers like the sweeps number and their phone number so you can call them about the money. Start picking those magazines for travel, cars, boating, house and garden, whatever it's only $1.29.

Somewhere you go for the credit card number just another number and why not because they feel warm and fuzzy and you have been gaining their trust. Hmmm that's $68.08 for a year but it's their lucky day because you are now going to give them some additional free magazines (they don't get to pick those) and maybe a (cheap) watch or something. WHOOPS somewhere it became 4 years and 4 payments and now it totals $1.29 X 52 weeks X 4 years = $268.32. OUCH!! That isn't so warm and fuzzy!

Throughout this Alexandria is thinking she is talking, in her own words above, to an idiot and stupid person.

You have been called all kinds of stuff throughout this site, like rip-off and scammer and s***k, etc. I don't know the definition of those names. Isn't what you do called a confidence game?

I have worked at SDP before and before.. and actually a lot of the places that I go for interviews at.. doctor offices, whole sale lab companies .. etc.. it does look great on my resume.. maybe not for you.. but for me its done wonders.

See I work in verification.. I tell these people over and over agian how much it is, and go over and over on the upsales... now if they aren't listening, whose fault is that?? theirs. So if you go to buy a used car and they rip you off .. whose fault is that?? the dealers??

I dont think so. No-one is going to go say that they are a scam and a rip off. Thats their job!
I love making the money I do at SDP.. great pay.. and again if these idiots are stuid enough to pick up the phone and call and pick out mags and then give out their CC number.. thats their fault.. Not mine NOT the companies! You have never dealt with telemarketers before? Or maybe collections?? They wont take NO for an answer.. they probe and probe and probe... some people give money and others hang up! Whats soo d**n hard about hanging up the phone?? If they dont want it then say no. or hang up the d**n phone.
I dont see it as me "ripping people off"
To be quite frank.. a lot of those magazines are VERY popular!! In all the stores and everywhere else! If the magazines we sell aren't as popular either.. then why do most people already subscribe to them? Answer that.

Now, most people that have a problem with this company and its employees is, either the ones who worked at SDP and got fired or it just wasn't a job meant for you. The other type of people are the ones who dont listen during the confo and just say yes yes yes and give out their CC number and yes yes yes all the way threw. And when they see the charge, they freak out, because they didn't listen. Now if I am a "s***k" for thinking like that then so be it. To be frank, you dont know me, or the people I know, and the supervisors and managers, because noone is "s***k" as you put it.

Scamers

AUTHOR: Red - (U.S.A.)

I worked for SDP (special data processing) witch is the company that owns National Magazine Exchange. All that do all day long is try to scam people who don't realize you don't have to buy mag's to enter or with the 2 million. Its a really sad way to do business. I couldn't take it, im pretty sure i signed something saying i wouldn't bash there company so i haven't used my real name on this site.

They tell you do what ever it takes to get these poor people to get the mags, they tell you to just keep reading them lists till they pick 2 mags they say badger the hell out of these people, just keep reading and reading till they pick, its sad.

Its a huge rip off if you do agree to there mag's, there "free" watch and the mag they throw in for "free".

They practice bad business and everyone who gets something in the mail that says they could win 2.1 mill (strike it rich sweepstakes) don't call in they will try to scam you to. Someone really does win the money, but the contest isnt for more then a year.

Its sad because they have you ask peopel what they would do if they won all that money, and most people will tell you and from that question alone your told to profile the person on the phone and pick what mag's to try and push to them.

AUTHOR: Pete - (U.S.A.)

Alexandria the only thing in your posting that makes any sense is your last statement which says I am confused! You are definitely confused. Don't work at SDP too long cause it looks pretty crappy on your resume and work history. Let me clarify you work for a predatory high pressure fast talking s***k organization and most of Tampa knows it. Half those magazines are junk that publishers can't sell at any price so NME gets them for free or negative remit. You got one thing right YOU ARE CONFUSED!

I consider you and SDP to be BELOW dancers. When someone goes into a club they know they are going to spend a few dollars and on what. When someone calls you at NME they do not plan on spending HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS on magazines and upsells. The dancer clubs are just as legal as SDP and far less deceitful than SDP. And the clubs don't say come on in and win $1 million dollars. If you are proud of working at SDP then you are just as deceitful, etc. It takes skanks to run a s***k organization.

I have read d**n near all of these

AUTHOR: Alexandria - (U.S.A.)

and you people are crazy!
I proudly work for NME also known as SDP, I dont rip people off, I just put your money in my pocket.. hahaha... I just feel like being a smart *&* since people say things like we are 'rip-offs' and we are 'pigs' and we are 'scum' and we are 'illegally selling magazines'... and blah blah blah. And we should all be shot... and why doesn't John and the CEO along with the rest of the 'pigs and scum' run and hide... well here's one for ya!

We have been here since 1984, 1985, '86, '87... and all the way to... 1999, all the way to 2000, and gee look at us now.. its the year 2006, and only a couple more days to 2007. Do you really think that we will be going under-cover any time soon? People say things like we rip you off... and you can get your subscriptions threw the publishers cheaper.. haha.. let me know what publisher that is.. cuz.. you get 5-10 magazines.. depending on the package, for only a $1.29 a week. That is $67.08 a year.

And other people are saying... 'OH I HAVEN'T RECEIVED MY WATCHES AND ORGANIZER THAT THEY PROMISED' *tear* that is for you! If you would have paid any attention, you would have known that when you get your conformation letter to check the boxes for which of the watches you wanted, and check the box next to the electronic organizer, then MAIL THAT BACK TO US IN THE SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE.

As far as the At Home Rewards and the gas thing.. we tell you that UNLESS YOU CALL AND CANCEL YOU WILL BE CHARGED THE AMOUNT TO THE CARD YOU PROVIDED! And we have to get a yes. And you would have had to say that in order to get that, and have it charged, you are also given a number to call and cancel, if you didn't do so, your fault. We also have a toll-free number you call and cancel the magazines. If you didn't get it, and you want to cancel, its simple, pick up your phone and dial the same number you called when you got the magazines and ask them for the number, they will gladly help you.

The people who say, 'OH I CANT READ' That is bull, you really think we are stupid dont you? If you couldn't read then how did you read that toll free number to call us? How did you read your entry I.D. number to us? And when we are pitching the magazines, and you turn around and say, 'OH WELL IT SAYS RIGHT HERE: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY'... How did you read that?
It is not our fault or the companies that you people get these things in the mail and call and PICK out the magazines, then GIVE us YOUR credit card number.

Then when you hang up, you realize that your the dummy, and want to blame us for your stupidity. And I do have a conscience, I am only human, I have to provide for my family! When someone has children they have to provide a roof over their heads and food on the table; its okay for stripers and hookers, but when a legitiment company is willing to give you as much money, and you get to be respected and keep your clothes on; people degrade you. You people are the pigs and scum! You people have nothing better to do with your lives other than to degrade people and try making yourself feel more superior.

You live in the Real World, you cant say you never have ripped someone off, or done something to provide for yourself and your family and pushed someone else's needs aside for your family. And we aren't ripping people off, we are giving you a great deal that cant be beat, like I said, when you cant get 7subscriptions somewhere for a lower rate than ours let me know, and that is from all different publishers, not just one! Let me ask you one more thing... where is the scam??? Multi-Million Dollar Publishers risking their reputations on a SCAM COMPANY??? Explain that one to me please. Cuz I am confused!

Bad try Bob. Bad spin Bob. And hey Rhiannon???

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Bad try Bob. Bad spin Bob.

Since you brought it up maybe you can explain in detail just exactly how you think NME/SDP took responsibility for the upsell that led to them being fined $535,000 by the FTC? Did NME refund the money people paid on the upsells you made? Answer is a great big NO. So just exactly how did NME take responsibility?

Bob how good is your research? NOT TO GOOD! Explain to us what difference it makes who the script author was? You USED the script didn't you no matter who wrote it. It was NME who pitched and made the upsell. If you put any and all script writers in one of your separate side companies that wouldn't relieve you of anything because you are still using the scripts ? your argument is pretty thin ? rather non existent.

