I regularly bought several magazines that they offered, so I thought, what the heck...If this will save me money, than why not? The polite gentleman on the phone informed me that "they", (the company), would throw in several additional magazines at NO CHARGE to myself, just for accepting this great deal that they are offering, and for being a new customer.
I was then transferred to another employee of NME, where I was pretty much forced into accepting several other magazine subscriptions at NO COST TO ME, and even though I stated that I was not interested in these other magazines, I was told that " that is no problem, because once you join, you can switch out these absolutely free magazines for the magazines of your choice", and that there is a huge selection of magazines to choose from.
So now I have subscribed to about 12 different magazines, although I am supposedly only paying for about 4 of them. And remember, I can switch the promotional free magazines at any time to the magazines that I do like, and I am also now eligible to win a million dollars now. All they need is my checking account number.
I ask the gentleman on the phone about 500 times, " Are you SURE that I won't be charged for anything else, do you PROMISE that those other magazines are really FREE"? He assures me, and asks if I would like to pay at once or do monthly payments. He repeats the magazines that I ordered, and he words it in a way that makes me believe I am only ordering one year subscriptions to the magazines of my choice.
About one month later, I receive my "Welcome Package", which clearly states that I have 1, 2, and 4 YEAR subscriptions on about 12 assorted magazines, including the magazines that were forced on me, supposedly for free. The letter also includes the web address that will enable me to "switch" my magazines at any time, no questions asked, including all of those free magazines that I didn't want in the first place. So I immediately go to the NME website to switch out those free magazines, and I am informed that I cannot pick these magazines because "they were just added today"...Okay??? I figure that maybe that is true, so I wait, and every few days I click on the mags that I do want to switch, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
To this day, I have only received a very small portion of the magazines that I ordered, switched, or was offered. I ended up opting for the 2 month payment plan, and like I said, I believed I was paying for one-year for my mags, but the Statement showed that some magazines were for 4 YEAR subscriptions!!!! And, get this- only weeks after the initial phone all, another gentleman phones me from NME, asking me to DOUBLE MY SUBSCRIPTION, to make it 8 YEARS!!!!
I ended up paying roughly around $400.00, for 12 separate magazines, and while I "switched out" the mags that I didn't want to mags that I was interested in, out of all 12 subscriptions I have never received about 8 of the magazines that I ordered. I receive mags that I never ordered and weren't even part of the free deal, and whenever I call the 800 number, I am always given the same answer, that it may take up to 8 weeks for the companies to get it right (?), the website is clearly cheap and I highly doubt that anyone even monitors the site, so I am just screwed and stuck with stupid magazines that I didn't want because I am NOT able to switch at anytime, like they promised. I never, ever received more than half of the mags that I PAID FOR, although I supposedly have a 4 year subscription to them.
I had to just admit that I'd been scammed out of $400, and hopefully this story will prevent anybody else from being scammed from the NME, ( National Magazine Exchange). Just go straight through the magazine itself, and not through some subsidiary or affiliate that promises steep discounts.
