My wife and I contracted with Nelson Homes in Virginia to provide us with a custom home from Nationwide Custom Homes . We signed the contract in October of 2012 stating exactly what we wanted. The owner and his salesperson continually told us (which they now deny because it is not written in the contract) that our house would be set on the foundation and barring weather delays would be ready to move in 30 to 45 days from the set date. The house was built in December of 2012 , delivered and set on January 22 2013. It is now April 15 2013 and the house is nowhere near completion due to substandard workmanship ofNelson Homes and NationWide Custom Homes. When questioned why our house is not finished and a house right down the road was set a month later is ready for move in, the owner got belligerent and threatened to pull all crews off my house . Which he did last week during warm dry weather. This is because I made him comply with the contract specs for a custom porch we had installed on the front of the house. The porch was not completed nut he demanded a draw on the construction loan from my bank I denied the draw until he finished it. I held back $500 out of the $15180 that he was due to force him to finish it in a quality workman like manner. He started screaming at me and swearing at me and at which point I told him I was trying to be a decent guy and give him most of his money. He accused me of blackmail so I told him I could leave without giving him any money until the porch was completed. He took the check for the $14680 while still screaming at me. I calmly told his salesperson that he should notify when the substandard items were rectified and I would give him a check for the $500 held back. So far the items have not been repaired. My house is nowhere near finished and I can't get a completion date from Nelson homes. All I get is it will be finished in a timely manner. If you deal with this company you will be forever sorry. Their workmanship is below the quality standards of Virginia building laws but they pass pass the builders inspection code.
If you do decide to buy from these people, make sure they hold the construction loan as it forces them to complete your house in "a timely" manner since they have to pay the interest on the loan. That's where we screwed up. We got our own construction loan through our bank.
Do NOT expect them to honor any verbal assertions and have an attorney scrutinize the contract or you will be very sorry.
Case in point. I told them while we putting the build sheet together from day one that I wanted a generator connection installed on the house. No problem they say. It will be done when the electrical is set up at the site. House gets here and electrical is started . I ask where is my generator connection. Owner says its not in the contract so it costs me another $650 on a change order that never should have been.
So get every little detail in writing as it will save you headaches if you decide to deal switch this company. By the way , they will not commit to any date as to finishing a house in writing. This saves them legal fees when they can't complete the house IN A TIMELY manner as they state. 30 to 45 days my behind. I'm working on 90 days now with no end in site while he plays King of The Hill with my house and land.
One other thing, he will tell you that you are not allowed to talk to any of his contractors. He believes himself to be all powerful so beware so I implore you. BOYCOTT THIS BUSINESS for your own sake.