Whoops is this too strong for you and considered blindly bashing? Why is it when people point out hard cold facts you NME employees repeatedly call it blind bashing?

Hey Rhiannon three thoughts for you.
1.When working at the restaurant please don't forget to wash your hands.
2.Proof you work before you send it out.
3.Lastly I like your idea ? Hey Everybody JUST HANG UP.

what does rip-off mean?

AUTHOR: Rhiannon - (U.S.A.)

There is a difference between rip-off, scam, and illegal. A rip-off is not always illegal. And NME is NOT a rip-off. If you look at it JUST as the magazines 10 magzines, 2 watches, a personal oprganizers, and the ablity to have 90 days money back is NOT a rip-off.

Like I said before you have over 300 REAL magazines to choise from, Time magazine, better homes and gardens, cosmopolitian, good housekeeping, Hot Rod, Popular mechanics, popular science, Saturday Evening Post. Go take a look at those magazines and how much it would cost to subsribe to ALL of them at once. Than through in the abilty to CHANGE them to another magazine at ANY time UNLIMITEDLY through-out your subcribtions. That is not a rip-off. If you feel they do it by tricking people by calling does not make the magazines themselves a ripp-off.

And yes you are an idiot if you think by calling someone that sent you a letter like we send that they won't try to sell you something. This is America. And america's are losing their common sense. Most end up suing busines because THEY themselves don't have commone sense. (the idiot who sued the car company because he took his hands off the wheel while in cruise control, the fat people who sued McDonald's because THEY ate all the fatting food, and many other examples.)

And NME is a business. If you got a major problem with them take it to the federal government. We recieve a handbook stating what we HAVE to state in every call, and what happened in settlements through NME so we are aware.

Like I said before....

1) don't call anything you don't remember submitting yourself to.
2) Give your id number state you want to be taken off the list and HANG UP.
3) Don't like what you hear than HANG UP.

If you don't hang up, telemarketers no matter WHO you call or who calls you will not stop pitching!

Now like I stated lastly in my other message, come on John trying to know me down! I work two jobs to make a living, and NEVER work at a place I don't like. I love the magazine deal, and am made I myself (simply because I live in Florida) can't receive the SAME value that we offer the callers.

Have any other questions, find the main phonenumber and ask questions yourself.
I now have to leave for my other job at a restuarant.

Nice Research, RJ.

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

"The FTC did fine NME(sounds like ENEMY, that's interesting, don't you think?) for unscrupulous business pratices which the company continues to do today."

I'm glad you did some really in-depth research there, RJ! Because if you ACTUALLY did some research, you would know it was for a SCRIPT that A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COMPANY wrote, and WE TOOK RESPONSIBILITY FOR. It was a script for an UPSELL, which is an additional offer given to people before or after the magazine sale. Nice try though.

I'm also sure you are going to say something witty like "A fine is a fine." or... "An infraction, is an infraction!".

Get over yourself.

By the way, Thanks for your awesome researching skills, and your fantastic ability to blindly bash SDP.

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Anna your response makes no sense. NME/SDP has historically NOT DONE business in Florida and you list your address as Florida. GOTCHA. You must be in management and your entry is what I like to called "seeded". If they are now doing business in Florida are they collecting sales taxes? If they aren't the State of Florida's tax auditors are going to have some audit fun. I have read that Florida also has other issues with this company.

Your entry is so full of fallacies I am not even wasting my time addressing them.

By the way I wouldn't call a $525,000 FTC fine a "small problem". Anyone who reads through the entries on this site can see what NME is really like.

AUTHOR: Anna - (U.S.A.)

Wait a minute I bought magazines from them and was happy with the magazine package and even took one of the affiliate offers. By the way I'm a telemarketer and know the industry and the tricks compared to places where I worked this company is very professional. No one put a gun to my head and although the free watch sucks the magazine offer is quite good. Not perfect but they don't offer adult magazines that is kind of is bad if they did that they could make lots of ups I suspect. But its a good deal and I recieved most of my favorite magazines and deal with one company. Want to go after real crook what about Punlishers Clearinghouse they to me are ten times worst.

I must note they will even set up mags as gifts and send those to charities I sent one to a local womens shelter out of the package. I just gave them the name and address and they set it up.

Stop treating people like children as a rule they are running a perfectly legitimate business and save for some small problems are operating legally. And when they get into trouble they pay for it but by and large I can't find major serious complainsts with them like other companies. As long as they send out the magazines, watch and enter folks regardless in the sweepstakes its legal don't you get that?

Stop calling mail peice respondents idiots!

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

The whole idea of the mail piece is to get people to call in WITH OUT THINKING. YES people (victims?) call in to you ? that's because it's the reaction your mail piece is designed to elicit. You are aggressive predators and the callers are your prey. When some one gets mugged the mugger can't say ?but you came into my alley?. You can call what you do ?work? but in my opinion you are not working ? you are a hunter chasing prey. Do muggers call it ?going to work? when they head out to do their deed.

Not nice of you Rhiannon to resort to calling everyone ?idiots?. But that is the SDP/NME way ? you people resort to insulting your callers if you don't get your way and get into people's wallets.

And stop all this crap about how the mags are a good deal. Bull ? most of those mags are zero remit and NME pays nothing for them. A good deal would be if the publishers gave them to everyone for free the way they give them to NME for free. You people get something for free and then sell it to callers for hundreds and then claim it is a good deal. BULL. Why don't you GET OVER IT and stop kidding yourself when you go to ?work?. This space is too small to explain to everyone the entire mag industry scam ? including NME's role.

Get over it....

AUTHOR: Rhiannon - (U.S.A.)

1) nothing is FREE. Thinking you can just call it and get a chance to win 2 million dollars without even being asked to buy anything makes you an idiot!

2) We DO NOT CALL YOU. You called SDP and that is why we are talking to you.

3) There are over 300 magazines to choose from. How come no one mentioned this before. Included but no limited to.... Diabetic cooking, Popular science, popular mechanics, Redbook, Seventeen magazine, Cosmopolitan, and like I said over 290 others. Pick 6 magazines and figure out how much it would cost to subscribe to all of them for just one year!

4)You have a 90 day money back promise. If you cancel mid-90 days you will still receive at least one issue of the magazines you picked PLUS the three free gifts for trying the program.

5) don't like the magazines you picked... CHANGE THEM. It's called the Reader's Exchange Program. Call customer service and just change the magazines you already recieve. Think you are getting too many magazines DONATE THEM. I used to be a two year old teacher. Teachers love to put magazines in front of the children and allow them to flip through them. NME allows you to mail those magazines right to the daycares or schools or churches.

6) Don't want to receive any mailers from NME call, GIVE THEM YOU ID NUMBER. Without that number they can't take you off the list. They don't know who you are. Tell them after you give the number you want to be taken off the list. This will ONLY stop NME from sending you mailers not every other company that sends junk mail.

7) We do NOT have your credit card number already. The first person you talk to only asked if you still carry your credit card, not what it is. Only after you hear about the magazines and go to a "supervisor" are you asked for your credit card number. We don't aks for it and than sell it, we don't ask for it than magically have the magazines show up at your house the next day. ASK for the customer service number in the beginning.

8) Magazines don't show up over night. First NME has to send your address to the certain magazine you want than THEY mail out the magazine to you. So it does take 4-6 weeks to receive the magazines. And that is at least a month before the 90 day risk free trial ends!

9) The people who call get alot better a deal then the employes. my husband picked out 14 magazines. Even if I was able to get the list down to just 7 I'd end up paying MORE than the exchange program costs. Plus I wouldn't get the free gifts OR be able to exchange the magazines as many times as I would like to. The employee discount is nothing like the program that the callers receive.

10) Don't like the rebuttals HANG UP THE PHONE! What do you think will happen if you don't? You called us remember? After confirming your phone number we clearly state, "Your entry is complete and registered" Than we go into the magazine offer. After hearing that HANG UP! Hang up before that if you'd like. But just giver your ID number. If you don't want to hear from us again say "put me on YOUR do not call list" We can NOT add you to the national one. You need to do that yourself.

