Don't purchase a DVD-ROM player from LiteOn expecting you're going to get a DVD player for your XP computer, because you won't.

It comes with a CD-ROM software disk from Nero, based in Germany. This does not include the software needed to play a DVD. For that you have to pay $20 online to get a plug-in. You get an email confirming that they've taken your $20, as well as a link where you can download the software.

Guess what? You're not downloading anything.

After trying for a few hours the next step is to contact 'customer service' for a refund. They've made it impossible to contact anything resembling actual 'customer service' except by posting messages to their site. Naturally, they automatically list any and all complaints as 'resolved', including those which haven't been resolved.

They refer you to their 'other' customer service at asknet.com. Guess what? They're useless, except that they do provide a number to Nero's "customer service" in California, which is 818-956-7551, where you will receive a message referring you to their Technical Support Number (at $1.29 per minute), over and over again.

After a few hours of that you'll give up. It's not known whether there's really anything there but an answering service that puts you on hold.

It's a great scam.

And so far they're getting away with it.

Nero is a Rip-off!!!

AUTHOR: Disgruntled1 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 06, 2009

I had a similar experience just this weekend with Nero. Bought a HP dvd burner which came with Nero 7.0 software. After installing the burner and software, got a message stating that Nero 7.0 is only a trial version and would expire in 30 days and that it was a good idea to download Nero 9.0 full version so that there would be no gap after the trial version ended. Decided to download the software since I would have to in 30 days anyways. Gave credit card information, name address, etc. etc. got to the download link, supposedly downloaded Nero 9.0. Got a conformation email saying thank you for purchase, here is your authorization codes to enter to get Nero 9.0 to work. Followed all the instructions, got to the screen where you type in Authorization code, and did it probably a dozen times, getting a message saying that " This is not the correct authorization code, please try again." Frustrated I decided to get my money back after finding out that you could contact Tech. support ( for $1.99/minute no less) and decided i was already in enough and wasn't paying $1.99 for tech support. Called customer service # on Monday, on hold for over a half hour, got frustrated and hung up, decided to send Nero and asknet.com Customer service an email and file a complaint. Got a reply back the following morning from asknet.com saying that my complaint had been forwarded to Nero Customer service and then the status was changed to "Solved". Still waiting for a reply from Nero customer service. Tried calling Nero again today, and after being on hold for an HOUR, decided I wasn't wasting any more cellphone minutes. Got online to find asknet.com's phone number in Google, and saw a link for a Ripoff Report about a similar experience from another consumer about Nero. Promptly called my bank and luckily my card hadn't been charged for the software yet, so the only thing I could do was cancel my credit card and have another one issued. Fraud report for me to fill out from my bank is in the mail. I'm also contacting HP and the manufacturer of the DVD burner to let them know they are distributing software from a fraudulent company.

DVD Decoder

I'm sorry about your situation, as I've used Nero in the past, and decided to stick with (((competitor's name redacted))). However, the best free solution for DVD playback is called (((competitor's name redacted))). You can do a search, and the download link should come up. It's free and open source, and a great support community.

sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome. CLICK here to see why Rip-off Report, as a matter of policy, deleted either a phone number, link or e-mail address from this Report. In this case we removed an alleged competitor's name
