I engaged Nationwide to move me from CA to TX. I originally engaged another company who actually did a walkthrough of my house before giving me a move quote but when I talked to Nationwide they said they could beat the price. I provided Nationwide with the list of items I planned to move and the weights. I gave them all the information from the other moving company and based on the information they quoted me a better price. I signed their contract on a Thursday my move was scheduled for the following Monday. I was also charged an upfront deposit of $2300.00
When the actual moving company called me to confirm my move on Friday, I asked them when they were going to send someone out to crate my glass tables and very large mirror, They said crating was not in my quoted price; therefore, I would need to pay extra to crate the tables/mirror. When I gave Nationwide my information from the other moving company I told them my quote included the creating of my mirror and tables.
I couldn't get in touch with Nationwide until Saturday because of the difference in time zones. When I called Nationwide to tell them what the moving company said the Nationwide Rep told me that my items did not need to be created. The items could be wrapped with heavy moving paper and they would be fine. I told the Customer Service Rep. that I had specifically asked about the creating of my items and I was told they would be created. Nationwide Customer Service said they would call the moving company to see what they could work out but since it was the weekend they could not get in touch with the movers until Monday. They said I should go ahead with the move and we could work out the details on Monday. I was not comfortable with this arrangement; therefore, I told them I was cancelling the move. I immediately sent them an email confirming the cancel.
On Monday at 6:30 am Nationwide sent a moving truck to my house to move me but I refused the move. I had a flight scheduled to leave on Tuesday to go back to TX; therefore, when I encounter these problems I called the original moving company (Atlas) on Friday evening and asked if they could move me on Monday. They said yes. I paid Atlas more than Nationwide quoted just to get moved on Monday as planned. Atlas Moving did exactly what they committed to doing, at the price they committed and did not charge a deposit. My items were delivered on time in good shape and I paid for the entire more when the items arrived in TX, not before the move.
Even though Nationwide did not move me they refused to refund my $2300 deposit. They said I signed their contract and I did not give them the required 48 hours notice of intent to cancel; therefore, they were not going to refund my $2300.00 deposit. I sent the cancel letter on Saturday via email but since they were closed on the weekend they did not acknowledge the receipt of the letter until Monday morning when they opened and the day of my move. I told them I talked to customer service over the weekend but they said they were closed and I talked to the help desk not the right people; therefore, I did not give them 48 hours notice. I signed the contract on a Thursday and cancelled on a Saturday. The move was scheduled for Monday; therefore, 48 (business) hours notice would have required me to cancel the contract the same day I signed the contract.
My credit card company reversed the charges based on the chain of events and since Nationwide did not actually move me my bank agreed they could not charge me for move/services that did not take place. Nationwide threaten to sue me for the money, they turned the account over to collections, and turned it into the credit bureau as a bad debt.
I have a bad debt/collection at the credit bureau of $2300.00 for a move that never took place. I have also received lots of harassing calls from collection agencies trying to collect the debt. When I would dispute the charges with one collection agency, the collection agency would drop it but Nationwide would turn it over to another agency. I've disputed the charges with at least four collection agencies. The bad debt is still on my credit report and I would like it removed.