11) Is that enough information for you? About to attack me now right? Well list to this. I'm 22 years old, married and will be moving to Orlando in a few months. I work at SDP to pay the bills til I move. I also OWN my own business in my free time and work another job. I also do not work at a job I don't believe in. (Trust me I worked numberous jobs since I was 14 only 2 lasting more than 6 months.) And I do not have stock in SDP. Don't own any stock at all with any business.

Now I have to leave to go to work.

What I meant by "bashing" was......

AUTHOR: Rj - (U.S.A.)

Thomas, I apologize for the confusion. What I meant was the personal attacks on each other at this website. You can bash this company as much as you want, they deserve it.

My observations..

I have been doing some research into this company and what I have discovered is disturbing to say the least.

The FTC did fine NME(sounds like ENEMY, that's interesting, don't you think?) for unscrupulous business pratices which the company continues to do today.

In addition to the FTC filing charges, several states have filed lawsuits against ENEMY and they are/did win. They have been banned from doing business in those states by the states Attorney General!!

Why would an upstanding company with nothing to hide have 10(that I know of) different business names, I wonder? Why would any reputable company not only encourage but force(i.e. if you don't do this you will be fired) it's employess to PISS the cutomer off.

At most companies, the job of a customer service rep is to provide support, services and knowledegable information to the customer and to ensure the customer walks away feeling good. But not at NME, keep pitching those magazines until you the SSA/Verfier turn blue in the face AND force the customer to either yell at you or hang up.

I also find it interesting that the majority of the customers are either elderly or disabled. Can you really sleep at night, Jennifer?

I am not attacking you personally but I really think you need to investigate the monster you are working for.

The magazine offer is valuable, in and of itself, if you WANT to buy magazines but the tactics to get that UP is ridiculous!

As I said in my previous letter, the customers cannot cancel their subscriptions, money is being taken out of peoples accounts before the requested time frame, and there are no free gifts.

Anyone who has been ripped off by this company should file a report with your states Attorney General, the FTC, the FCC and get a lawyer. You will win!!

They paid over $500,000 settlement/penalty/fine/consumer redress to the FTC. They are banned from some states. You should have been shown a letter or form from the FTC to inform you about the payment (SDP will claim that it wasn't a fine - but they paid it). They lose thousands of emplyees every year. IMO a horrible place. Good luck to you.

Where can I find the truth about this company w/o having to read the bashings?

AUTHOR: Rj - (U.S.A.)

I have been with SDP for a little over a month. Like Mike from Palm Harbor, I too have a conscience and there are certain people I will not sell to. So far, I haven't been reprimanded for it. The first time I am reprimanded for not selling to someone who is 80plus years old, living on social security and can barely see let alone understand what I am saying, I'll quit.

I became suspicious after only a few days on the phones. Customers were calling in with some very interesting reports. Like they CANNOT cancel their subscriptions and that most of them have never received their free gifts(not that I believe their missing anything with that) or money was taken from their accounts before the date promised which caused them to be overdrawn.

All I want to know is, where can I get the truth about this company?

If, what I have read on this website is true, I will no longer be employed with NME. What is this profiling your talking about? Who are they profiling and why?

Verifiers, know this, as an SSA, I do have to say FOUR rebuttals which to me IS badgering! I can understand 2 even 3 sales attempts but the 4th is pushing the envelope.

Marketing is providing someone with goods or services they desire. Big of you to admit that you prey on the elderly and lower income and lower educated people that aint marketing. Does SDP/NME still use that ridiculous sales training slogan Buyers are Liars? That doesn't sound like marketing and it doesn't sound nice or helpful or supporting it sounds aggressive and predatory.

You people are aggressive predatory salespeople who bombard people with four rebuttals when they repeatedly say NO. I wish every state would pass a law that NO means NO and that you can not bombard them with repeated rebuttals. Why do you think that SDP doesn't sell in every state? I can answer with a BIG YES!

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

"Would you sell these magazines to your grandmother for hundreds of dollars? Would you give your grandmother four rebuttals?" YES!

"would you spend hundreds of your hard earned dollars on magazines?" YES! and I did.

"Every sale that you make ask yourself if you feel good about it when someday that person may need that money to take care of someone in their family that gets ill and they wont have it because they spent it on a bunch of magazines that are now in the trash." I personally get about 30 magazines a month. Most on health and fitness and news. If I can buy a magazine that I can get useful info from that can help my son, then I don't believe that it is a waste. What other service can you change magazines mid stream? And at this rate. If that family can't afford the the program then they can call and cancel. Again they hold the power. They can get a refund for the magazines that they haven't received yet.

"SDP targets people who do not have the backbone to hang up. They target the elderly and lower income and lower educated people. SDP does not mail to high income highly educated people because they will know how to say no and hang up" I get hung up on several times a day. You make us sound like drug dealers. It is called marketing. Do you think Kia dealers advertise in upscale markets? No! Do you think Bently dealers market to middle class familes? No!

I complete my day secure in my life and happy that I could bring someone a little value, and bring some cheer to them.

"Remember there is never any purchase or payment required to enter or win any of our sweepstakes. Thank you for calling in today and I wish you the best of luck"

WOW - did SDP change their policy and give in to employee demands? In 2005 SDP TOOK AWAY the telemarketer's insurance. That's why a lot of people left a year ago. Talk to someone that was there in 2005 and you will confirm what I am saying.

Every word I have said I would say to my grandmother. Would you sell these magazines to your grandmother for hundreds of dollars? Would you give your grandmother four rebuttals?

Jennifer ask yourself this - would you spend hundreds of your hard earned dollars on magazines? The people you are selling to also make very little money and also have family illnesses etc. and they really do not need to spend hundreds on magazines they would never buy on a trip to the grocery store.

Sorry about your family illness. Every sale that you make ask yourself if you feel good about it when someday that person may need that money to take care of someone in their family that gets ill and they wont have it because they spent it on a bunch of magazines that are now in the trash.

Telling me that I said to "Help and Support" and that I work there was funny. That is an insult, in a mild form, but an insult. I happen to a very nice person and take my time to make sure I address everyones concerns.

Anyway please think before you type and remember that these are people the same as you that you speek of, if you would say it to your grandmother don't type it!

The insurance is a PPO, and the last time I checked that was insurance.

I have been reading the posts, and I have seen many conversations stating that we should be ashamed and we are horrible people for working at SDP. That seems to be bashing to me.

As I look at my dying son I realize that it is better to foster good realtionships with evereyone you meet, you never know when life may end.

Jennifer we are simply stating the FACTS about SDP/NME. It doesn't make us feel better and it's not a waste of time. Why are you upset if we state the FACTS? No one is bashing any human beings we are stating the facts.

Why does your company lie to people by promising the ability to get a refund and then refuse to give the refund?

By the way what you have IS NOT medical insurance. It is a medical payments plan which IS NOT insurance. Check it out.

Here is something that is important in life it is NOT wasting hundreds of dollars on magazines we do not want and do not need. The money can be better spent elsewhere.

Here is a fact NME is an aggressive magazine sales company. People don't buy magazines they are SOLD magazines there is a difference. Read the endless postings about how this company treats its customers and employees. IMO - It is a joke that you say you want to help and support people and then you work at SDP.

Wow! What a waste of time

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

All I can say to all of this is... Do you have nothing better to do than to make yourselves feel better than someone else.

I am currently an employee at SDP. It's a job that allows someone with little education to make a living wage as long as they follow policy and commen since. There are not a lot of companies out there that provide medical insurance after 30 days.

I have a very ill child and I just wanted you people to think about what is truely important in life. Bashing other human beings for trying to make a living or living life to the fullest.

When my son passes away, I don't think that I will be proud of how many people I can put down, but of how many people I can help and support. That includes people with differing opinions.

Can we agree to disagree??!!!

Istead of spending hours posting hate on this website about things you probably will not change, go hug a loved one and explain to them how you feel about them.

Call your bank. Charge them back if you used a credit card. Complain to your state's attorney general office that they did not honor the 90 day refund and that you never received the "free gifts" - which by the way most people feel are just cheap junk.

This company is notorious for giving people the "run around". They make millions of dollars by getting a few dollars from millions of people.

Why does the Audit Bureau of Circulation allow these people to sell magazines this way?

