In February I booked a dive trip for July 10-17 and in early March purchased travel insurance with Travel Guard, thinking I was fully covered. The Dive Charter company went out of business in May, and I lost over $2,000. I reported this to Mercury Claims, which is a division of Travel Guard, told them what happened and supplied all of the requested information. When I did not hear from them after a month, I called and e-mailed the claims person and was told that I did not have coverage because I did not purchase the insurance within 15 days of the date of my deposit. The condition was buried in the middle of the policy terms (27 pages worth), and was never made clear at the time of purchasing the insurance. This company appears to be an expert in hidden gotcha's and should be put out of business for actually trying to get away with this kind of crap. They self-rightously refer to their terms and conditions and say they are sticking to the strcit terms of their policy. This kind of sharp practice should be stopped by a massive class action. I will never deal with them again.

To clarify this, the complaint is with Travel Guard, which is an affilaite company of Chartis - formerly an AIG company. The claims administration is handled by Mercury Claims, which is another affiliate. National Fire Insurance is the underwiriter of the insurance, and its relationship to Travel Guard in not known. The culprit here is Travel Guard.
