I had a late bill from SIngular and was contacted first by CCA for a settlement. They sent me a Settlement Offer Letter with a principal balance of $539.52 plus late fees of $97.12 for a total of $636.64. They then offered a settlement of $509.31. But, if I paid them 655.74, (a premium) they would COMPLETELY REMOVE the derog off my report. So, I OVERPAID this amount. of course, they never did remove this off my report like they agreed and when I called them back they acted like they never agreed to this. CCA are LIARS> now you won't believe what happened next.
4 months goes by.... then I get a letter from a collection company called Nationwide Recovery for the BALANCE of $81.00 that they claim is still owed on the account!!! WHAT? are they FREAKING CRAZY!!! Not only did I settle that, I OVERPAID it for a LIE!
I then called SINGULAR and they said they could not help me because CCA is the one who reports the settlement to them and that all it showed was a partial payment!!! I AM SO FREAKING PISSED THAT I AM WASTING MY TIME ON THIS!!!!
So, I ask CINGULAR who is now Big AT&T if they have a FAX number that I can send them the SETTLEMENT letter from CCA and they tell me that they do NOT HAVE ANY FAX NUMBER available for me to do this!!! Can you believe this!!!
So, I asked CINGULAR to call CCA (Their collection company) and they told me that they do not call them and that they would request a copy of the settlement in a few weeks or so!!!!! IN THE MEANTIME I have this a-hole from Nationwide threating me with derogs on my credit!!!
SO THE SCAM WORKS LIKE THIS - AT&T (Cingular) Sends a portion of your late bill to one Credit Collector who SCAMS you for a SETTLEMENT, then the collection is resent to another WHO THEN RESCAMS you and threatens you until you pay again!!! STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM CINGULAR/AT&T as you can!!!! TO BAD FOR iPHONE!! I will not touch one with those scamming providers and their credit collection scam artist companions!!

Never negotiate a settlement with a collection agency!

Always settle a debt with the debt OWNER, in writing, and have the creditor provide a document that clearly states that the debt is ABSOLVED as a result of the settlement. This is to protect you in the future should some other collection agency or debt buyer come after you.
If you kept a copy of the settlement offer, I would mail that to cingular and see what they do.
Cingular and ATT have fax numbers - just check their websites.
Good Luck.

Please tell me....

1. Something from Cingular stating your account balance BEFORE it went to collections.
2. The letter from the collection agency showing the amount they agreed to settle for.
3. Something showing proof that you actually made the payment such as a cancelled check, copy of a money order/cashiers check, or your bank statement.
If you have all of these things, then don't bother wasting your time calling Cingular or the collection agency. Forward the above mentioned items to the appropriate credit bureau's and have the information removed from your credit report.