How do I cancel my subscription

AUTHOR: Maria - (U.S.A.)

I feel so stupid for falling into N.M.E.'s trap and signing up for a 3 year subscription. They had told me that I could try the subscription for a 90-day risk free trial (plus they were going to send me three gifts just for trying this service, which I have never seen). They told me if I wasn't satisfied I could call and cancel and they would refund my money.

After trying their service, I realized that I no longer wanted it, so I called to cancel. The sales representative would not let me cancel. He told me that because they pay for these subscriptions one year in advance and I couldn't cancel. I asked him about the 90-day risk free trial and he switched the subject to different payment options. I repeatedly told him that I wanted to cancel, but he refused. He told me that the most he could was to reduce my subscription from 3 years to one year and push out my next payment by one month.

I know that the NME people think I'm lying because I'm a buyer. However, can any NME employee please tell me how I can cancel my subscription??? What do I have to say besides repeating myself that I would like to cancel? I am going to try calling again and if they still won't let me cancel, I guess I'll have to go talk to my bank.

Last time Charles

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

Charles, this will be our last exchange. You begin to remind me more and more of a boxer who answers the bell by just swinging his arms hoping he will land one. Forget it.

"Why didn't you share when NME/SDP used the 2.29 rate?"

Charles, if you want me to be your tutor, it will cost you large dollars. Typical SDP employee, too lazy to research the TRUE practices and history of your company, this is why you look like such fools when you respond. No perspective. Your precious company has had many DIFFERENT price points over the years some even HIGHER than $2.29 per week, they have even varied by department. Three years ago it was .99 cents per week, how's THAT for a deal Charlie?

"Chuck who cares about the turn over."

Any legitimate employer. It costs more to TRAIN employees than to RETAIN them. How can you promote a sales force to higher positions if they don't stay? Then again SDP philosophy dictates that you don't have to give benefits to those who do not outlast their 90 day "probationary period", right? THAT is the sign of a BOILER ROOM, fast buck, no future.

"In my opinion its because people try telemarketing for the 1st time @ SDP and decide its not for them."

Charles, your opinion is worth no more or less than anyone else's, present company included. The good part about your conclusion may be that it drives them out of telemarketing altogether for a REAL job with a REAL future.

"Lets stick to current events. Dredge up the past some where else."

Charles a company, like an individual has a history, the running total of which forms its "Character". By seeing what something was, you can see rather clearly where it may be going as long as you look at its overall history and not just pick the parts you like. For example let's take "Star Wars". If you just looked at Episode One, would you have believed that 10 year old Anakin Skywalker would be Darth Vader by episode Four?

The present Charles is DEPENDENT on the past, and the future depends on BOTH. Such perspective properly applied also allows for change, positive OR negative in people or organizations. SDP has that choice everyday, so do we.

When you get a little more experience in life, you will come to appreciate the quality and PRICE of redemption.

Good Bye Charlie.

Charles says "who cares" - well Charles a lot of us do care

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Charles you say, who cares about the turnover? I'll bet the thousands of unemployed ex SDP employees care. Gee, are you actually stating that SDP doesn't care?

NEXT - Charles this is exactly where the facts need to be dredged up whether PRESENT OR PAST. We have all heard that the past (history) is bound to repeat itself. Anyone paying attention knows that SDP/NME received a FTC fine of over $500,000 for its practices. And next you will spew to us about how it was someone else's script and that the violation was on an UP sale and not on the magazine portion. A violation is a violation and a fine is a fine.

Also, the price testing is all over the map and an ongoing constant practice don't imply that SDP only did one test and that it was at $1.61. How do you know that that poor guy wasn't a victim of a $1.89 or $1.99 test?

OK Charles, let the dance continue...

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

Ok Charles, let's do it again.

#1 You are to full of Malice.
Unfortunately for you Charles, my malice as you put it exists for a reason, is accurate and your constant defense of these people makes you full of something else.

#2 You state: "...TSR might slip up and tell an inconvenient truth." <--- I like how all of your counter points are just an appeal to authority. You almost never follow up with a legitimate factual piece of information. What is NME hiding by using the scripts??? IT IS TRUE THAT THE SCRIPT GOES IN GREAT LENTH OT EXPLAIN TO THE CUSTOMER WHAT IS GOING ON. If its not Chuck? What are we hiding?

Not hiding in so much as exaggerating or not revealing all the facts for the real reasons; for example, the line the Sweepstakes is held primarily for major credit card holders is a lie, the SWEEPSTAKES, BY LAW, is open to anyone who calls in, that statement is designed to set up for the next question about the carrying of a current credit card, CORRECT?

The REBUTTAL regarding phone numbers is an outright lie, that is designed to give information to the marketing partners all other correspondence is done by CERTIFIED MAIL, right Charles? Want more facts? Contact the Oregon Attorney General and ask him about such things as obeying the TSR Laws of the states in which you want to do business, etc..

#3 You state: "...4 rebuttals..." <--- It's 3
Our mutual friend told me that 4 were now required, if it has been changed back to three I stand corrected.

#4 Ad Hominem... "I already knew you have never heard of Outbound." <--- I was trying to help someone out, NME does not make outbound calls to random people out of the blue, they do not buy lists, call people, and pitch magazines. THEY CALL CURRENT CUSTOMERS.

That is not the truth Charles. They also call those who said no, those who cancelled, those who CLAIMED no Credit Card and those who lapsed. They also both buy and sell lists Charles, even though NLE (National LIST Exchange) no longer officially exists as they were absorbed by Willis, Stein. They make HUGE amounts of money in the list business. They are CONSTANTLY buying new lists to keep their database fresh. It has also been reported that they run soft credit checks to find potential new customers that way.

#5 You state: "Don't you just HATE how the bonuses keep slipping by every year..." <--- This really has nothing to do with the product we sell and its quality. The Pay reduction affected my paycheck by less that 5 dollars.

If you truly are not in management, then the question regarding the bonus would be without meaning to you. Ask your Manager. As a verifier if your check was ONLY changed by $5.00, then consider yourself one of the fortunate few. How many people, both labor AND SUPERVISORS walked out a few weeks ago because of their pay? Are you telling us they were being unreasonable?

Tell me Charles, JUST HOW MUCH money are they going to have to rip YOU off for before you begin to get a clue as to the company's real moral center $10.? 20? 50? What is your limit? How much financial sodomy will you endure? Fifty cents is too much for me. And why do you employ misdirection and launch into product defenses all the time? I was referring to morale and how that can effect Customer Relations.

*The sweepstakes is Real in Texas too.
REALLY? When was the last $25,000. Win a Dream Sweepstakes winner drawn? I would like to know. No one else in the company seems to know, do you? They possibly wouldn't have drawn the last Million Dollar winner last month, had I not brought the lack of a winner to the attention of a few of those three letter Federal Agencies that love to drop by SDP from time to time.

*Magazines are a great deal, no matter the magazines you chose. No matter what the company pays. There is absolutely no Combination of magazines you can chose and get a "bad deal." PERIOD. Prove me wrong.

I have NEVER said the magazines are a bad deal so stop acting like a simpleton and putting words in my mouth Charles. I simply stated some deals are better than others, such as a package of weekly magazines versus a package of magazines published say, quarterly.

*I don't know why your hell bend on asserting that information is left out or any aspect of the presentation is not explained. I challenge you EXPOUND on what exactly is left out.

You are repeating yourself Charles. I answered that one earlier - discussion ended.

*Ad hominem...AGAIN. "Now go report back to Bill and Brady, wag your tail and get your treat." I've never personally spoken to either of the mentioned. In fact, your Friend and mine, Karen (the "Union" supporter.), inspired me to surf over.

I can't say if you do or don't. I don't care, get your treat from whichever master you answer to there.

((Side Track)) I asked Karen if she could change anything what would she change. She said, "When I get taken to be disciplined I want to take a witness." Which basically translates to taking a friend to watch. Either way, the witness is partial and the legitimacy of any claim Karen makes is not strengthened.

Then why not allow it Charles? Why do you defend the practice of your co-workers being ganged up on by Management without a means of self-defense. The Company you love so much consists of cowards in Management positions.

Which basically translates to taking a friend to watch

NO, it is a WITNESS to prevent the company from lying! Why not give people copies of disciplinary reports? Why not give employees the option to actually confront their accusers? Why have TWO SEPARATE SETS of personnel files? Why profile and harass employees? Why don't they get copies of their own timesheets? WHY Charles???

========Rebuttal Two========

Remit... What the company pays has no bearing on the quality of the product. The package is amazing, simply put. what the Fast Food restaurants pays for its burgers, fries, and drink is drastically less than what it charges. The Focus is on what it charges... The rate at which NME sell its magazine package cannot be beat.

And Your point is?

Caveat Emptor: The axiom or principle in commerce that the buyer alone is responsible for assessing the quality of a purchase before buying. Let's let the buyer decide. Well even go with the base 5 (Customers really end up with 10 magazines.) 5 Magazines for 1.29/wk the ability to change the magazines at any time and at no extra cost, for any reason. You get Maxim, you don't like it, switch.

And your point is? (Interesting no mention of Buyers are Liars isn't it folks?)

MATH TIME

I'm going to put together a random scenario.

Magazines...Newsstand per issue...# Issues in 4 yrs...Newsstand price 4yrs... sub-rate subscription cost 4yrs

Better Homes...$3.50...#12...#48...$168.00...$95.80

JANE Magazine...$3.50...#10...#40...$140.00...$40.00
Road and Track...$4.50...12...48...$216.00...$40.00
Home Magazine...$2.99...#10...#40...$119.60...$48.00

Totals:
Cost per issue Newsstand: $17.78
# of Issues per year: 96
# of Issues for 4 years: 384
Newsstand Price for 4 years: $1,327.92
Sub-rate Subscription Cost for 4 Years: 489.00
NME PRICE FOR 4 YEARS: 268.32

And your point is? For the 50th time Charles, I have NEVER said the magazines are a bad deal. This is the LAST time I am addressing that issue with you, pay ATTENTION. Incidentally, the company's actual COST for any package regardless of how many magazines is STILL $6.00 or less. I am a Capitalist Charles (WITH that capital C) I do not begrudge companies a profit, not even SDP.

I am going to ignore much of the rest of your diatribe and skip to the bottom, it is either repetitive or simply a jumble of meaningless phrases and incoherent conclusions.

I'd support the Union myself, but there's no point. NME is better than most companies.

Charles, now you have REALLY stepped into the Twilight Zone. If you really believe that you must be VERY inexperienced in life, naive, clueless, wet behind the years, or, forgive my bluntness, just plain stupid. SDP has one of the worse reputations of any employer in the Tampa Bay area hands down, call the Division of Consumer Affairs, FTC, the State Attorney General, do not take MY word for it. No company that is worth a d**n has to run quarter page ads in the St. Petersburg Times looking for employees EVERY SINGLE WEEK. No, Charles they are not expanding, they wouldn't be renting out space within the building if they were. Take one of those verifier paychecks of yours and buy yourself a clue.

Even Karen was at a loss for the great and magical benefits we'd get. I've never been mistreated in anyway, and I personally know a bunch of supervisors/managers/trainers and they seem like awesome people to me. And everyone I talk to has had only good experiences. I'll ask Karen what's happened to her when I see her.

You will have to Charles. I cannot and will not speak for Karen, she knows how to access this site. And she more than knows how to speak for herself.

Off the top of MY head, I'd go for benefits of Unionization with, real health benefits like those the company ONCE provided, stable wages, no employer harassment, end of employment at will, worker rights, the right to bargain collectively, no favoritism, Weingarten Rights in disciplinary hearings, retirement benefits, genuine grievance abilities but again that is only off the top of my head.

Chuck it's not as bad as you say.

Charles, you cannot and will not speak for me. I have FORGOTTEN more about that company, its operations, its practices and its philosophies than you will EVER know.

I hope you don't get an ulcer or something.

Turnover is over 400% per year. Sounds bad. SDP issues thousands of W-2's every year to ex employees. When I was there SDP issued almost 5000 W-2's and there were only about 1200 employees. Sounds bad. Average employee stays less than 60 days sounds bad.

Charles I did not read that long posting - too boring.

In response to your earlier posting I will say the following to discredit your comment that "no one pays $400". The prive point was once $2.29. Lets see now: $2.29 X 52 weeks X 4 years equals = $476. So you see Charles there was a price when people paid over $400. SDP/NME is always testing the prive point up and down - and you should know that. I have seen it as high at $2.29 per week and as low as $.99 per week. So there you are Charles - YOU ARE DISCREDITED AND THAT PUTS DOUBT ON ALL THE OTHER THINGS YOU SPEW. Sad, but true."--Bob no one pays $400 for their magazines and I think you know that, in fact, the MOST someone can EVER pay is just over half... 268.32 And that's for the four year option (which isn't the ONLY option.)

Naughty naughty Bob, you made a math error of $131.68, be fair, your statement should have read "Unfortunately, there are too many gullible people out there willing to spend $268.32 for magazines while Bill Hood makes millions a year. Sad, but true."

Does that correction make the statement more to your liking now Charles? Let's make it even MORE accurate and state that the Company's COST for that package of magazines is SIX Dollars or LESS per Y E A R!!!

*Larry - Warren, Ohio
1. You said: "But I shouldn't have to give you my telephone number to get the information. I am on a DO NOT CALL LIST."--Larry you don't have to give your telephone number to get information, in fact, you don't even HAVE to give the ID number on the mail piece. Just ask Questions when you call...

And then Larry, you will be read a canned explanation of the Sweepstakes while they pry out your ID Number. YOU MUST tell them to put you on the Don't Call or Mail list or your personal information will be sold EVERYWHERE! It would also be ill-advised to give a phone number. That will also be sold AND go to OUTBOUND (know about them YET Charles). "Winners" (do not hold your breath) and such are communicated with via U.S. Mail.

2. You said: "That would make me a "BUYER". That does NOT make me a "LIAR"."--Allow me to expound. The Phrase is a teaching tool, Its not an official SDP phrase, more of office jargon.

CHARLES! EXPOUND THIS, after that one, you are really going to need a Pinnochiotamy. That is THE phrase that is GROUND in to every last potential SSA that walks into the place! I am surprised they haven't chiseled it over each entrance into the building yet (rather like Dante's Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Herein as you appreciated my earlier metaphor). That phrase ladies and gentlemen is the very soul of SDP along with "Caviat Emptor" around which lies their view of Customer Relations.

And lose the idea that Magazines are HAMMERed into someone, all three attempts polite and have no malice.
Attempt 1: Re-Explaine the Magazine Pitch
Attempt 2: Ask what the customer likes (perhaps the list of magazines you read contained nothing the customer liked)
Attempt 3: We can renew your current subscriptions if you have any...

Charles that is another exaggeration if you are a verifier probably a verifier SUPERVISOR and TRAINER (YES?) what happens if your conversion gets below a certain level? Back to SSA land with that wonderful pay or out the door.

There are NOW 4 attempts folks, and the SSA can be FIRED if they treat you with respect and honor your first NO. That is what I call BADGERING, not the Company's version where they target specific SSA's for from time to time if they don't like that SSA or they are one who is trying to Unionize the Company.

Now on a personal, more serious note. If you are the same Charles, the Verifier Trainer/Supervisor that I have known for years, know this, we have been friends or at least friendly acquaintances for several years now. I always admired your professionalism and product knowledge, your magazine descriptions were top notch, that is why Salvo and I wanted to involve you with the test team a few years ago. I have always believed you to be honest and truthful in your personal dealings. Stop apologizing for and playing for the Bad Guy's. You have never struck me as the sort who would trade upon their personal honor to turn a blind eye to oppressive, megalomaniacal behavior in exchange for a paycheck. I used to believe the same thing about J.C. Unless you have been burying your head in the sand for the last couple of years, you know the horrific things those bastards have done to the workforce. I do not mean me Charles, I really have gotten my pound of flesh and then some. I didn't simply go renegade in 2003 Charles, nor did Eileen, these people were doing serious wrong and I wouldn't just stand back and watch it. Malcom X once said "A man who believes in nothing will fall for anything." I KNOW you to be better than this. IF you are the Charles I knew.

If not, permit me to quote Rosanne Roseannanadana (the late Gilda Radner)..."NEVERMIND!"

And least, but probably not last, Charles

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

Ah, another company apologist who thinks he can dance around the truth AND lecture me. Where DO you get these narcissists from Bill or is it Scott now?

And last but NOT least: Chuck.
*I'll start with the "Million Dollar Question" comment. Its use is to uncover interest to better tailor a magazine package. NOT soften the pitch or give False hope et cetera.

WRONG Charles, that was almost a direct quote from the man who wrote it, Sam Salvo, remember him? Same guy who wrote the Silver Bullitt rebuttal, former VP of Sales you know, another company loyalist who was thrown under the bus after showing tremendous amounts of loyalty to the company. When on the test team in 2002 we eliminated the question, but it was insisted by higher ups that it be re-included as a psychological trigger to enhance a customer's belief that he or she can win and then make them more susceptible to the magazine pitch. True conversation with Salvo and then VP of Sales Mark Allen, not my opinion. Incidentally, your comment Its use is to uncover interest to better tailor a magazine package. That ISNT a way to ease into the magazine pitch?

*2. Scripts are used in practically EVERY telecom based company, as they should be.

Most HONEST Company's, the ones that are not being constantly sued or investigated, allow for the personality and the input of the TSR, and are not structured like a straight jacket to insure they do not slip off the razors edge where the TSR might slip up and tell an inconvenient truth. Yes certain phrases and qualifiers have to be included to satisfy TSR laws, but when it comes to EVERY SINGLE WORD and inflection, the rationale must be questioned. I find it amusing that you did NOT argue with my comments of the brain deadening aspects of that job.

By the way Charles how DO YOU now require 4 rebuttals and still write people up for badgering, or is that just for the pro union types?

*3. The health insurance offered or the 401(k) plan , or the size of the paycheck I make, whould have nothing to do with the decesion making of a consumer. And most Small businesses don't even offer such programs, but offer great products...

Well Charles, you just betrayed your Management position. I already knew you have never heard of Outbound. Any worker who defends his or her exploitation is either a fool a slave or a w***e. Of course you don't care about THEIR paycheck or benefits. Don't you just HATE how the bonuses keep slipping by every year because of all those pesky Lawyer fees?

You think substandard wages and benefits don't have a direct effect on productivity or morale? Then you are the PERFECT SDP Manager/Supervisor - clueless.

Please just stick to the facts and stop cheaping the reason this website was created.

Charles, I ALWAYS stick to the facts which drive you and the rest of the sycophants in that place CRAZY. I stick to the inconvenient facts from your point of view, like right and wrong, moral or immoral, ethical or unethical, legal or illegal. And unless you are the Editor or founder of this website, I will leave it to them to determine whether or not I have cheapened their website, I know that you and the rest of the SDP bootlickers want me to leave. Well, you can keep dreaming.

"Sweepstake is real."

Except in Texas.

"Magazines are a great deal, no matter the magazines you chose."

Depends on the remits Charles, you do know what remit is don't you?

"And no information is withheld."

As long as the information is beneficial to SDP/NME.

Everthing is explained in great detail.

Everything Charles? You might want to rephrase that.

By the way nice use of the "The Divine Comedy" to compare SDP to Cocytus. Which is an incorrect analogy, because its nothing like SDP at all, NOT EVEN in the slightest.

I know that Charles, I was being kind.

Now go report back to Bill and Brady, wag your tail and get your treat.

I am sure we will be speaking again.

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

No Larry, they will not sell you one magazine for one year. The structure of the organization is to sell magazine packages, where you can leave with up to five or six. Their real profit lies in "upsales" where you also buy in to vacations, discounted travel etc., from their various "marketing partners" also from Willis Stein. This is done much the same way as getting onto a website and being deluged by "pop-ups" before you get what you are really after.

Your premise that the place is populated by "slick" salesmen is also groundless. Every remaining shread of originality, creativity and independence on the part of the telephone representatives was wrung out of that place long ago.

It is a factory styled operation based on a piece-work labor model with set production and time quotas. These people are not people to management, but cogs in the machine - literally. These people are script readers and rebuttal vomiters only, from the SSA who enters you into the sweepstakes to the so called supervisor who so graciously relieves you of your credit card information while mumbling about your weather to distract you.

Every last word is tightly scripted except for the inane "million dollar question" which some genius wrote ages ago with the theory that it is going to make you believe you can win the sweepstakes to soften you up for the magazine pitch. In other words in my experience with them, they structure the script on the premise that you are a moron. They are taught from day one to permit absolutely no periods of silence, otherwise your brain might suddenly re-engage.

Think of it Larry. People reading the exact same words a hundred times a day up to seven days a week (week after week) after daily mind-numbing, soul destroying team or company wide Rah-Rah sessions to whip up enthusiasm from these poor souls to make Bill Hood, and soon just Willis Stein lots more money at their and YOUR expense...sort of like being in the 9th circle of Dante's Hell, isn't it?

Add to that INCREASINGLY diminishing wages, a bonus system that is a joke, a paranoiac, insecure, dictatorial management team dedicated to screwing the employees out of their pitiful to begin with paycheck, no benefits that are worth a d**n...get the picture? Every sale they make is insurance that they get to keep their precious jobs for one more day. After all that Larry, how much would YOU care about the caller? Perverse isn't it?

Do yourself a favor Larry, unless you are really one of those people who will stick a knife in your leg to find out how much it REALLY hurts; fill out the card in the magazine and get your year.

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

I went to this site to investigate whether to spend my money with this company or not. What I read leaves me to wonder if the company is reputable. Their reputation in my eyes, would depend on the responce I get, based on a consumer's perspective.

If I want a subscription to ONE magazine, for just a year, can I order that magazine at a discounted rate, from this company?

As a consumer, I realize that these companies dont offer sweepstakes just for the heck of it. There is no free ride. The sweepstakes is a marketing tool to draw our attention to the product you offer. When I receive the advertisement in the mail, stating that I might be a millionaire, you got my attention. But I shouldnt have to give you my telephone number to get the information. I am on a DO NOT CALL LIST.

I am interested in buying a magazine. That would make me a "BUYER". That does NOT make me a "LIAR". I personally dont appreciate some slick salesman trying to push something else on me than what I truly want to buy. I understand you have a pitch that you have to read off to me. I am a patient person and I will allow you to go into your sales pitch, then I will respond with a yes or no. But if I say no the first time, the answer is no. I am a customer, not an "UP". I should be treated with respect and my potential future business dealings with N.M.E. or any other company has to be "earned".

So, the questions are: Can I buy just one magazine for only one year? Can I be treated with respect? Do you want to earn my business?

As for the "slick" salesman comment, I hope no one takes personal offense. I dont mean you any harm, slick. I too am a salesman. The difference between us is, I try to earn my customer's respect and trust before I earn their money. It works, too. I have successfully supported my family for over 15 years in sales.

Snappy retort Ashley, however....

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

just like everyone else who has tried to climb on their pathetic little soap box to lecture me, you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about so you substitute swagger and typical SDP arrogance for facts.

First of all, anyone who hangs onto a job in the midst of not one but at least a dozen pay cuts is probably not terribly intelligent, or has something in their background preventing them from getting a better job. God knows the number of places within a 10 mile radius of where you work that pay better. Guess what? Some of them even treat their employees like PEOPLE!!

"I never claimed not to be lied to by supervisors but it basically comes down to this... either you can do your job, or you can't. If you don't like it, quit." What is your excuse Ashley? Do you like people lying to you?
A person who allows people to lie to them and let them get away with it is again probably not terribly intelligent, has something in their background preventing them getting a better job or is a sycophantic idiot/glutton for punishment.
You may wish to see someone about self-esteem issues.

"They obviously said "bye-bye" to your "below room average" conversion, otherwise, why mention it." I mentioned it because you lied to the person you were rebuttaling in your previous posting. You also exaggerated the hell out of the pure and wholesome motives of your job. The same with my reference to the jewel thief, your baloney-o-meter was almost off the scale at that point. If you are interested in facts, (which I really doubt as inept attempts at character assassination is more your style) my conversion was between 35 - 40 per cent, I was on the test team run by Sam Salvo. I FORCED the company to terminate me Ashley by revoking my permission to monitor my calls. Dave Macey's merry band of peeping Tom's in QD were attempting to profile me because I had told management to clean up their act and I would not engage in deceptive or dishonest business practices. I called the tune Ashley, not SDP, ask Robert Moravek, unless he has finally taken my advice and headed for the hills. You see Ashley, I refused to lie, I refused to be harassed, I refused to be misused, I refused to be treated as a cipher, disrespected, cheated or stolen from. I also refused to do it for lots more money than you are making now. If you choose to accept Corporate disrespect that is also "your business". Again though, you may wish to see someone about those esteem issues.

If you find SDP more convenient than the medical field, I can understand that, SDP requires no thought, no self reliance, no pride, no professionalism (any more) nothing than the willingness to accept programming and to temporarily deaden your intellect to read their mind-numbing scripts and vomit out their rebuttals on cue. A willingness to have "flexible" ethics does not hurt either. Ashley if you jump on those credit cards with the same enthusiasm as you jump to conclusions, you must be highly successful, careful they don't write you up for "badgering", oh that's right they now save that gem for the Union proponents these days don't they? Unfortunately, for all your enthusiasm you are probably not as financially successful as I was there. The pay back then was such that I could earn a very substantial amount in no more than 37 hours. Try that on your pay. If you are going to pander yourself for the company, at least do it for decent money!

As to J.C., I have known him since 1991, we sat together in verification, which if you actually did speak to him, you would have known and he would have told you about our mutual friend as I suggested. Never engage your mouth in front of your brain Ashley you just end up embarrassing yourself.

Why was I there at the time? Two simple reasons: first; the pay was still decent; second the job was and still is a no brainer so it provided me with the time I needed to become self-employed. Unfortunately, I was not aware of how far the company had deteriorated ethically, but soon found out. I AM glad to hear though that they no longer deal with no rebuttal states, I doubt they could afford too many more fines that they got from the State of Oregon or from the FTC for their ill-advised partnership with Trilegent ($500,000. is not chump change) which also I do believe lead to their loss of One-Switch and how many millions per year profit???

Now, go back to your Verification playpen, work another 60 hour week, kiss butt properly and quit presuming to lecture the adults. Give my regards to JC and that Ray guy who I met a few weeks ago in the SDP cafeteria after...well, that's another tale.

Thanks for the "education" Chuck...

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

... however, its not necessary. FYI: I AM a college graduate. Obviously you didn't do very well as a verifier, because even with the "diminishing" pay, I still make money. Don't hate just because YOU couldn't hang.

I never claimed not to be lied to by supervisors but it basically comes down to this... either you can do your job, or you can't. If you don't like it, quit.

As for "no-rebuttal" states, if you were so keen on YOUR information, you would also know that we don't pitch to "no-rebuttal" states. If I could be prosecuted, why is it that anyone hasn't? See above.

Thanks a bunch for your kind words of encouragement, Chuck, but I have already worked in the medical field and at this time, SDP is more convenient for many reasons that basically aren't your business. So before you go degrading people for being employed by SDP, remember YOU were there once. Obviously couldn't deal with the pay cuts, for whatever reason, but it doesn't affect me or my paycheck. If you drowned by losing a dollar or two a sale, then you shouldn't have even been in verification in the first place, go back to SSA land.

And as for... "Yes Ashley the magazines are a good deal if the right ones are selected":

Even if the right ones are NOT selected, who really cares if all the customer has to do is call customer service. That's what they are there for.

"(Conversion is the total number of sales as a ratio to the total number of calls or UPS sent by the SSA, if they fall below a certain percentage, bye-bye)":

Thank you also for the lesson on conversion. They obviously said "bye-bye" to your "below room average" conversion, otherwise, why mention it. This, perhaps, is why you are so bitter at the rest of us who are trying to make a living, like you are. If YOU are so "educated", why did you "lower" yourself to SDP?

As for the "jewel-thief"... there lies another problem with YOUR conversion. You are so into everyone else's business that you can't concentrate on your own. I am not a "jewel-thief", therefore I guess I don't have to worry.

And speaking of J.C., maybe you should have monitored him and you wouldn't be so bitter about the paycuts because I doubt J.C. is struggling, or else he would no longer be with us. SDP obviously did the right thing by saying "bye-bye" to Chuck.

And don't tell us about the free stuff - the total cost of that "free stuff" is about $10 on a sale of $hundreds$.

Education for Ashley

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

Yes Ashley the magazines are a good deal if the right ones are selected, so let's be totally honest.

First of all folks Ashley is the supervisor of her headset, and that is all. She is called a Verifier in the company, which was once also my job. Her job is that of a closer, to get that credit card from you or (reluctantly) to send you to pay by check. She closes you, she gets rewarded (by a increasingly diminishing pay and bonus schedule, they just took it in the shorts again yesterday). She is referred to as a "Supervisor" by the SSA's in the transfer to make you think you are speaking to someone with authority.

"How do you think NME (can)afford to give away 2.1 million dollars every two years?"

By purchasing an Annuity at a fraction of the cost, which is why the payout is 2 Million if taken incrementally and not in the lump sum.

"We have a responsibility to provide serivce (sic) to our customers."

As a Verifier Ashley, your job depends on your conversion, always has, always will. (Conversion is the total number of sales as a ratio to the total number of calls or UPS sent by the SSA, if they fall below a certain percentage, bye-bye). Therefore her statement "We are not out to "get you" or your money."; should be viewed with a certain amount of...skepticism.

"Our company does THOROUGH background checks on all billing supervisors."

Only as far as necessary to receive bonding for the job, and then not in every case, I knew of several GLARING exceptions. One for example, a Verifier I worked with was an ex-jewel thief who did heavy prison time. Don't believe it? Ask J.C. Ashley, he knew him as well and he will tell you all about him.

I for one feel that Ashley is sincere in her beliefs, what is incredible to me is the small number of people who STILL wave the SDP flag while being mistreated, lied to, harassed, profiled and ripped off themselves. Some people are so insecure that they feel the need to toady themselves to management for a pittance of a paycheck, with no benefits and no future. Once, I could understand it the pay was good, but now?? Come on Ashley, do you really think you can do no better for yourself than SDP? Some people will also believe anything they are told without question by "authority", even though they are only told half the story. For example Ashley, were you ever told about "no-rebuttal" states and how YOU personally could run the risk of prosecution should you run afoul of the TSR Laws of other states?

Of course it is possible that she is also a supervisor, currently in favor with management, trying to provide spin, who can tell.

Look at the facts...

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

I am currently a billing supervisor for National Magazine Exchange.

The sweepstakes IS legitimate. How do you think NME afford to give away 2.1 million dollars every two years? Yes, we do sell magazine packages. We offer 3 magazines and a diamond quartz watch. If you choose magazines, you get sent to me.

You aren't being charged a penny more than what you are told. The paymnets are on a consecutive monthly basis, which is explained to all of you... ALL you have to do is listen to what is being said to you. Why is it that we are scolded and "should be shot" for customers negligence?

We have a responsibility to provide serivce to our customers. We have many customers who are happy with their service. Yes, our pitch is a long, tiring process, more for us than for you, but we make it worth your while.

By the time you hang up, you get 5-11 subscriptions and three free gifts that you get to keep even if you cancel. We do give you a full refund if you are not happy within the first 90 days. If you are so unhappy, cancel. We are trying to make a living like everybody else in this country and why should we be "shot" for accepting the credit card number that YOU provide us with?

Our company does THOROUGH background checks on all billing supervisors. We are not going to misuse your credit card, you will only be charged what YOU have agreed to, whether you realize it or not. If you listen to what is being offered to you, you wouldn't have any complaints. If you are unsure of something, all you have to do is ASK.

We are not out to "get you" or your money.

What SDP does is prey upon people who don't have whatever it takes to hang up when you try to extract $268 ($1.29x52weeksx4years) for a bunch of magazines they wouldn't normally buy. Most people would never walk into a store and purchase $268 in magazines - especially the ones SDP sells you.

Magazine Prices and Cancellations

AUTHOR: Liz - (U.S.A.)

Yes, NME sells magazines. And the magazines are sold at an INCREDIBLE rate. It is how they pay their employees, pay for the $1,000,000 sweepstakes, etc. It's a business just like any other.

For those that don't read magazines, spending quite a bit of money up front isn't a good deal. After all, a good deal is only one that saves you money, not makes you spend it.

However, most people DO read magazines, and this is for THEM:

Anyone who reads magazines on a even semi regular basis has noticed the ever increasing price of magazines, ranging anywhere from $2 per issue to $7, or even $9.

Personally I picked up about 6-7 magazine's a month, which didn't sem like much since I was just tacking them onto the end of my grocery bill. But when I did the math... around $30 a MONTH at the publishers price. Not to mention the newstand price! Instead they offer you a rate of just over $5 a month for the same number of magazines!

I am a Customer Service Representative, and yes it IS our moto that "Buyers are Liars." Why? Because customers call to cancel, state that the person that placed the order is now dead (even though the order was placed 3 hours ago), then when put on mute they laugh to their friend or partner that we "fell for it."

NME is not trying to scam anyone. Nobody forces anyone to give their credit card information over the telephone. If that were possible, we would all be broke. Giving your credit card information and authorization takes a conscious effort to get up, walk to your purse, or grab your wallet then read the 15-16 digit number and expiration date.

*** THE $1,000,000 SWEEPSTAKES IS LEGIT AND BY LAW NO PURCHASE IS NECCESSARY ***

Which means that there is no reason to give your credit card number to someone unless you are making a purchase.

Processing an order from NME requires the representatives to have certain things that only the consumer can provide:

1. A clear and concise "Yes" after explaination is given.
2. The 15-16 digit credit card number.
3. The credit card expiration date.

Therefore, providing authorization for NME to bill your credit card.

Unlike sweepstakes companies who, although they said no purchase neccessary, made it obvious that purchase IS required in order to be entered into the sweepstakes (by throwing out entries with no purchase attatched)... NME will and DOES enter people into the sweepstakes without ordering. Once the sweepstakes ID has been entered, NOBODY can remove you from it. Which means... if you don't purchase anything, you're still in the sweepstakes!

How this is a scam, I will never know.

If you are confused about your order, feel that pricing/payments are too high, or would even like to add/exchange magazines for others that you would like better, simply give Customer Service a call. We are paid to help YOU. It is the only company that I have ever worked for that does not have a time restriction on customer service. Because even though our motto is "Buyers are Liars", our GOAL in Customer Service is to take each and every step required to make our customers happy and understanding everything. And we are always happy to take the time to explain anything you may have concerns about.

Not about the magazines

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

Why is it people cannot respond sensibly when presented with the fact of teh magazine sale, they just become abusive. I no longer work at SDP, so I have no axe to grind. True it was a sh*t job but so are most telemarketing jobs. I was an SSA then a verifier then a sales auditor, so I saw (heard) what was happening on the phones more than most. I never did or said anything illegal. Neither do (did) 99.99% of the verifiers I audited. I heard 1 call during which the verifier sold to a mentally impaired caller. I wrote him up for it. As it turned out the callers guardian called the same day and the subscription was cancelled without question.

It amazes me the number of people who "say" they tried to cancel. You do not have to try to cancel. Just call and say cancel my subscription please. It's as easy as that. Most people assume they've been scammed, after all, no one would give out their credit card information over the phone to a complete stranger of their own free will, would they????

Chuck, you know as well as I do that the case you mentioned has NOTHING to do with magazines it was an upsale and the script and responses were provided by the other company NOT SDP. True SDP works up to the FCC regs and will not go further. i.e. they do enough to avoid prosecution. But its NOT a scam. Do you picket all the gas stations gouging prices in Florida....

Like I said I no longer work there, my only beef (apart from abject boredom) was the pathetic excuse for benefits. It took me 2 weeks to find a Dr that would take the medical ins. ALL others had never even heard of it. So I have no loyalty to SDP, I never even SAW Bill Hood ( he doesn't call the shots anymore anyway . The people that work there are just trying to get by, they are not doing anything illegal, they just have bills to pay like the rest of us.

Me, I've got a good job with proper benefits now. SDP was a waste of a year out of my life but I met some (most) good people.

By the way Chuck, you were right about the profiling, never dealt with it myself, but I saw it done..........

You can do that until you're blue in the face.

But, nobody here will ever believe you.

All you do is keep the complaint fresh and right in people's faces.

So, keep sending your stories in. People need to see it and read about your scam before they get any crazy ideas about buying any of your phony magazines.

Any Questions

AUTHOR: Chuck - (U.S.A.)

To the company apologists and a*s kissers who see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil; the following is an FTC press release from Oct 2004:

"...FTC Obtains Consent Order Against Marketer of Triad Buying Club

Special Data Processing Corp. to Pay $535,000 for Consumer Redress

Under the terms of a consent order announced today, Special Data Processing Corporation (SDP) of Clearwater, Florida, agreed to pay the Federal Trade Commission $535,000 for redress to consumers to resolve charges that it misled consumers about the Triad Discount Buying Service (Triad) it sold to consumers. The proposed settlement, which requires court approval, also requires SDP to comply with the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR), prohibits the practices challenged in the FTC complaint, and requires SDP to make certain affirmative disclosures and to obtain consumers' express informed consent before charging their credit cards....."

All the innocent sounding "who?? MEEE's??!!" in the world do not abrogate facts.

Another fact, want to shut them down? Stop thinking that you can get something for nothing. There are no free rides, no free lunches, no Santa. THROW THE MAIL PIECE OUT. DON'T EVEN CALL IN. That will stop it once and for all. Greed must be fed in order to survive.

Now consider that you end up with SEVEN magazines, all for 67.08 per year. 67.08 is less than HALF of 7x20. And Reader's Digest is a cheap magazine. How can it possibly be a scam? All they do is trick you into buying magazines for 10 times the normal subscription price.

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

Isn't that the American way of business now?

Why in the world would anyone want to call the magazine's 800 number and have them start your subscription and then bill you?

Or, maybe you could go to a newsstand and pick up one of the blow-in card and fill it out. They are post-paid.

But, why would anyone want to do those things?

Wouldn't it be much better to call this fraud and pay 10 times the normal price?

That way, this idiot would have money for lap dances down at the boy-lesque club, plus he could afford to keep coming here and saying duh, where's the fraud?

Easy folks

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

I work as a billing supervisor for the company in question. A few things...

1) The sweepstakes is fully legitimate.

2) It's "Buyers are liars." We ask specific questions in the call. People don't listen, and so when asked later, they give a contrary answer. For instance, if you don't have a credit card, you won't be transferred to a billing supervisor. However, lots of people say they a credit card, and then when they get a supervisor, "I didn't tell them I have a credit card!"

3) Payments CANNOT be processed unless YOU give your account information. BEFORE you are every ASKED for your billing info, you are informed SEVERAL times that you are PURCHASING a magazine package.

4) Every sale is RECORDED and AUDITED. If you do NOT provied your EXPLICIT consent, the sale is cancelled, and you are NOT billed. We have a list of specific, acceptable "yes" words which MUST be given in response to certain question during billin confirmation. Everything is explained to each potential buyer a MINIMUM of two times during confirmation.

5) We are only required to attempt a sell THREE TIMES, NOT FIVE. If you don't like being sold to, try hanging up the phone. If you can't figure out that someone giving away a million dollars may try to SELL you something, you're a disgrace to American common sense.

6) There is no "left out" information. I am familiar with all of the various billing scripts in use. The only "difference" is that the verifiers and billing supervisors tell them the total cost of the package and the payment plans. However, they tell them this BEFORE they request any billing information!

7) Depending on which way you pay, you end up getting, essentially, either 5 or 7 magazines for the price of ONE.

Now, where's the scam?

We don't make these people buy the magazines we offer them to them if they want them great if not thats good too the reson we give them rebuttels is just like with anything else most of the time they only hear about half of what you say.
